Abstract

In many societies, diversity has been neglected. The importance of diversity in the society for knowledge generation has become increasingly apparent in recent years. In order to achieve diversity, we need to take into account people from various backgrounds and backgrounds, and to understand that every individual is unique. Differentiating people can be based on race or ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, sexual orientation, economic background, and disabilities. We must recognize that each of these differences results in different experiences for individuals, and that all of these experiences can be synthesized to generate knowledge that is both more inclusive and more comprehensive. Diverse initiatives can be used to promote diversity in educational institutions, such as affirmative action and diversity programs. As diversity enhances receptivity to learning from others' experiences, it is essential for creativity and innovation. Furthermore, diversity promotes productivity and performance as a team can draw on the experience of each individual to find solutions to problems. Individuals must be aware of different opportunities and possibilities in order to grow as individuals, and diversity allows this to happen. As diversity prepares individuals for a diverse world, it is also important to students' learning. Ultimately, diversity contributes significantly to the creation of new knowledge due to the fact that it helps people draw on their own experiences and the experiences of others in order to discover new approaches to problems.

Introduction
Diversity can be understood and exploited by recognizing that each individual is
unique and different from the others, and that these differences can be used to the benefit of
society. Race or ethnicity, gender, age, and sexual orientation are among the characteristics that
make people unique. Since we have not embraced diversity as a society, we have not reaped the
benefits of diversity. The result has been a renewed emphasis on enabling people from different
backgrounds to interact with one another and exchange ideas, thus benefiting society as a whole.
In many sectors of society, positive action would appear to be one way to embrace diversity.
Affirmative action provides minority groups with opportunities to have their voices heard in the
areas where they are traditionally underrepresented since it allows them to create opportunities
for themselves. Nowadays, most large multinational organizations have diversity programs that
provide opportunities for minorities of all races to participate. Society has been increasingly

accepting of the importance of diversity, particularly when it comes to the creation of
knowledge, over the past several years.
Diversity and innovative knowledge
As a society, we strive to cultivate the benefit of diversity by acknowledging the
uniqueness of individual differences as well as utilizing these differences for the benefit of
society as a whole. The reason behind this is that everyone tends to look at things differently
because of cultural and environmental differences. In order for new knowledge to be created,
the diversity of perspectives within and outside society are of critical importance, especially in
view of the fact that they allow people with different perspectives to learn from each other. In
order to illustrate how diversity contributes to creativity and innovation, let us consider the
concept of learning, which describes the act of sharing knowledge between people who have
strong knowledge and people who have less knowledge. In addition to having the opportunity
to interact with people with different perspectives and life experiences, as well as being able to
hear their stories, we are able to help each individual expand their thinking. In a diverse
workplace, people do things differently than that which they are used to in order to adapt to a
new situation. During interactions of this sort, one can learn the best of both worlds and be able
to come up with a new way of doing something that incorporates the best practices of both
perspectives in order to achieve the objectives of the interaction. Innovation is closely linked to
this kind of process. A person is inspired to find new ways to do things when they interact with
people with different perspectives from their own when experiencing different perspectives. In
this way, diversity plays a crucial role in promoting creativity and innovation in society. The
inclusion of people from different backgrounds has clearly proven benefits in terms of various
aspects of society. As a result of an aging workforce, many older people are finding it hard to
find employment as the workforce gets younger. As such, it has disadvantages for any
organization that lacks older employees. As a consequence of their age, older employees are
more experienced than younger employees and as a consequence they may have been through
a lot of things that younger employees have never had the opportunity to experience. There are
numerous reasons why there is a lack of diversity in the workplace, and one of the most
important reasons is the availability of such older workers, which is a direct loss to an
organization. The reason many companies have reinvented the wheel is simply due to the fact
that they did not have senior employees who would have provided direction as to how certain
issues should be handled. In many cases, organizations which suffer from a lack of diversity
discover that they suffer from the problems only after the event has already occurred and the
damage has already been done.
Efficiencies and Diversity
The productivity and effectiveness of diverse societies is also much greater. It has been
shown that every individual has his or her own skills and capabilities that make them unique.
When people from different backgrounds share their skills, they can work more efficiently and
effectively. As a result of their social, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, different employees will
experience things differently when working in an organization with a diverse background.
Whenever such a company faces a problem, its diverse workforce is able to come up with
insightsThe organization's diversity ensures that at least one staff member will have had similar
experience with the problem or has an intimate knowledge of it and can provide guidance. It is
also important to note that each person's past experiences will have an impact on their ability to
perform. The performance of an organization as a whole can be improved when employees with

