Are rural and semi-urban populations ready to change their transport habits for climate?

Authors:

Abstract

With this study we tried to fill a gap in the transport research literature by analyzing the travel mode choice behavior of rural and semi-urban populations, while taking a novel multidisciplinary methodological approach. Non-urban populations have been repeatedly neglected in the literature, and most modern-day transport technologies are conceptualized solely for urban areas. The increasing pressure on the mobility sector to change mobility behavior to save the environment, however, also demands behavioral change of these populations. On top of that we could observe that most travel mode choice studies methodologically either focused on traditional-economic variables or took a more psychological approach, while always neglecting the other. In this study we combined both approaches to better understand the interplay of the many factors that determine travel mode choices. We obtained results that confirmed the importance of standard economic variables such as price and travel time, but also the impact of many socio-cognitive factors. One important and contradictory result concerns the impact of environmental factors, which depicts the complexity of the environmental question and potential behavioral change.
