Factors influencing the perception of safety in automated vehicles interiors

Authors:

Abstract

While driving automated, the driver becomes a passenger and the relief from the driving task allows the occupants to use and enjoy their travel time for secondary activities. The subjective driving experience, perception of safety and the resulting trust are essential for the acceptance of automation. Within this contribution we provide an overview of factors influencing the need for safety based on both a broad literature review and an online survey. A self-reflective questionnaire was created to determine the participants' personal willingness to take risks and their perception of safety in vehicles. The focus was on the factors "environmental factors" and "protective effect". The participants were largely able to answer the questions targeting subjective safety. In particular, questions regarding "environmental factors" could be answered precisely in the online format. The differentiability into various aspects of the "protective effect" was not conclusively possible in the online format.

Within the ongoing process of defining autonomous driving solutions, experience design may represent an important interface between humans and the autonomous vehicle. This paper presents an empirical study that uses different ways of unimodal communication in autonomous driving to communicate awareness and intent of autonomous vehicles. The goal is to provide recommendations for feedback solutions within holistic autonomous driving experiences. 22 test subjects took part in four autonomous, simulated virtual reality shuttle rides and were presented with different unimodal feedback in the form of light, sound, visualisation, text and vibration. The empirical study showed that, compared to a no-feedback baseline ride, light, and visualisation were able to create a positive user experience.

Studies on autonomous driving systems are being conducted to realize a safe and secure mobile society. According to these studies, the safety of the system and the driver’s feeling of safety often do not match. To enable automatic driving control according to the driver's comfort, previous researchers introduced a risk feeling index to quantify the driver’s feeling of safety. These studies, however, did not consider the effects of the drivers’ individual differences for the risk feeling index. We hypothesized that the risk perception was formed by the difference between the actual autonomous driving behavior and the driver's prediction for it. The driver's risk feeling is expected to vary depending on his/her prior prediction of autonomous driving behavior. We considered that this difference, which we term as the prediction error, explains an individual difference in the risk perception. The purpose of this study is to reveal the effect of the prediction error on the risk perception. We conducted an experiment to investigate the effect of these factors on the risk feeling in the overtaking scene using a driving simulator. We obtained two types of subjective evaluations to examine the effects of the prediction errors on risk perception. One is perceived risk based on the driver’s original prediction, and the other is perceived risk based on the predictions that we manipulated by conducting a learning session during the experiment. The results suggest that the risk is perceived based on both the experimentally manipulated prediction and the individual driving characteristic of anxiety while driving. These findings will enable the development of a secure automatic driving system that suits each driver by controlling the system appropriately based on the driving characteristic of the driver.

Driverless cars are seen as one of the key disruptors in the next technology revolution. However, the main barrier to adoption is the lack of public trust. The purpose of this study is to investigate the key factors influencing the adoption of driverless cars. Drawing on quantitative evidence, the study found that the ability of the driverless car to meet performance expectations and its reliability were important adoption determinants. Significant concerns included privacy (autonomy, location tracking and surveillance) and security (from hackers). The paper provides implications for firms developing the next generation of car features and early implementation sites.

The increasing number of interactions with automated systems has sparked the interest of researchers in trust in automation because it predicts not only whether but also how an operator interacts with an automation. In this work, a theoretical model of trust in automation is established and the development and evaluation of a corresponding questionnaire (Trust in Automation, TiA) are described. Building on the model of organizational trust by Mayer, Davis, and Schoorman (1995) and the theoretical account by Lee and See (2004), a model for trust in automation containing six underlying dimensions was established. Following a deductive approach, an initial set of 57 items was generated. In a first online study, these items were analyzed and based on the criteria item difficulty, standard deviation, item-total correlation, internal consistency, overlap with other items in content, and response quote, 40 items were eliminated and two scales were merged, leaving six scales (Reliability/Competence, Understandability/Predictability, Propensity to Trust, Intention of Developers, Familiarity, and Trust in Automation) containing a total of 19 items. The internal structure of the resulting questionnaire was analyzed in a subsequent second online study by means of an exploratory factor analysis. The results show sufficient preliminary evidence for the proposed factor structure and demonstrate that further pursuit of the model is reasonable but certain revisions may be necessary. The calculated omega coefficients indicated good to excellent reliability for all scales. The results also provide evidence for the questionnaire's criterion validity: Consistent with the expectations, an unreliable automated driving system received lower trust ratings as a reliably functioning system. In a subsequent empirical driving simulator study, trust ratings could predict reliance on an automated driving system and monitoring in form of gaze behavior. Possible steps for revisions are discussed and recommendations for the application of the questionnaire are given. It has become impossible to evade automation: Thanks to the technological progress made, many functions that were previously carried out by humans can now be fully or partially replaced by machines (Parasuraman, Sheridan, & Wickens, 2000). As a consequence, they are taking over more and more functions in work and leisure environments of all kinds in our day-today lives. The resulting increase in the number of interactions with automated systems has sparked the interest of human factors researchers to investigate trust in automation with the overall goal to ensure safe and

Mobility services are evolving globally. Driverless public transport can be a game-changer for urban mobility. However, empirical evidence from the point of user experiences is lacking. A customer's sense of safety and security has a significant influence on public transport acceptance. This case study focuses on driverless shuttle bus passengers' subjective experiences of (a) traffic safety, (b) in-vehicle security, and (c) emergency management compared to the conventional bus. Data were collected through interviews from informants that travelled by driverless shuttle busses in the City of Vantaa, Finland in summer 2015. A total of 19,021 passengers travelled by 3,962 km autonomous buses on a specific route. The sample of 197 informants was analysed by quantitative methods. Informants assessed perception of traffic safety to be better in the driverless shuttle bus than in a conventional bus with a driver. However, they were lacking personal in-vehicle security. 64 per cent of passengers answered that sense of in-vehicle security in the driverless shuttle bus was worse or much worse than in the conventional bus. There was a significant difference between women and men when they evaluated their subjective sense of security on board F(1, 195) ¼ 8.196, p < 0.001. Men assessed their experiences of traffic safety, in-vehicle security and emergency management to be overall better than those of women. In order to mainstream the use of driverless shuttle buses, for example as a part of a transport chain, traffic safety is not a problem. Instead, a passenger's sense of security on board should be increased. This is the case especially with female passengers.

Automated driving is expected to bring several benefits such as improved traffic safety, reduced congestions and emissions, social inclusion, enhanced accessibility and higher driving comfort. A central human–machine interaction issue addresses the question of how automated vehicles should drive to ensure comfort and a positive driving experience. The project KomfoPilot aimed at investigating, assessing and enhancing comfort during automated driving by two driving simulator studies and a test track study. Sensors such as wearable devices, eye tracking, face tracking and motion tracking allowed for the integration of driver state data with information about the vehicle and the surroundings. Various driving styles as well as display solutions were evaluated for reducing discomfort. In addition, privacy issues were continuously monitored for all aspects over the project lifetime. Section 2.1 gives an overview on the background and aims of the project, definitions of central concepts and an overall summary of key results. Methodological details on the experimental design, participants, assessment of discomfort, sensors and questionnaires of the three studies are presented in Sect. 2.2. A first research objective was to find factors that affect comfort on a rather general level, such as driving situations and driving style parameters (e.g. speed, longitudinal/lateral distance, driving style familiarity). These results are presented in Sects. 2.3 and 2.4. A second objective was the development of algorithmic approaches for real-time discomfort detection based on sensor data. Results on physiological discomfort indicators are presented in Sect. 2.5, whereas Sect. 2.6 gives an overview of the work on algorithms. Privacy and liability aspects are discussed in Sect. 2.7.