expertise in their fields work together with colleagues who are experts in their respective fields.
It is imperative for a company in the advertising industry to have a team with different cultural
backgrounds and racial backgrounds that will have the ability to create content that will appeal
to a diverWhen a team lacks diversity, it can lead to offensive content that is offensive to certain
segments of society, and can damage the reputation of the organization. In the field of
information technology, studies have been conducted on the benefits of having a diverse
workforce. Companies employ a large number of young and capable employees for a variety of
reasons. It is also essential that the product or service developed by the team is designed in a
way that can meet the needs of the users. Developing an application can pose challenges to
people with disabilities, for example, as they may not be aware of these challenges. Therefore,
they may find it difficult to access their applications as a result of these challenges. During the
development of the application, the developers would have access to that knowledge, making it
more accessible to all. As a team member, a disabled person would be able to point out their
challenges if they were part of the development team. Having overlooked a significant portion
of the population would have resulted in a product that failed to live up to its expectations.
Diversity contributes to individual growth
Diversity is also essential for the development of one's personal qualities. Until
individuals are exposed to people with diverse backgrounds or experiences, they are unable to
comprehend what they are missing out on. There is no way a person can learn a language if he
does not know that it exists. Learning a language begins with realizing it exists, which can
trigger a person's curiosity and pique his or her interest. A measure of one's personal growth is
their ability to pursue the goal of learning the language since they have acquired a skill that they
did not have before. Individuals who are part of a diverse community learn many new things
they never knew existed, and as a result their curiosity grows. It has been shown that a person
from a poor economic background can learn many things by interacting with wealthy people
and vice versa. As a result, an affluent person will appreciate their possessions more because
they are privileged to have them. Even a person from a poor background can be inspired by
what they have learned and grow because of what they have learned. Diversity provides
opportunities for growth regardless of one's circumstances.
Diversity and equality in education are important
Diversity provides a wide range of advantages to an institution as a whole, which is
one reason why many institutions of higher learning encourage diversity through affirmative
action. Through these interactions, students can learn from each other as well as interact with
the faculty. A student who does not have the opportunity to interact with people from different
cultures, races, or economic backgrounds might have problems integrating into the community.
To ensure the growth of an individual as a learner, it is very significant in institutions of higher
education to promote diversity. In addition to learning about another culture, it also gives the
learner the opportunity to better understand other people's experiences. In these circumstances,
they become more empathetic when they realize that their experiences in life differ from those
of others. As a result, students become more open-minded by learning about the experiences of
others around them. It is important that in order for students to be aware of the fact that their
own culture is not the only culture in the world, they will need to experience different cultures
and situations. Through the experience of different cultures, students become more accepting
of new ideas. All these factors prepare students to live in a diverse society, and as a result, they
are prepared for life in the modern world. It is important that students are exposed to a variety

of cultures and experiences so that they attain a higher level of cultural sensitivity, which means
that they have a better understanding of what is acceptable and unacceptable in different
cultures. Students with such a learning environment grow up better prepared to live in a diverse
society where they will interact with people of different backgrounds and with a variety of
experiences.
Conclusion
In today's world, we live in a diverse and global society. Thanks to technology, we
have made it possible for people to interact with each other across cultures. In order for a society
to generate new knowledge, diversity is of paramount importance. Creating a product that is
innovative, inclusive, and socially acceptable can only be achieved by combining the
experiences of various individuals. Whenever possible, information from as many sources as
possible must be gathered in order to synergize knowledge originating from as many sources as
possible. Diversity fosters creativity, which in turn contributes to innovation, productivity, and
personal growth, and is therefore crucial in enabling the creation of new knowledge. For
example, consider the viewpoint of a software engineer who may be unaware of all of the needs
that may be addressed by a product based solely on their own perspectives. Despite this, having
a diverse team of software engineers will result in engineers being open-minded when designing
a product to ensure that it can be accessed and used by those with varying physical capabilities.
It is also important that a person obtain a diverse education during their educational years as
this will enable them to adapt to a world that is becoming increasingly diverse. Rather than
relying on the opinions of others, we judge others based on our own experience. According to
reports, many white people are unaware of the degree of police brutality that existed prior to
the 2020 protests for black lives. Consequently, it is essential that a diversity of perspectives
and experiences be present in order to create new knowledge, as it is only through learning from
the best practices of people from different backgrounds and experiences that we are able to
create knowledge that is inclusive.

