In the contemporary context marked by globalization and the growing prominence of sustainable development, assessing urban tourism competitiveness has emerged as a crucial research domain. This paper aims to develop a comprehensive model for evaluating city tourism competitiveness, grounded in the principles of sustainable development. The model incorporates factors such as city tourism resources, environmental considerations, economic aspects, and societal factors. This holistic approach seeks to offer valuable insights for the city tourism industry. The study conducts a thorough analysis of current research both domestically and internationally, highlighting gaps and articulating the objectives and significance of the research. Employing a machine learning-based empowerment method, the paper determines the significance of evaluation indices and utilizes the Topsis method for assessing urban tourism competitiveness. Distinguishing itself from traditional evaluation methods, this model integrates the principles of sustainable development throughout the evaluation process, with environmental, social, and economic sustainability serving as pivotal evaluation indicators. Empirical analysis involves the evaluation of tourism competitiveness for select cities, facilitating inter-city comparisons. Results from empirical studies demonstrate the model's effectiveness in evaluating urban tourism competitiveness, providing targeted developmental recommendations for urban tourism.
... Additionally, compared to developed countries, reducing corruption levels in developing countries has a greater marginal return on tourism competitiveness [20]. Currently, research areas of focus are mainly concentrated on Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and Australia [21][22][23][24], while in China, it primarily concentrates on developed urban agglomerations along the eastern coast [25]. ...

This paper evaluated the regional tourism competitiveness of 22 county-level administrative regions in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China. The study analyzed the connotation of regional tourism competitiveness from the perspectives of resources and economic and environmental benefits, and established an evaluation index system for comprehensive competitiveness. The study used entropy weight TOPSIS to measure the level of tourism competitiveness in Ningxia, and used spatial association and hot and cold analysis to describe the spatial pattern of comprehensive tourism competitiveness in Ningxia. The results indicated that Lingwu City, Xixia District, and Huinong District have high comprehensive tourism competitiveness, while Jingyuan County, Haiyuan County, and Hongsipu District exhibit the weakest comprehensive competitiveness. The study also showed that regional economic development level competitiveness had the greatest impact on the comprehensive competitiveness of county tourism in Ningxia. The northern region and the southern region of Ningxia were the regions with high-high clusters and low-low clusters of tourism competitiveness, respectively. Based on the comprehensive evaluation results, the development level of tourism of Ningxia county was classified into four types: advanced development type, marginal dependence type, improved optimization type, and backward development type. Finally, the paper put forward targeted optimization suggestions in order to provide reference for Ningxia tourism functional zoning and high-quality development.

Identifying and revealing the coupling relationship between urbanization and ecological environment and its forming mechanism, and then putting forward regulation measures, will benefit urban management in making decisions. We examined the coupling process between new-style urbanization and ecological environment system of Fujian Province through the coupling model and coupling-coordination model, and realized the spatial visualization based on the index system of urbanization and ecological environment, in which the index weight was based on the variation coefficient. The results showed that the variation of coupling degree between new-type urbanization and ecological environment system was relatively stable, ranging from 0.77 to 0.99 during 2000 to 2015. There was no obvious difference among the cities except for the Putian in 2000 and Zhangzhou in 2010 were in the break-in stage. The coupling-coordination degree between new-type urbanization and ecological environment system fluctuated around 0.50 during 2000 to 2015 with significant spatial differentiation and shorter evolution time from east to west. The coupling-coordination types of Fujian Province were dominated by the harmonious development type, accompanied by the types of moderate unadjusted recession, moderate coordinated development, and high coordinated development. There was transformation phenomenon among different types. Xiamen was the only one deve-loped into the high coordinated development type in 2015. The city development was mainly featured by lagged urbanization, with the lagged ecological environment in Xiamen in 2010 and in both Fuzhou and Xiamen in 2015.

Understanding of the relationship between China's urbanization and economic development on provincial scale is of profound theoretical and practical significance. Based on the experience data of the 120 countries or regions in the world and 31 provinces (autonomous regions) in China, applying improved methods of quadrant map approach, this paper has a analysis of the relationship and spatial pattern between China's urbanization and economic development. Results are shown as follows. (1) The 31 provincial-level units are divided into six types. The type of sharp over-urbanization is 3, the type of medium over-urbanization is 2, the type of slight over-urbanization is 8, the type of basic coordination is 4, the type of medium under-urbanization is 5, and the type of slight under-urbanization is 9. (2) The relationship between urbanization and the level of economic development has significant regional differences on provincial scale. (3) The provincial pattern of urbanization and economic development presented a significant east-west difference. The eastern coastal areas are mainly over-urbanization, while the central and western regions are mainly under-urbanization. (4) The relationship between urbanization and the level of economic development is similar to Matthew effect. Two important insights are proposed. One is that the phenomenon of over-urbanization in some developed regions should be viewed and vigilant with some concern. The other is that the urbanization needs to be speeded up in the central and western regions.

“Seaside standards and culture patterns have now reached such stages of refinement that it is possible to judge a man's status, tastes, and income by the beach he attends…”. Some of the most intensive and highly specialized recreational land use exists along the ocean beaches of northeastern United States, providing a great range of social group appeal. In contrast to the essentially extensive recreational land use patterns of the rural, resource-oriented parks and forests under Federal or state control, the development of these intermediate and user oriented recreational facilities, frequently resourced-based, has been accomplished primarily through private enterprise operating in urban areas.

Is it appropriate to segment the leisure tourism market on the basis of consumer information search behaviors? The present study examines this question by contrasting two approaches to segmenting this market: post hoc and a priori. Using behavioral data collected in a survey of 585 auto travelers to Florida, analyses demonstrated that information search behavior is meaningfully related to systematic tourism behavior; information search and tourism context are the result of a number of situational, tourist, and marketplace contingencies; information search is associated with managerially-relevant tourism outcomes; and an a priori operationalization of information search is a more appropriate approach to segmentation on a number of criteria.RésuméLa recherche des renseignements touristiques.

This study presents a method of establishing competitiveness sets for international tourist destinations by using both quantitative (hard data) and qualitative (soft data) data collection. Discussion of findings is based on the analysis of survey data collected from British tourists visiting Turkey in the summer of 1998. Findings revealed that Mediterranean destinations were direct competitors of Turkey in summer tourism. Destination attributes which the sample population liked and complained about across the competitive set are presented and used to assess comparative competitive positions. Methodological issues and limitations are also discussed.
