Abstract and Figures

Research on financial literacy in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has raised a significant amount of interest in recent years and has evolved both rapidly and unevenly. This paper is the first to provide a reliable, consistent, and up-to-date review of financial literacy in SMEs through the combination of a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review. Specifically, and after identifying the most influential agents involved in this field of research, we carried out a co-occurrence analysis of the authors’ keywords, co-citation analysis of the cited references and a subsequent in-depth analysis of a total of 88 documents published between 2005 and 2020. The findings indicate that SME financial literacy research has been primarily analysed regarding the following topics: (1) performance, (2) access to finance, (3) innovation, (4) risk attitude and entrepreneurship, (5) owners-managers, and residual contributions. The theoretical foundations that support this research structure have been (1) the resource-based view, (2) pecking order theory, agency theory and trade-off theory, (3) the entrepreneurial orientation perspective, human capital theory and upper echelon theory, and (4) planned behaviour theory. Subsequently, we developed an integrative framework on which to base proposals of important avenues for future research. Thus, this review offers a thorough and comprehensive overview of this emerging research field.

... In this regard, recent research has highlighted a critical need for Saudi entrepreneurs to explore personality traits (e.g., financial literacy and entrepreneurial competency), as these are directly associated with business success [1]. Unfortunately, research on financial literacy is still at an early phase and hence remains uneven and inadequate [9]. According to research [10], how financial literacy affects enterprise sustainability remains insufficient. ...

This paper investigated the influence of entrepreneurial competency and financial literacy on sustainable small enterprise performance. We simultaneously investigated the mediating role of entrepreneurial resilience on the association between competence and financial literacy with sustainable business performance. We used a quantitative method for collecting data from 220 small business entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia using an online questionnaire. The collected data were analysed with the help of PLS-SEM. The results reveal that financial literacy significantly positively affects entrepreneurial competency and resilience. Entrepreneurial competency has a significant positive effect on Saudi SMEs' entrepreneurial resilience and sustainable performance. Finally, entrepreneurial resilience was simultaneously found to have a considerable impact on sustainable performance while mediating the effect of financial literacy and competency on sustainable performance across Saudi SMEs. In line with Saudi Vision 2030, with its profound focus on entrepreneurship and developing a financially independent entrepreneurial community, this research contributes to creating economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs managing small enterprises. Apart from extending the body of knowledge, this research can support policymakers in formulating relevant strategies to encourage SMEs that have been worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic to perform sustainably. Several other implications for financial institutions and entrepreneurs have also been drawn.
... Moreover, recent studies in the same nature have focused on particular contexts or areas. For instance, Molina-García et al. [18] have shed light on financial literacy in SMEs; Bartolacci et al. [19] have discussed sustainability in SMEs; and Ragazou et al. [20] have studied digital transformation in the field of SMEs. In particular, there is no study in small business literature that describes the current streams of research, missing gaps and future research directions based on the relationships among financial resources, IT and networking and SMEs' internationalization. Hence, our research fills this important gap by examining the most productive countries, journals and authors in the field. ...

Over the last several decades, the internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has become an interesting research topic in business and entrepreneurship literature. The massive literature in the field has increased demand for systematic reviews, bibliometric studies and meta-analyses. However, up to date, there has been no systematic literature review, particularly on the role of finance, information technology (IT) and network ties in SMEs’ internationalization. Our research fills the gap and reveals the idiosyncrasies in the literature by conducting a systematic literature review to understand evaluation, scholarly debate, past and current research streams and white spaces for future researchers. We employed 262 documents (1997–2022) and utilized performance analysis and co-occurrence analysis for each area separately and then combined them. The database indicates that research in the particular areas started in 1997, but scholarly interest has been noted since 2006 and onward. We further identified the most influential documents, countries and journals in the fields of finance, IT and network ties and SMEs’ internationalization. Moreover, we conducted a co-occurrence analysis and identified past and current research streams in the fields. Finally, we created an integrated framework to identify white spaces and future research directions. Our insights show that SMEs should use finance, IT and network ties as complementary, rather than exclusive, to boost their internationalization process.
... CEO risk-taking propensity has been demonstrated to be a driver of technological innovation (García-Granero et al., 2015;Kraiczy et al., 2014). However, no research has measured the mediating effect of MCS and the risk-taking attitude of CEO on the relationship between FL and SME technological innovation (Molina-García et al., 2022). In this vein, the current study responds to the following research questions: Does MCS have a mediating effect on the relationship between CFL and the technological innovation of SMEs? ...

