Reviews the book, The White Hotel by D. M. Thomas (1981). This book contains the most technical and compelling account of a Freudian view of hysteria that has ever appeared in fiction. The book is artful but, then, too artful. Incidental details earlier in the narrative-a newspaper story of a cruel happening involving a young boy-acquire new significance later in the narrative when similar ... [Show full abstract] details reoccur in connection with other persons in other circumstances. The earlier details are recalled but now as devices of the author, as plants. There is too much of this, and we are caught between admiring the structure of the plot and feeling duped. Finally, the writing itself, though pure virtuosity in certain respects, is barren of the sort of wit and aphorism we expect in the pages of a truly great text. There is something in the prose unrelievedly constrained and always-to-the-point, like the exposed works of a clock. The book is an instant standard for such fiction.
