A semântica do pretérito imperfeito do indicativo com o verbo querer em português: modalidade e evidencialidade
Abstract
Este artigo pretende analisar a semântica do Pretérito Imperfeito do Indicativo, com o verbo querer, do ponto de vista da modalidade e da evidencialidade. Trata-se, mais concretamente, de casos em que essa forma verbal deixa de expressar o seu valor básico, temporal, para sinalizar um valor secundário, de cariz modal, sendo essas ocorrências de Imperfeito com leitura modal normalmente identificadas pela literatura linguística como um mesmo caso de “Imperfeito de Cortesia”. Buscar-se-á demonstrar que, a depender da evidência na base de uma enunciação com o verbo querer flexionado no Pretérito Imperfeito do Indicativo, haverá um ou outro posicionamento avaliativo do enunciador, sugerindo a existência de valores modais distintos, assinalados através da forma verbal em questão.

The relationship between language and conceptualization remains one of the major puzzles in language research. This monograph addresses this issue by means of an in depth corpus based and experimental investigation of the major types of expressions of epistemic modality in Dutch, German and English. By adopting a systematic functional orientation, the book explains a whole range of peculiarities of epistemic expression forms (synchronically and diachronically), and it offers a clear perspective on which cognitive systems are needed to get from the concept of epistemic modality to its linguistic expression. On that basis the author postulates a sophisticated, layered view of human conceptualization. This book is of interest both to scholars working on modality and related semantic dimensions, and to the interdisciplinary field of researchers concerned with the cognitive systems involved in language use.
This book is intended to contribute to the clarification of the linguistic research area covered by the terms modal, evidential and epistemic. It sets out to demonstrate that on cross-linguistic grounds a hitherto overlooked epistemic meaning domain must be given due recognition in linguistic theory, on a par with domains such as time and number. The relevant domain is coherent, but at the same time complex in that it consists of two subdomains: one which comprises degree-of-certainty meanings, and one which comprises information-source meanings. The book offers three arguments for giving recognition to such a meaning domain. The first argument concerns the clustering of linguistic expressions with epistemic meaning into morphosyntactically delimited systems of elements. The second argument has to do with the variation pertaining to the coding of epistemic meanings, as highlighted in a semantic map of epistemic expressions. The third argument turns upon the scope properties of epistemic meanings and the morphosyntactic reflections of these properties. Finally, the book proposes a unified cognitive analysis of epistemic meaning in terms of which it attempts to account for the properties of the epistemic meaning domain as well as of individual epistemic meanings.
The paper discusses the cross-linguistic classification of evidential values (including the so-called admirative value) and proposes a typology of evidential systems based on the distinction between ‘direct’, ‘reflected’, and ‘mediated’ evidence.
