This is a free Windows program that can calculate both the reflection/transmission of optical waves through a multilayer coating and parameters for the excitation of surface optical waves propagating along the interface. The program calculates both the thicknesses of the double layers and the thickness of the final truncated layer at given refractive indices of the layers. The dispersion of the refractive indices can be given in the form of the Sellmeier/Drude formulas or in the form of a wavelength-n-k table. For mixed layers, the Maxwell Garnett theory can be used. The program is suitable for studying and visualizing the field distribution inside photonic crystals, dispersion, and other aspects of the designed structures that sustain optical surface modes. I hope that this program should promote scientific development and implementation of practical applications in the area of surface optical waves.

Design of 1D Photonic Crystals Sustaining Optical Surface Modes

Plasmon-Polariton Waves in Nanofilms on One-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Surfaces

A method is described for designing 1-D PC structures to fulfill the conditions required for the existence of the surface mode with a particular wavevector at a particular wavelength. It is shown that the propagation length of the long-range surface plasmon-polaritons can be maximized by wavelength tuning, which introduces a slight asymmetry in the system. Wave Propagation in Periodic Piezoelectric Elastic Waveguides

The prorogation of electro-magneto-elastic coupled shear-horizontal waves in one dimensional infinite periodic piezoelectric waveguides is considered within a full system of the Maxwell’s equations. Such setting of the problem allows to investigate the Bloch-Floquet waves in a wide range of frequencies. Stop band structures have been identified for Bloch-Floquet waves both at acoustic and optical frequencies. The results demonstrate the significant effect of piezoelectricity on the widths of band gaps at acoustic frequencies and confirm that it does not affect the band structure at optical frequencies. The results show that under electrically shorted transmission conditions Bloch-Floquet waves exist only at acoustic frequencies. For electrically open interfaces the dynamic setting provides solutions only for photonic crystals. In this case the piezoelectricity has no effect on band gaps.

Observation of fine interference structures at total internal reflection of focused light beams

We report the experimental observation of fine interference patterns in a reflection profile of a focused laser beam when it undergoes total internal reflection from a dielectric interface near its critical angle. In both cases these interference patterns do not appear at all if the incident beam may be reckoned as a plane wave, that is, when the waist of the focused beam is much larger than the Goos-Hänchen shift or the surface wave propagation length correspondingly. A modified formula for the Goos-Hänchen shift is presented, and it is shown that a maximum value of the shift may reach several tens of microns for wide beams.