Gender diversity in knowledge exchange networks can be a source of innovation in organizations as it provides new insights that improve the creative process. Diversity literature provides enough evidence of the importance of utilizing mixed-gender teams to gain innovative outcomes. However, in knowledge management literature, gender diversity has been scarcely addressed. Knowledge management literature happens to be dominant, and there is a need to study the impact of gender diversity in knowledge creation processes and networks. This theoretical paper links the diversity literature to knowledge management literature and provides new understandings by considering gender as an important factor in the knowledge creation process. This paper contributes to the literature by emphasizing on exploring knowledge exchange relationships through a feminist perspective. Feminist perspective is also missing in knowledge management literature; thus, by making gender an important consideration in the socialization phase of the knowledge creation process, this paper provides a diverse perspective in knowledge management literature. Furthermore, this paper presents a conceptual model of gender-diverse knowledge exchange networks that shows the inclusion of women in knowledge exchange networks enhances the effectiveness of teams. Women are being neglected when it comes to inclusion in knowledge creating networks because of in-group bias against men and the stereotypical perception of women’s lack of technical and innovative knowledge. This paper sheds light on the importance of women's inclusion in knowledge exchange networks by emphasizing the vitality of diversity in creating knowledge and innovation in collaborative networks and teams in organizations.

A significant quantity of stress and anxiety is caused, as a consequence, as a result of employees having to try to balance the demands of work and family in their lives, which results in a significant amount of job-related stress and anxiety. Work-related conflicts are a very common occurrence among employees as the result of job stress, making it one of the biggest problems in the world for employees as a result of job stress, due to the fact that there are so many types of conflicts. It is true that employees who are able to maintain a balance between their work and family lives have the ability to apply the positive behaviors they have learned from their personal lives to their work lives, but the authors of this paper found out by conducting a survey that there is still room for improvement in this area. As part of the literature review, a number of studies related to gender have been conducted over the past few years, the majority of which have focused on the impact of gender on the work-family balance in the workplace. The availability of several gender-related studies on this subject has been noted in the literature, and several of them are in progress. A lot needs to be determined in terms of whether or not men find it difficult to balance work and family responsibilities in the same way as women, or if they in fact are experiencing a bit of an advantage in this sense over their female counterparts.

In the coming years, there will be a transformation of learning systems around the globe, which will be aided by new technologies and information science. With the advent of artificial intelligence and mobile devices with cutting-edge capabilities, the learning process will undergo the most significant changes in over a century. The use of mobile learning methods is becoming increasingly popular as new technology advances. According to the authors' literature review, as the field of research advances, more and more researchers are investigating the effects of artificial intelligence on learning, teaching methods, and teacher evaluations. The paper also discusses the benefits of using artificial intelligence to facilitate independent learning. Rather than being seen as an adjunct to learning and teaching, Artificial Intelligence helps to enable a fundamental shift in thinking about what should be taught and how it should be taught. It is both an exciting opportunity and a serious responsibility for a company that are of big size. Toward meeting this challenge, this article examines several key precursors and determinants of learning and artificial intelligence. Recently, a number of terms have been introduced into the field of learning, including portal connectivity, artificial intelligence, big data, machine learning, mobile technologies, and intelligent learning patterns. Due to these changes, society and education have undergone unprecedented transformations. The authors of the study conclude that the use of artificial intelligence in learning is likely to follow the trend that shows a rapid increase after a period of relative stability. As artificial intelligence develops rapidly in the field of learning, the way knowledge is conveyed and the ability to learn new things will be greatly altered.

There is no doubt that the use of bioplastics in the industry has become more widespread in recent years, but the process of these bioplastics remains one of the biggest challenges that remain to be overcome, despite the fact that the use of these materials is becoming more widespread in industry. For plastic engineers and researchers, this paper provides a basic, practical and valuable understanding of the differences between bioplastics and biodegradable polymers. This paper also contains information on different ways that bioplastics can be processed in various ways, in a methodical manner, as well as different ways in which they can be processed in different ways. The name bioplastic implies that it is a plastic material made from renewable biomass sources such as vegetable oil, fat, corn starch, straw, wood chips, sawdust, and even recycled food waste can be used to produce bioplastics. Some bioplastics can be produced directly through the processing of natural biopolymers such as starch, cellulose, chitosan, and alginate, as well as proteins (such as soy protein, gluten, and gelatin). Several of these compounds are chemically synthesized from sugar derivatives (such as lactic acid) and lipids (oils and fats) derived from plants or animals or are biologically generated by fermentation. Compared to petroleum or natural gas-based plastics (also known as petrochemicals), common plastics are derived from fossil fuels.

