Aim: To establish the diagnostic accuracy of doubling time (DT) assessment in evaluation of solid lung nodules (LN). Results: Seventy oneSeventy-one LN in 60 patients (median 68 y, 45-92 y,59% men) were studied, 63 of them malignant (corresponding a primaries primary lung neoplasms), and 8 were benign. There were not no significant differences in ROC curves among DT calculated by 2D or 3D methodology. Sensitivity, specificity and negative predictive value were 63,5%, 62,5% and 17,9% for DT between 40-400 days; and 80,9%, 37,5% and 20,0% for DT between 20-600 days. Conclusion: DT assessment has limited utility for rule outruling out malignant nature of a solid LN.

Early and Accurate Model of Malignant Lung Nodule Detection System with Less False Positives

The objective of this work is to identify the malignant lung nodules accurately and early with less false positives. ‘Nodule’ is the 3mm to 30mm diameter size tissue clusters present inside the lung parenchyma region. [Show full abstract] possible nodule candidates. Efficient shape and texture features (2D and 3D) were computed to eliminate the false nodule candidates. The change in centroid position of nodule candidates from consecutive slices was used as a measure to remove the vessels. The two-stage classifier is used in this work to classify the malignant and benign nodules. First stage rule-based classifier producing 100 % sensitivity, but with high false positive of 12.5 per patient scan. The BPN based ANN classifier is used as the second-stage classifier which reduces a false positive to 2.26 per patient scan with a reasonable sensitivity of 88.8%. The Rate of Nodule Growth (RNG) was computed in our work to measure the nodules growth between the two scans of the same patient taken at different time interval. Finally, the nodule growth predictive measure was modeled through the features such as compactness (CO), mass deficit (MD), mass excess (ME) and isotropic factor(IF). The developed model results show that the nodules which have low CO, low IF, high MD and high ME values might have the potential to grow in future.

Three-Dimensional (3D) Reconstruction for Detecting Shape and Volume of Lung Cancer Nodules

The development of CT scanning technology as a digital image recorder has provided facilities for oncologists in analyzing the presence of cancer in patient's organs. Visually, oncologists analyze it by looking at the CT slices to ascertain whether any cancer nodules in the lung are present. Another way is the shape of cancer nodules. However, since the CT scan images are in the form of two-dimensional (2D), it is hard for oncologists to see the full three-dimensional (3D) shape of the cancer nodules. Based on that matter, this study aimed to develop algorithm that can automatically detect and calculate volume of nodules for all slices in 3D reconstruction. 3D reconstruction of cancer nodules is performed through linear interpolation approach. The results of the developed algorithm, tested through a number of slice images from lung CT scan, showed that the approach and algorithm are able to reconstruct nodule shape in 3D and calculate volume automatically. The results obtained are expected to be able to help oncologists provide accurate information of cancer nodules as well as volume and shape of the cancer nodules in 3D surface.
