Abstract

Background: Dhatu Sarata is defined as the supreme quality & functional aspect of Dhatu. (2) Chakrapani described it as "Vishuddhatara Dhatu," which means the finest, purest & excellent state of Dhatu. It is the actual test to measure an individual's strength (physical and mental). On the other hand, Intelligence is a feature that is defined to describe a person's cognitive abilities concerning their Sarata. Aim: The Present study primarily deals with intelligence quotient (IQ) & its correlation with Dhatu Sarata through questionnaires & assessments with special reference to Rasa and Rakta Sarata. Material & methods: The present survey (Observational) study was conducted on apparently healthy individuals randomly selected from O.P.D/I.P.D. of Pt. Khushilal Sharma Government (Autonomous) Ayurvedic College and Institute, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), including students and staff of the college and people living in the surrounding areas. All the volunteers who have Rasa or Rakta Sarata evaluated by Ayursoft software were further assessed for IQ with the help of the Wechsler Adult intelligence scale online test with 20 questions. A non-parametric test (Spearman Correlation) was used to explore the correlation between the two variables, i.e., Rasa Sarta &IQ and Rakta Sarta & IQ, as at least one of the variables. Result & observations: Out of 300 individuals, a total of 290 persons were found to be of Rasa Sara and Rakta Sara. There was a moderate correlation between Rasa Sarata & IQ, while Rakta Sarta and IQ showed a strong positive correlation. These positive findings obtained through this study validate the classical reference about the clinical manifestation of Rasa & Rakta Dhatusarata. Conclusion: Furthermore study can be carried out to find out its relationship with recent laboratory parameters. All remaining Dhatu Sarata can also be studied & compared with IQ level.

Sara is explained in context of 'Dashvidha Pariksha' in Charak Samhita to measure the strength (Bala) of an individual. Haematological parameters are most frequently used in routine investigations. It is obvious that both Sara and haematological parameters are used in ancient and modern science therefore, this study was planned to assess the variation in haematological parameters of different Sara individuals as per sex. Total 254 (156 males and 98 females) healthy individuals between the age of 18 to 35 were included in this study. Assessment of Sara was done in terms of total Sara score by questionnaire type proforma specially designed for this study. Haematological values provide important information about health status of a person like anaemia, polycythemia, any type of infection and others. Haematological parameters were analysed by automatic haematology analyzer. On correlation of the total Sara score and haematological values in male and female, significant variation in total Sara score as well as in haematological values was observed.

According to Ayurveda, an individual can be classified into any one of the seven constitutional types (Prakriti) depending on the dominance of one, two, or three Doshas. A ‘Dosha’ is representative of fundamental mechanisms that are responsible for homeostasis, and thus, to health. In the recent years, there have been several efforts to see whether certain physiological, haematological or biochemical parameters have any relationship with the constitutional types or not. The objective of the present study was to see if the results of autonomic function tests vary according to Prakriti of an individual. We conducted this study in clinically healthy volunteers of both the gender belonging to the age group of 17 to 35 years after obtaining their written consent. The Prakriti of these volunteers was assessed on the basis of a validated questionnaire and also by traditional method of interviewing. After confirming that the primary Dosha ascertained by both these methods matched, 106 volunteers were grouped into three on the basis of primary Dosha and were subjected to various autonomic function tests such as cold pressor test, standing-to-lying ratio, Valsalva ratio and pupillary responses such as pupil cycle time and pupil size measurement in light and dark. The results suggest that, the autonomic function tests in the healthy individuals may correlate linearly with the primary Dosha expressed in an individual. In particular, people with Kapha as the most dominant Dosha showed a tendency to have either a higher parasympathetic activity or a lower sympathetic activity with respect to their cardiovascular reactivity in comparison to the individuals with Pitta or Vata as the most dominant Dosha.

In Charaka Samhita 10 assessment criteria are described to judge the strength and immunity of a diseased person which are called as ‘ Dashavidha Pariksha’. Sara Lakshana of all seven dhatus along with Satva sara are described under it.This study mainly focussed to screen and assess Majja sara Lakshana. Majja is 6th dhatu among 7 dhatus by order. Total 17 characteristics were compiled mainly from Brihattrayi. In this study population of 100 individuals were screened for Sara parikshana and also for ‘Majja sara’ based on the results of basic screening of Sara Parikshana. The participants who were found ‘Majja sara’ by even minimum one characteristic were further evaluated by marking method on basis of the exclusiveness of the present characteristics. The results of this were analysed further to get clear view about grade ( Uttama,Madhyama,Alpa,Asara ) of the Sarata depending upon the exclusiveness of the characteristics.Majja Dhatu by order is 6th dhatu, is called ‘gambhir’ (deeper) dhatu. That might be the reason, Sarata of this dhatu has very rare occurrence. In this study 100 participants were screened for general Sara Parikshana. Among them only 12 individuals were found having Madhyam Majja sara lakshana. Remaining 88 fell in category of Alpa Majja sara individuals. Madhyam sara individuals were showing very high occurrence of exclusive Majja sara lakshana (above 80% ). So the quality of their Majjasarata is definitely superior.Â