The Asian continent is currently undergoing a phase of project and technology implementation as various investments are made in various engineering sectors to support the continent's rapid development. Management of a business through technology projects is similar to management of a business through the use of technology. To facilitate the rapid development of Asia, project and technology management is emerging as one of the most important disciplines for making sense of the large amounts of funding that are committed to numerous projects of this type. Engineering projects in Asia have not performed particularly well in the past. The majority of major public sector projects in Asia result in substantial cost and time overruns, draining national resources and delaying the benefits to the continent as a whole. Consequently, the project's benefits will be delayed. There have been reports that some engineering infrastructure projects have taken three times longer to complete than originally intended and approved, which has led the state, in conjunction with the nodal agencies responsible for overseeing public projects, to seriously consider ways to significantly improve the situation. It has become increasingly important to use technology in education and society in order to prepare students for the future world in which they will have to live, as it enhances education and develops digital literacy, as well as 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and information literacy that will be necessary for their success in the future. With technology being used more effectively in the education sector and in society as a whole, these skills can be imparted to learners in a more effective manner as a result of its use in the education sector. To accomplish this objective in educational institutions and society as a whole, pedagogical models can certainly be utilized, but in order to achieve this objective in a productive manner, they need to be utilized in the correct way. In addition to great leaders and entrepreneurs, the most successful educational organizations and societies share one common characteristic with the most successful educational organizations and societies. That is, they are able to exchange knowledge and wisdom within the society as well as within their faculties, students, and the external environment in which they operate. As a result of the variety of ways in which people communicate today, both individually and as a group, technology-enhanced communication in the society has never been more complex or challenging than it is today due to the types of communication technology available. Whenever it comes to using technology for knowledge dissemination in educational organizations, it is imperative that both the prerequisites as well as the consequences are taken into account when making a decision regarding the use of technology for knowledge dissemination. In recent years, it has been observed that the use of algorithms as a method of solving problems has increased due to machine learning and the development of algorithms that have been used to solve problems as a result of machine learning. The use of analytics is a prerequisite to using algorithms as a means of solving problems, because algorithms can be used as a means of solving problems, since algorithms are able to solve problems. For the purpose of solving problems in the current educational scenario around the world, a variety of algorithms, along with machine learning, are used as a method of solving problems, in addition to the development of algorithms to solve problems in the current educational scenario. Keywords: Technology and knowledge development in society, factors affecting knowledge sharing in education, diversity and inclusion of knowledge and technology, technology and society Introduction. Having a deep understanding of what technology is and what it does is essential for us to understand the importance of technology in education, the development of technology and knowledge in education, as well as their exchange, in order to be able to appreciate them as they are and as they serve. Emerging technologies are often used to describe a new type of technology development, but they can also be used to describe the continuous development of an existing type of technology if it is a type of technology that was developed in the past. A number of characteristics distinguish emerging technologies from traditional technologies, as a general rule. There are a number of characteristics that distinguish emerging technologies from traditional technologies, including a radical novel approach in their application, if not even in their origination, rapid growth, coherence, a significant impact, uncertainty and ambiguity (Tiwari, S.P., 2022). Therefore, emerging technologies are now viewed as a topic that encompasses a wide range of disciplines in the fields of education, information technology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, machine learning, cognitive science, cultured meat, robotics, and artificial intelligence, just to name a few. A term that has been around for approximately four to five decades, Software as a Service (SaaS) is a concept that has been around for approximately four to five decades and is often referred to as software as a service. As advances in emerging technologies continue to transform the business landscape, knowledge sharing will become increasingly important to leveraging the unique core competencies of organizations so as to gain a competitive advantage. Despite emerging technologies being so popular in news and media publications, knowledge sharing remains an area of research that is under-researched in the emerging technologies context. This research aims to identify the barriers and factors to knowledge sharing within an emerging technology context. A comprehensive in-depth interview was conducted with 38 professionals working in 5 organizations engaged in the field of emerging technologies in order to arrive at the findings discussed in this paper. Based on the analysis of the surveys, we found that there are six main factors driving the need for sharing knowledge. The six factors are: regular cadence, integrating expertise from different teams, diversity-inclusive social environment, Interconnected platforms that are accessible to all, a regular update schedule that needs to be followed, to create points of contact within different departments of an organization in order to facilitate sharing. It is important to note that the distribution and use of knowledge in organizations is dependent on the interactions between individuals. Overarching impact of 4 IR is expected on the physical, digital and biological world. Several Asian countries have maintained high growth and have displayed true globalization by possessing elements and desiderata of the 4 IR. Asia has also displayed its innovative strength in many determinants of 4 IR. Although a gradual transition from labour to capital to talent is slated to happen, Asia will have its own amalgam of the three case-by-case. For example, some Asian countries have demographic assets to use labour in lowskill jobs and they will continue to compete as low-cost manufacturing hubs for a substantially long period despite high proportion of ageing people and less birth rate. Human talent-intensive services like healthcare and education stand to benefit from 4 IR by way of cost-reduction but concerted efforts of public and private sectors are needed in these areas. Unemployment and inequality may rise initially but may be offset to a sizeable extent by new jobs and engagements and also by reorientation of knowledge, skill and attitude, the three realms of education, through continuous training, skill upgradation and self-renewal. There could be eugenic effects such as defect-rectification at early developmental stages and ultimately moving towards designer human beings in the long long run. Significant role of the state, policy and mode of governance was observed in bringing about the 4 IR. It is hoped that while thriving on the fruits of 4 IR, all stakeholders would also unite for maintaining a vigil and holding up the human values like conscience, creativity and empathy to mar the possible ill-effects of the 4IR that could be dreaded in its most dehumanized form in the long run.

