This chapter explores the roles that popular culture plays in shaping and understanding security-related processes. It explains the different ways in which popular culture is conceived by different IR scholars and consequently how it impacts politics, and security issues more specifically. The chapter then focuses on the role of pop culture in managing conflicts (how it shapes basic beliefs about conflicts and how it helps sustain enemy images), how pop culture is used in inter-state geo-political competition, as a source of soft power, and finally, what roles pop culture can play in supporting transitions to peace, and in normalizing various types of understandings of peace.

The Cool Japan strategy, integral to Japans post-war cultural diplomacy, has significantly reshaped its international image and enhanced soft power. This study examines the strategys evolution and its role in transforming Japans global perception from a militaristic past to a modern, innovative, and culturally rich nation, while also driving economic growth through cultural exports. By ... [Show full abstract] integrating anime, cuisine, fashion, and technology into its national brand, Japan has developed a diverse identity that resonates globally. Empirical data, including European surveys and industry statistics, highlight the strategys effectiveness: 93% of respondents acknowledge Japans cultural richness, while the anime industry recorded revenues of 33.5 trillion yen in 2023, boosting tourism and cross-cultural engagement. The analysis further examines Japans leadership in international frameworks such as the CPTPP and initiatives like Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT), highlighting its role as a mediator in addressing global challenges. However, critiques of cultural exoticization, particularly concerning the 2021 Tokyo Olympics cultural representations, expose tensions between globalization and cultural authenticity. The study concludes that while the Cool Japan strategy effectively harnesses cultural resources to enhance soft power, future success will depend on balancing promoting popular culture and integrating traditional heritage, fostering bidirectional cultural exchanges, and addressing domestic social issues within Japans global narrative.

Soft Power and Stress: The Health Impacts of Indonesian Soap Operas on Malaysian Millennials

[Show full abstract] soap operas is shredded and superstition and it is not in accordance with the culture in Malaysia. All of this raises concerns that the presence of Indonesian culture will affect the identity, religion, and language, of the local community. Aims: This study aims to investigate and looking at the extent of the impression of Indonesian popular culture in Malaysia and to see the perception of Malaysian society, which is predominantly Muslim, in accepting non-Islamic elements aired in one of Indonesia's popular cultural products and see to what extent this affects emotional health, mental health and identity formation. Methods: To achieve the objectives and in order to avoid subjective views, this study is conducted in a controlled manner, namely by collecting data that supports presumptions, assumptions, and theories and also collecting opposing facts so that conclusions are not based on wishes, but what is found empirically. The data collection techniques in a qualitative approach can be done through observation, unstructured interviews, conversations, oral history and text analysis by using the basic question, namely Open-Ended questions. This is type of question allows respondents to answer more deeply and unexpectedly because the answers given will be subjective, according to the views of those people. Answers from open-ended questions can make us discover unknown and more in-depth topics about a study. Conclusion: Indonesian soap operas, as a form of soft power, have the capacity to influence the cultural and psychological landscape of Malaysian millennials. The consumption of such media can lead to stress, emotional fatigue, and identity conflicts, particularly when the content challenges established cultural and religious norms. By understanding the complex interplay between cultural influence and mental health, future research can focus on developing media literacy strategies and providing psychological support to help viewers navigate the potential stressors of cross-cultural media consumption.

[Show full abstract] rediscovered abroad; the hit songs were disseminated through social media, which eventually led to a revival of this genre’s popularity in Japan. This study refers to this phenomenon as cultural re-importation and proposes some theoretical deliberations to capture it. It recognises that the complex process of re-importation is mediated by digital means of communication, such as social media platforms YouTube and TikTok. This study employs three theoretical perspectives on the cultural spillover mechanism, namely, Japan’s soft power, transnational cultural flows, and digital influence. To elucidate these processes empirically, we analysed data from in-depth interviews with 35 young people from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan. Secondary data were collected as well, including online news and media releases. Based on the interview findings, this study posits that cultural re-importation is a complex interplay of several factors.

The Influence of American Popular Culture on Chinese English Majors: A Structural Equation Modelling...

Over the past 40 years, China has become progressively more open and integrated into globalization, including foreign-made movies and TV shows. The influence of American popular culture extends to English majors, who are among the most likely to be shaped by Hollywood’s ‘soft power.’ This research examines how their attitudes and behaviors are influenced by these depictions of American culture ... [Show full abstract] and values, and how this shapes their future career paths. A questionnaire (N = 497) was given to English majors at seven universities and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Some of the research literature suggests that Hollywood films particularly promote American visible culture; however, this study finds that non-visible aspects of culture (values, beliefs, lifestyles) are by far the most significant predictor of English majors’ image of America, their behavior, and potentially their future teaching practice. In doing so, Hollywood plays an important role in influencing the perceptions of Chinese English majors, including possibly challenging their value system.
