[Show full abstract] undergraduate disaster medicine education in Swedish medical schools, the teaching methodologies employed, plans for future curriculum integration, and the extent of variation across universities. Methods We conducted a comprehensive review of syllabi from all Swedish medical programs to identify the inclusion of disaster medicine. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 representatives from all seven Swedish medical schools, including those responsible for disaster medicine education or members of the education boards. The interviews explored teaching methods, curriculum content, and plans for the new six-year program. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results Disaster medicine is included in the curriculum of all Swedish medical programs; however, its content, extent, and teaching approaches vary. Lectures are the most common teaching method, with some schools incorporating case discussions, tabletop exercises, and disaster simulations. Most medical faculties plan to maintain or expand their disaster medicine curriculum. However, there is no formal collaboration between universities in developing or standardizing disaster medicine education for the new curriculum. Conclusion The current level of disaster medicine education in Swedish medical schools requires enhancement in both quality and scope. Variations between universities would need to be minimized to ensure a more consistent approach. Preliminary plans for the new six-year medical program suggest that disparities between universities may persist, underscoring the need for a coordinated effort in standardizing disaster medicine education at the undergraduate level.

Resilience enhancement interventions for disaster rescue workers: a systematic review

Resilience is defined as the ability of individuals to adapt to stress and adversity. In recent years, the concept of resilience in the context of disaster, particularly that of disaster rescue workers, has received considerable attention from academic researchers, disaster response organizations, and policymakers involved in disaster management. This systematic review aimed to identify ... [Show full abstract] interventions designed to enhance the resilience of disaster rescue workers. A systematic search was conducted from inception to January 31, 2024, in ten electronic databases: ISI Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PILOTS, PsycInfo, and the CNKI. A manual search of the reference lists of the included articles and an author search were conducted to identify additional relevant literature. A total of 22 studies that aimed to enhance resilience among disaster rescue workers were included in this review. These interventions focused on resilience-related knowledge and skills, stress and energy management, coping strategies, mindfulness, and psychological first aid. The duration of these interventions ranged from 1 to 24 h within 8 weeks, with sessions conducted in-person or online in group formats. Individual resilience, coping, social support, mindfulness, and burnout improvements were reported. The most common types of interventions were psychoeducation, followed by mindfulness-based training. However, the methodological quality of these interventions was generally sub-optimal. A well-designed intervention study is needed to enhance the resilience of disaster rescue workers.

Keeping in Place After the Storm-Emergency Assistance and Evictions

We offer evidence that federal emergency assistance (FEMA) in the days following natural disasters mitigate evictions in comparison to similar emergency scenarios where FEMA aid is not provided. We find a 16% increase in overall evictions after hurricane natural disaster events that can be decomposed to a 36% increase for those that do not receive FEMA rental assitance and only a 11% for ... [Show full abstract] hurricane events that do receive FEMA aid. Furthermore, we also show that FEMA aid acts as a liquidity buffer to other forms of emergency credit, specifically we find that both transactions volumes remain stable and result in a decrease in defaults by 19% in payday loans during hurricane events in locations that do receive FEMA aid. This effect largely reverses in areas that do not receive FEMA aid, where transaction volumes drop by 12\% and default rates remain similar relative to the baseline. Overall, this suggests that the availability of emergency liquidity during natural disaster events is indeed a binding constraint with real household financial consequences, in particular through our documented channel of evictions and in usage of high-cost credit.

Determination of disaster literacy status of nursing students and related factors

Data were evaluated using univariate analysis for scale total score and multivariate analysis for scale subdimensions. Results It was found that the disaster literacy status of 56.8% of nursing students was inadequate/limited. It was found that among the subdimensions of the Disaster Literacy Scale, the mean score of response subdimension was highest and the mean score of recovery subdimension was lowest. Disaster literacy status was affected by nursing student’s grade, their mother’s education, following disaster news, experiencing loss of life in disasters and participating in disaster drills. We found that following disaster news affected mitigation subdimension score; grade, following disaster news, experiencing injuries, and experiencing loss of life in disasters affected preparedness subdimension score; being an AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) volunteer, experiencing loss of life in disasters, and participating in disaster drills affected the response subdimension score; grade, mother’s education level, being an AFAD volunteer, experiencing loss of life in disasters, disaster planning with family, and participating in disaster drills affected recovery subdimension score. Conclusion To increase the disaster literacy status of nursing students, it is recommended to create a good disaster literate nurse force by taking into account factors that affect disaster literacy status.