Previous literature showed mixed results about the impact of CEOs’ financial literacy (CFL) on small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) innovation. This relationship can be motivated by relevant variables, which are missing in the previous literature and make a difference as mediators. In this sense, based on the theoretical framework related to upper echelon theory and resource-based view, this study focuses on the mediating effect of risk-taking attitude and management control systems (MCS) variables. Empirical data from 310 SMEs gathered using a qualitative research questionnaire are analyzed using structural equation modeling methodology. Specifically, estimations are carried out considering the partial least square method. Findings show that MCS and managers’ risk attitudes fully mediate the relationship between financial literacy (FL) and innovation. Between these two mediating variables, the implementation of MCS stands out because it also enables the mediating effect of CEOs’ risk-taking in the CFL–technological innovation relationship. As the results do not support the significant direct relationship between FL and risk attitude, they confirm an indirect effect through MCS. Furthermore, based on the study findings, SMEs’ directors and owners, business associations, and public authorities can improve SMEs’ technological innovation by implementing training programs and policies to foster CFL. They can also acknowledge the interdependency between organizational factors and individual characteristics to enhance SMEs’ technological innovation.

The energy conservation of existing buildings plays a significant role in reducing global carbon emissions and building energy consumption. The research on building energy conservation focuses on discussing existing and new buildings. However, the research on energy conservation of existing buildings is relatively single, and there is a lack of systematic and in-depth review. Based on the bibliometric and qualitative analysis methods, this study selects the relevant literature from 2008 to 2022 for network mapping analysis and summarizes the research results. The seven indicators of impact factor, total publications, average publication year, total/average citations, and total/average normative citations were selected to analyze the selected articles by country, institution, journal, keywords, and highly cited literature. Three major research themes of existing building energy efficiency are obtained by analyzing the quantitative results of keywords and highly cited literature: (1) influencing factors and energy-saving obstacles of energy consumption, (2) energy-saving measures, and (3) energy-saving optimization and its evaluation method. Finally, based on the bibliometric results, this research qualitatively analyzes the highly cited literature and the latest research results to obtain the future development trends and possible directions of energy conservation in the existing buildings throughout their life cycle. This study provides innovative ideas for the energy-saving renovation of existing buildings: (1) Technology empowerment (using renewable energy, negative carbon technology, “artificial intelligence + Internet of Things + 5G” and cogeneration, etc.) and (2) Formulating regulations and policy incentives for different decision-makers (implementing demand response strategies such as time-of-use pricing to guide and restrict user behavior, considering carbon tax and carbon trading, etc.). on the premise of utilizing renewable energy and increasing the capacity resilience of the distribution grids, the existing buildings will be energy-efficient, economical, intelligent and comfortable in the future.

The growth of literature in a discipline indicates advancement of knowledge and a richer understanding of associated phenomena, factors, and context. However, an unplanned growth in literature can impede the advancement of a discipline by introducing the possibility of complex, competing, and occasionally counterintuitive arguments in the ongoing scholarly dialogue. The exponential growth of literature in small business and entrepreneurship research in the recent years has further exacerbated such a risk. Thus, there is an urgent need for a clear understanding of advancements and state of knowledge stock in the discipline in order to inform and guide future researchers advancing the field. The Journal of Small Business Management’s first special issue on review articles intends to contribute to the advancement of small business and entrepreneurship literature by informing researchers on the current state of research.

Research on family firm innovation (FFI) has grown exponentially in recent years, as evidenced by the growing number of authors devoted to its study. However, to date, numerous questions remain unsolved about how family firms are coping with different innovation issues. In this context, this study aims to explore the scientific literature on FFI through performance indicators of scientific production, social networks of collaborations between authors and the intellectual and conceptual structures of the field. To accomplish this goal, bibliometric techniques are conducted, namely co-author, co-citation and co-word analyses. This study is carried out through a review of 975 published documents on FFI retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases during the period 1987–2019. The findings reveal the richness of the FFI field and allows this large body of work to be organized into four theoretical roots and five thematic clusters. Additionally, this study proposes an integrative framework aimed at advancing new knowledge on the available research paths on FFI and identifying new research avenues to further develop the field. Hence, our research enriches the lively debate on FFI by offering a better understanding of the heterogeneous innovation behaviour of family firms.