Soybean is the most globalized, traded and processed crop commodity. USA, Argentina and Brazil continue to be the top three producers and exporters of soybean and soymeal. Indian soy-industry has also made a mark in the national and global arena. While soymeal, soyoil, lecithin and other soy-derivatives stand to be driven up by commerce, the soyfoods for human health and nutrition need to be further promoted. The changing habitat of commerce in soy-derivatives necessitates a shift in strategy, technological tools and policy environment to make Indian soybean industry continue to thrive in the new industrial era. Terms of trade for soy-farming and soy-industry could be further improved. Present trends, volatilities, slowdowns, challenges faced and associated desiderata are accordingly spelt out in the present article.

A survey on status and trends of information and communication technologies (ICT) use for knowledge sharing in agriculture was attempted. Among asian countries, India comes under the second next category after the advanced user category comprising Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Both profit-motive and business augmentation on one hand and community services and rural welfare on the other have been the objectives of ICT-based models in agriculture in India. Major ICTs endeavours for agriculture and rural concerns include multifaceted projects and services of National Informatics Centre, 'Bhoomi' of Karnataka, Village Information Centres of Government of India, ITC's e-Choupal, TARAhaat, iKisan.com, i-Villages of Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) of Swaminathan Research Foundation, i-Community of Hewlett-Packard, Warana Wired Village Project, n-Logue, 'Gyandoot' of Government of Madhya Pradesh, Knowledge Network for Grass Root Innovations of the Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institution, Traditional Knowledge Digital Library and several others. The ICT endeavours for agriculture belong to a wide array of agencies, viz private sector, public sector, self-help groups and NGOs, and also include combined endeavours. e-Learning is being increasingly resorted to both in (i) in campus or 'presence' mode, and (ii) 'distance' mode. Its use is gradually easing-out the stakeholders from the stranglehold of the inter-deterrence of the 3 arms of the 'Iron Triangle', viz (i) quality, (ii) access, and (iii) cost. The social groups having less mobility are poised to benefit more from this mode of education. This could also be one of the potent tools to bring about gender mainstreaming. e-Learning is being integrated into the existing organizational and educational structure as a hybrid system that can be called 'ICT-supported learning'. Connectivity, content development, infrastructure development, faculty development, need assessment on a continuum, linking the nodes and formation of consortia etc. are the areas identified that need to be supported and developed.

A study on e-governance challenges and strategies for managing projects has been attempted. Software crisis even today is a widespread affliction. Manifested as over-spent budgets, missed deadlines, and unmet requirements, the software crisis costs is a major threat for the currently developing e-governance sphere. Mismanaging a software development project in case of e-governance can mean ineffectively delivering services to its citizens. Although throngs of texts, papers, and other narratives have been written during the past 40 years to address the subject (and challenges) of software construction and its related activities, there is still no comprehensive solution to the problem. This is because software engineering is a young, complex, and ever-changing discipline. For an individual IT organization with limited resources, solving the long-standing problem of software engineering is improbable. The authors have tried to present a number of strategies and best practices that will help the e-governance and IT industries look towards realistic goals and mitigate the risks inherent to software development projects.

