Abstract

This study aims to describe the topic-comment structure in the discourse of the lyrics of the song Shounen to Mahou no Robotto. The method used in data collection is the free-to-talk method, while for the study of data, the method used is the distributional method. The data is taken from the discourse of the lyrics of the song Shounen to Mahou no Robotto. A distributional study method is used at the data analysis stage, which uses a determining tool for language elements. From the results of the research, most of the topics found in the form of subjects that were topicalized with the topic particle marker wa, but topics can also be stated by moving elements that are not subjected to the beginning of the sentence, even though the particle wa does not mark them. Topicalization can occur in single or compound sentences. In compound sentences, the same topic can be used in both clauses, or the two clauses can have different topics. This study found more topicalization data without wa particle markers than previous studies, indicating the characteristics of song lyrics data that used language more flexibly than written data sources.

The purpose of this study is to explore the interactions between word orders and particles in Japanese transitive sentences in terms of information structure. To this end, a series of corpus analyses within the framework of the Givónian approach were conducted. Based on the present corpus analyses, I propose that scrambling is chosen when the scrambled object is anaphorically prominent but cataphorically non-prominent, and that topicalization is selected when the direct object is anaphorically and cataphorically prominent. Additionally, I arrive at the conclusion that word order permutations in Japanese are applied to intermediately accessible referents. In other words, word order changes are neither used with highly accessible referents, nor completely new information.

This article develops a view of -wa and -ga based on modern theories of information structure. The characterizations of the interpretations of ga and wa are both disjunctive. They have appealed to the notions of "exhaustive listing" and of "topic." There are considerable and well-known problems with the analysis of ga as a focus marker. There is a fairly general consensus that ga should not be singled out as carrying any semantic or pragmatic information; its alternation with wa is only privileged with respect to the alternation between, say, o (the accusative marker) and wa in the sense that it appears that subjects are an unmarked choice of topic. A formal treatment of the relation between contrastive and noncontrastive wa is badly needed, both for a satisfactory description of Japanese and more generally for the light that it might shed on the concept of topic writ large.

At this time the heavenly deities, all with one command, said to the two deities IZANAGI-NO-MIKOTO and IZANAMI-NO-MIKOTO: "Complete and solidify this drifting land!" Giving them the Heavenly Jeweled Spear, they entrusted the mission to them. Thereupon, the two deities stood on the Heavenly Floating Bridge and, lowering the jeweled spear, stirred with it. They stirred the brine with a churning-churning sound; and when they lifted up [the spear] again, the brine dripping down from the tip of the spear piled up and became an island. This was the island ONOGORO [apparently near Osaka Bay].
