Beliefs and ICT: What can we learn from experienced educators?

This article contributes to this special edition of Technology, Pedagogy and Education by looking at beliefs about knowing and learning held by 15 teacher educators with longstanding involvement in the Association for Information Technology in Teacher Education. Beliefs were challenging to identify but were ascribed to participants through examining accounts of practice on the basis of ‘what they ... [Show full abstract] held true’ about teaching and learning. The study uncovered a widely held core belief in knowing as constructivist and a more peripheral belief in learner-centred, or social constructivist, pedagogy. Identifying participants’ beliefs helped to understand the frameworks in which judgements about teaching and learning with ICT were made even if the impact of beliefs on every day practice could not be taken for granted. The study discusses the importance of beliefs as a stable point of reference in teaching and learning; tensions in categorising beliefs; and the particular role of beliefs in relation to engagement with ICT.

The effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can improve educational quality, especially develop the 21st century skills. Whether teachers use ICT in their teaching or not depends on their attitudes towards the use of ICT. The purposes of the study were to investigate the trends and patterns of Cambodian basic education teacher educators’ attitudes towards the use of ICT. ... [Show full abstract] The total sample of 135 teacher educators from both Phnom Penh Teacher Education College and Battambang Teacher Education College were purposively selected to participate in the survey. The findings indicated that teacher educators had a positive attitude towards the use of ICT. They had very high intention towards the use of ICT compared to their emotion and belief. There were significant differences across gender, computer experience, and ICT training while their age did not. To enhance teacher educators’ attitudes, the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) of Cambodia should consider the provision of sufficient ICT training so as to equip them with more computer experience before being able to use it in their teaching and learning process.

The aim of the present study is to appraise the awareness among teacher educators in Tiruchirappalli district in India. The sample of the present study consists of 42 teacher educators. Descriptive analysis were used to analyze the data. The results indicate that Indian teacher educators awareness towards ICT differs regarding gender and subject. When compared with M.Ed. and M.Phil. scholars, Ph.D. scholars surpassed the M.Ed. and M.Phil. scholars in terms of ICT awareness in different dimensions. Indeed in India teacher educators’ awareness on ICT integration needs to be strengthened.

Teachers are indispensable within the teaching – learning process. Hence, they constitute a major input in the accomplishment of educational goals and objectives in all nations. In Nigeria, teacher education has been bedeviled with a lot of challenges in the modern day technology of imparting knowledge in the teaching and learning process. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is ... [Show full abstract] relatively a very new development in Nigerian educational system. ICT plays a significant role in teacher education. Hence, the objective of this paper is to discuss the prospects of ICT in teacher education as well as its challenges in E-teaching profession in Nigeria. The findings via descriptive research revealed that many teachers in Nigeria are not using ICT facilities in teaching learning process due to some challenges which include high exorbitant price of ICT facilities, lack of infrastructures in the areas of electricity supply, lack of adequate trained manpower for the development, maintenance and operation of ICT facilities, lack of commitment on the part of government towards the development of ICT, inadequate funding of internet connectivity and lukewarm attitude of many teachers to be computer literate among others. This paper proffers some probable ways of improving ICT in teacher education in Nigeria. It concludes that the importance of ICT in teacher education to improve the quality of teaching and learning process in schools cannot be over-emphasized.

Conclusions and recommendations of the study have been proposed to implement deeper content-based modules for pedagogical ICT competency and skills in all-level pre-service teacher education as well as in-service training courses.

Similarly, in the school education system, the platforms that have been created like the National Repository of Open Educational Resources (NROER), e-Pathshala, Saransh, e-Basta, Shaala Siddhi, i-Share, e-Bhasha, Shaladarpan, etc. These tools are for teachers, students and parents. All these initiatives could be successful, if the teaching-learning community is acquainted with the skills required for these.