Dispersed, cross-functional development teams—a particular type of virtual team—confront a wide range of knowledge-based challenges in their dispersed work. Encompassing diverse sources of task-relevant knowledge, such teams present rich opportunities for exchanging and combining knowledge—activities at the heart of an organization's ability to innovate (Grant 1996; Schumpeter 1934). Yet empirical studies from distinct research streams indicate that both knowledge diversity and geographic separation also challenge the effective exchange and ability to leverage knowledge. This study explored how such teams interact to overcome the barriers and reap the benefits of their "built-in" knowledge diversity. In particular, we sought to understand (1) how teams use various collaborative technologies at their disposal to share knowledge and (2) whether shared—or disparate—expectations around the use of those technologies influenced knowledge sharing practices. In-depth, multi-method field research of dispersed new product development teams in a multinational company forms the empirical basis of this work.

As a result of international competition and a globalized environment, companies today face the remarkable challenge of how to achieve and maintain their competitive advantage in a highly competitive environment in which international competitors play a significant role. The goal of digital governance has always been to make people's lives easier and improve customer satisfaction. In response to the recovery in markets, organizations around the world are now playing a different role. There is no doubt that companies are making considerable efforts to boost the factors which make them more competitive, including adoption of the principles of digital governance and automation. The role of digital governance is currently more of a facilitation than a regulation. Leaders and executives understand the importance of digital strategy and governance for competitive advantage. This paper examines the challenges and competitiveness that can be gained by digital governance on the world's business strategy using numerous real-world examples and anecdotes. This paper examines the challenges and competitiveness that can be gained by digital governance on the world's business strategy using numerous real- world examples and anecdotes. It is true that digitization has been around for some time, but there is still a long way to go to fully realize its potential. The aim of this paper is to explain how concrete elements of digital governance can affect the competitiveness of companies. Thus, digital governance was a key element in the successful recovery of the markets after the Covid era, despite the fact that it's been around for so long. In order for a company to be successful in international markets and maintain its quality, its productivity performance compared to its competitor’s digital governance plays a very important role.

Previous research suggests that knowledge diffusion occurs more quickly within Toyota’s production network than in competing automaker networks. In this paper we examine the ‘black box’ of knowledge sharing within Toyota’s network and demonstrate that Toyota’s ability to effectively create and manage network‐level knowledge‐sharing processes at least partially explains the relative productivity advantages enjoyed by Toyota and its suppliers. We provide evidence that suppliers do learn more quickly after participating in Toyota’s knowledge‐sharing network. Toyota’s network has solved three fundamental dilemmas with regard to knowledge sharing by devising methods to (1) motivate members to participate and openly share valuable knowledge (while preventing undesirable spillovers to competitors), (2) prevent free riders, and (3) reduce the costs associated with finding and accessing different types of valuable knowledge. Toyota has done this by creating a strong network identity with rules for participation and entry into the network. Most importantly, production knowledge is viewed as the property of the network. Toyota’s highly interconnected, strong tie network has established a variety of institutionalized routines that facilitate multidirectional knowledge flows among suppliers. Our study suggests that the notion of a dynamic learning capability that creates competitive advantage needs to be extended beyond firm boundaries. Indeed, if the network can create a strong identity and coordinating rules, then it will be superior to a firm as an organizational form at creating and recombining knowledge due to the diversity of knowledge that resides within a network. Effective work groups engage in external knowledge sharing--the exchange of information, know-how, and feedback with customers, organizational experts, and others outside of the group. This paper argues that the value of external knowledge sharing increases when work groups are more structurally diverse. A structurally diverse work group is one in which the members, by virtue of their different organizational affiliations, roles, or positions, can expose the group to unique sources of knowledge. It is hypothesized that if members of structurally diverse work groups engage in external knowledge sharing, their performance will improve because of this active exchange of knowledge through unique external sources. A field study of 182 work groups in a Fortune 500 telecommunications firm operationalizes structural diversity as member differences in geographic locations, functional assignments, reporting managers, and business units, as indicated by corporate database records. External knowledge sharing was measured with group member surveys and performance was assessed using senior executive ratings. Ordered logit analyses showed that external knowledge sharing was more strongly associated with performance when work groups were more structurally diverse. Implications for theory and practice around the integration of work groups and social networks are addressed.
