Use of Mobile Application to Improve Student Performance among Primary School Students in Sri Lanka

Well-functioning communication is crucial in all work communities. A respectful and trusty partnership between parents and teachers in schools is essential not only for pupils but also for the well-being of the whole organization. Communication is at the heart of such a partnership. Although most parent-teacher communication nowadays takes place on digital platforms, not much is known about the specific role of digital communication (DC) in building parent–teacher partnerships. In an attempt to find out we asked 400 Finnish parents and 80 teachers about their experiences of communicating digitally and the kind of matters they discussed, and how they thought feedback on pupils should be expressed. The data was content-analyzed. Three categories related to DC content were identified: study-related matters, behavioral issues, and sensitive issues. Parental and teachers’ expectations of how pupil feedback should be expressed also fell into three categories: a good balance of encouraging and corrective feedback, more encouraging feedback, and a constant emphasis on the child’s weaknesses. These results have research and practical implications for teacher well-being.
School Management Information System: An Effective Tool for Augumenting the School Practices
Abstract
The technological advancements have influenced the society so as to take a leap towards success. Every technological reform is a small step towards advancement and progress of mankind. Developments in information technologies have also been impacting upon educational organizations. The introduction of technology in schools can thus result in a decreased use of paper and in bringing most of the school office work in an e-format.
Thus, the schools should employ management information systems to improve the efficiency of administrative services. A school management information system (SMIS) is a system or process that provides the information necessary to manage a school effectively. They provide an objective system for recording and aggregating information and supports the institution’s strategic goals and direction. The administrative processes and the official procedures of school can be simplified by the means of management information systems. School records, the information about all the students, teachers and other school employees can efficiently be maintained by means of school management information systems. On the similar lines, the time-table and attendance records of the pupils and teachers can be maintained by means of time-table and attendance management system respectively. Further, the management information systems can effectively maintain the data pertaining to examination, financial issues; facilities and assets management of the institutions. To sum up, school management information systems not only eases the office work but also ensures the efficient functioning of the schools. It makes possible, a more effective way of storage and distribution of information. Therefore, realization of the importance of management information systems in schools and its successful implementation is a necessity. There is a dire need to employ such systems to bring qualitative improvement in the prevalent educational practices.

The purposes of the research were: 1) to study the factors of Educational Management System in Small Primary School; 2) to investigate current situations problems and guidelines of developing educational management in small primary school, 3) to develop Educational Management System in Small Primary School and 4) to examine the results of usage Educational Management System in Small Primary School. The research was comprised of four phases: Phase1 studying the factors of educational system in small primary school; Phase 2 Investigating current situations problems and guidelines of developing Educational Management System in Small Primary School; Phase 3 Developing educational system in small primary school and Phase 4 Examining the results of usage educational system in small primary school. The instruments used for data collection in this study were a note- taking form, a questionnaire, an interview and an observation form. The statistics used for data analysis were mean, percentage, standard deviation and content analysis.The results of the research found that:1) The factors of educational system in small primary school comprised of 4 main aspects: (1) Input including with eight sub-factors; (2) Process including with two sub-factors; (3) Output including with two sub-factors; (4) Feedback including with one sub-factor.2) The results of studying current situations and problems revealed that:There are 10,877 small primaries.The problems revealed that administrators lacked of supervision and did not followed up development of student’s quality, teachers did not clear about student-centered learning, parents and community lacked of cooperation in development of student’s quality and students’ quality were lower than benchmark.The guidelines to develop found that both administrators and teachers needed to develop teachers in student-centered learning, curriculum in learning of teachers, media and technology, learning sources for learner’s learning and to ask for parents’ cooperation in development of student’s quality.3) Educational Management System consisted of 4 main aspects, 13 sub-factors including with 42 indicators4) Evaluating system factors by experts, the results revealed that there were the highest in every factor in 80%. The findings of evaluation system and manual of Educational Management System found that it was higher than 80%.5) The examining of usage Educational Management System revealed that pre- treatment of usage educational management system was in the ‘least’ level. However, post- treatment of usage educational management system was in the ‘most’ level.
Technology plays an important role in educational activities in Turkey. This is largely because of the Faith Project, which was recently introduced into the country. The Fatih Project is a project of Turkish government which seeks to integrate computer technology into the country’s public education system. Education Informatics Network is one of the sub-projects of the Faith Project which makes many free websites available for teachers’ use. Furthermore, Ministry of Turkish National Education has included primary schools in the project and as a result, the usage of education platforms at primary schools is available now. Considering all the mentioned points, the purpose of this study was to find out classroom teachers' opinions in employing the education platforms in teaching. The participants of this study consist of teachers working in the city of Mersin, Turkey. The data were gathered from 116 primary school teachers working in the first, second, third and fourth grades, by using a semi-structured interview with 7 open-ended questions. The data were analyzed based on a descriptive research design. Besides, a qualitative approach was employed based on the answers given in the interview. The data and their frequencies are presented in tables. As a result of the data obtained from the study, it has been concluded that class teachers think education platforms are useful, the usage frequency of education platforms varies relative to different factors, and education platforms are used in an attempt to provide effective and permanent learning. Moreover, it was also stated in the study that teachers are not competent in using these education platform and they lack the required background knowledge. Consequently, several suggestions have been made to eliminate the mentioned inadequacies.

One of the success factor to achieve education goals is the good communication between the student’s parents and the school. Most of Indonesian schools use written communication in form of communicator book, renewed yearly when the student move to the new grade. All of the important information contained in the conversation will be lost if the book is missing, torn, damaged or replaced by the new book. The response time of the conversation is very slow, parent should wait the answer from the school until the student goes home. A mobile application is designed to replace the communicator book electronically. The application is hybrid, enables the parent to communicate easily to the class teacher, counselors, health services and also the school managements. The design has been reviewed dan feedback given from the users.
This paper reports on the use and potentials of Learning Platform (LP) technologies for organising learning in English primary and secondary schools. It reports on the findings of qualitative research on the benefits of LPs based on data from case studies in 12 ‘early adopting’ English primary and secondary schools. The paper reports findings on the potential of LPs to enhance student access to a broad range of learning resources, to increase opportunities for independent and personalised learning, to support opportunities for collaborative learning and to improve student processes of reflecting on and assessing their learning. The paper concludes by drawing out some of the pedagogic implications from these findings and with a brief summary of the emerging conditions associated with the effective use of LPs to support and organise learning.