This article reviews how context has been considered in studies on SME internationalization. It examines 333 articles published during the period 2010–2020 in leading international business, entrepreneurship, strategy and international marketing journals. It identifies their key findings, discusses the theoretical perspectives informing this literature, analyzes conceptual and methodological challenges, and suggests paths for theory development and future research. The review also provides a platform from which to address some of the limitations in international business [IB] theories when applied to SMEs, including organizational size as a boundary condition.
Shopping malls are unique retail environments offering individual consumption experiences within a holistic retail ecosystem. Drawing on a bibliometric analysis and a systematic review of 31 articles, this research synthetizes Jean-Charles Chebat's contributions to the shopping mall literature. Findings highlight four core clusters of the shopping mall literature, namely spatial wayfinding, atmospherics, consumer differences across shopping mall experiences, and shopping mall consequences. The newly developed Shopping Mall Experience Framework extends Chebat's research proposing additional elements of interest for current mall retailing research. Managerial implications offer practical guidance on successfully designing and maneuvering shopping malls of the future.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are two related technologies that are emergent in financial scholarship. However, no review, to date, has offered a holistic retrospection of this research. To address this gap, we provide an overview of AI and ML research in finance. Using both co-citation and bibliometric-coupling analyses, we infer the knowledge and thematic structure of AI and ML research in finance for 1986-April 2021. By uncovering nine (co-citation) and eight (bibliometric coupling) specific clusters of finance that apply AI and ML, we further identify three overarching groups of finance scholarship that are roughly equivalent for both forms of analysis: 1) portfolio construction, valuation, and investor behavior; 2) financial fraud and distress; and 3) sentiment inference, forecasting, and planning. Additionally, using co-occurrence and confluence analyses, we highlight trends and research directions regarding AI and ML in finance research. Our survey also indicates that, while studies applying AI and ML to finance have mainly appeared in operations research journals, rather than finance journals, an exception is Quantitative Finance, which has served as a unique an outlet for AI and ML research among finance-classified journals. Our results provide guidance for future researchers, as well as focus for assessing the growing emphasis on AI and ML in finance research.

Bibliometric analysis is a popular and rigorous method for exploring and analyzing large volumes of scientific data. It enables us to unpack the evolutionary nuances of a specific field, while shedding light on the emerging areas in that field. Yet, its application in business research is relatively new, and in many instances, underdeveloped. Accordingly, we endeavor to present an overview of the bibliometric methodology, with a particular focus on its different techniques, while offering step-by-step guidelines that can be relied upon to rigorously perform bibliometric analysis with confidence. To this end, we also shed light on when and how bibliometric analysis should be used vis-à-vis other similar techniques such as meta-analysis and systematic literature reviews. As a whole, this paper should be a useful resource for gaining insights on the available techniques and procedures for carrying out studies using bibliometric analysis. In this editorial, we focus on family business in the Arab world to exemplify the benefits of better contextualizing family business research to further our understanding of heterogeneities among family businesses from diverse regions. To produce more useful knowledge, we propose that family business research has to shift from classical contextualizing to context theorizing by encouraging the use of a context-sensitive approach. To achieve this goal, the present article introduces the embeddedness framework of family business contexts to be used as a context-sensitive instrument to recognize how context shapes family firm behavior and performance. By using a context-sensitive approach, we present three articles that focus on family firms in the specific context of the Arab world. We conclude this editorial by proposing a research agenda for context-sensitive approaches to family business research and specifically discuss the facets of context in Arab family businesses.

Drawing on human capital and upper echelons theories, this study analyses how CEO's financial literacy influences a firm's technological innovation and investigates the mediating role of alleviating financial constraints of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the former relationship. We develop and test hypotheses applying a Structural Equation Model to a sample of 310 Spanish SMEs. The results show that CEO's financial literacy exerts both a direct and an indirect impact, through alleviating financial constraints, on a firm's technological innovation.
