Abstract

This conference explores the American Dream and assesses its fulfillment and its validity in contemporary America. We also examine the numerous works of literature, cinema and popular music that depict the achievement of the dream and the disillusionment of unfulfilling it. The conference aims at providing an opportunity for scholars and university professors to share their knowledge and expertise about the American Dream, its fulfillment and its depictions in literature, cinema and popular culture. The questions that are discussed in the conference include the following: - What is meant by the American Dream? - How do people all over the world perceive the American Dream? - What do we make of the thousands of Algerians who apply for the green card in order to achieve the dream? - What about minority groups in the USA and the people who live at the bottom of the economic ladder? - Has Martin Luther King’s dream of racial equality and harmony been fulfilled? - Are Americans still optimistic about the United States and its promises? - Is the dream still valid in the USA of the twenty-first century?

The American Dream has long been a dominant theme in U.S. culture, one with enduring significance, but these are difficult times for dreamers. The editors of and contributors to The American Dream in the 21st Century examine the American Dream historically, socially, and economically and consider its intersection with politics, religion, race, gender, and generation. The conclusions presented in this short, readable volume provide both optimism for the faith that most Americans have in the possibility of achieving the American Dream and a realistic assessment of the cracks in the dream. The last presidential election offered hope, but the experts here warn about the need for better programs and policies that could make the dream a reality for a larger number of Americans.
