Practicing Architecture under the Bamboo Ceiling

Rockrise) was among the earliest immigrants from Japan to come to the United States to study architecture, and in the early twentieth century he established a successful practice, first in New York City and later in Asia. However, despite his training at Syracuse University in the conventional Beaux-Arts architectural vocabulary of the period, Tsumanuma ... [Show full abstract] found that the expectations of white patrons required that he design objects and spaces around Orientalist themes in the language of Japonisme. In Practicing Architecture under the Bamboo Ceiling: The Life and Work of Iwahiko Tsumanuma (Thomas S. Rockrise), 1878–1936, Gail Dubrow and collaborators Christina M. Rockrise, Alyssa Gregory, and Sarah Pawlicki make use of a previously unavailable archive of Tsumanuma's family papers to document the architect's life and career, presenting an in-depth case study of the multiple ways in which racism shaped the lives and experiences of Japanese immigrant architects in the United States in the early twentieth century. The methods used for this investigation, which included consulting family papers and collaborating with family descendants, provide a model for scholars seeking to better understand racism's formative role in shaping the history of the architectural profession.

Application of wood-structured building in the post-disaster reconstruction

In order to meet the requirements of post-disaster permanent reconstruction, this paper, based on lab tests and engineering example examination, presents the application technology of wood-structured building and its practical example for Sichuan post-quake reconstruction. According to experimental results, the heat insulation capability of the common architecture envelope structure (single-layer ... [Show full abstract] mixed wall structure of bamboo and soil) in Sichuan traditional wood-structured building is not satisfactory, with its heat transfer coefficient of 4.59 W/(m2·K). Using the innovative technology of increased airspace, the improved envelope structure of wood-structured building, with the lower construction cost and better heat transfer coefficient of 2.1-2.3 W/(m2·K), performs well in heat insulation and living comfortability. Moreover, due to the improvement of construction technology, the new wood-structured building is featured with better quake-proof performance, shorter construction cycle, and lower building costs, which is fit for practical use in the post-disaster reconstruction.

Fiber Texture and Mechanical Graded Structure of Bamboo

Among plants, bamboo has an unique structure which resembles that of a unidirectional, fiber-reinforced composite with many nodes along its length. [Show full abstract] macroscopically graded structure while the fiber distribution exhibits a microscopically graded architecture, which lead to smart properties of bamboo. The reinforcing fibers are oriented along the bamboo's culm (trunk), whereas in the nodes the fibers become entangled in a complicated manner to produce nodes with isotropic properties that provide additional reinforcement for the culm.
