Eco-Friendly Pest Control Alternatives to Synthetic/Chemical Pesticides

Public health has always been a widely debated issue, especially when it comes to nutrition, which in the last decade tends to evolve towards the consumption of nutritionally high quality products often raised in protected environments with attractive labels where the chemical residues from the use of plant protection products in the agricultural production phase are not always inscribed. Thus, in recent years the population begins to consume increasing quantities of organic products, which most often use eco-friendly alternative solutions to chemical pesticides that pollute the soil, feed animals and the finished product. These alternatives not only promise to improve the quality of food, but also to reduce environmental problems related to greenhouse gas emissions or pollution. The present work is carried out along a comparison between the agriculture of the past and the one of the future and wants to determine ways and possibilities of replacing synthetic chemicals with eco-friendly alternatives.

This paper aims to determine the impact of conventional agriculture through a comparative study between the conventional defining elements of the intensive system and the ecofriendly alternatives in the extensive system, identifying in this way the possibilities to reduce pollution and to strengthen sustainable agriculture.

Many currently existing agricultural production techniques have been developed in total reliance on effective chemical pest control. Today, however, it is becoming clear that chemical pest control has a number of limitations, and its ever increasing costs may well make it a limiting factor in agricultural production. If no special precautions are taken, we will undoubtedly end up in many other crops with a situation similar to that of cotton. In view of the reduced availability of new pesticides, those currently available should be used in the optimal way. At the present time, the integrated pest control approach is the best means of accomplishing this. The introduction of such programs will require official support through legislation or technical assistance. In the future, various new developments in pest control are to be expected. Greater reliance will be placed on the use of computer science. Further effort will be needed in areas such as crop loss assessment, stored product pests, technical assistance to farmers and pesticide selectivity. Closer international collaboration on plant quarantine matters and pesticide registration are essential for the future of pest control.

[Show full abstract] Plant Protection Product Regulation is to ensure a high level of protection of both human and animal health and the environment and at the same time to improve the functioning of the internal market through the harmonisation of the rules on the placing on the market of plant protection products, while improving agricultural production. The data requirements for active substances and plant protection products are set out in Regulations (EC) 283/2013 and 284/2013, covering active substance(s), safeners or synergists. The scope of this work programme was to help the fellow to gain knowledge and experience in order to understand the evaluation process of the data submitted by the Applicants at each different section of an active substance and a plant protection product dossier in a regulatory and scientific basis.
