Abstract

Overview •Background: Little is known about how maternal postpartum diet shapes infant metabolic outcomes. •Objectives: To explore the relationships between maternal diet and infant body size in Samoan mother-infant dyads. Hypothesis: Postpartum maternal diet is a significant modulator of infant body size at 2-4 months. Methods Data collection • N=98 exclusively breastfeeding mother-infant dyads at 2-4 months recruited from urban, peri-urban and rural census regions (Figure 1). • Questionnaires: demographics, 24-hour diet recalls • Anthropometrics Statistical methods • Calculated mean daily nutrient intake from 24-hour recalls, log-transformed values, and adjusted for daily energy intake using residual method. 2 • Calculated infant weight-for-length (WLZ), length-forage (LAZ), and weight-forage (WAZ) z-scores using WHO standards. 3
