Handbook of Language Analysis in Psychology

Authors:

Abstract

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in the use of computerized text analysis methods to address basic psychological questions. This comprehensive handbook brings together leading language analysis scholars to present foundational concepts and methods for investigating human thought, feeling, and behavior using language. Contributors work toward integrating psychological science and theory with natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning. Ethical issues in working with natural language datasets are discussed in depth. The volume showcases NLP-driven techniques and applications in areas including interpersonal relationships, personality, morality, deception, social biases, political psychology, psychopathology, and public health.

Handbook of Language Analysis in Psychology
Edited by Morteza Dehghani and Ryan L. Boyd
“Language provides a richer, more detailed window into the human experience than any
other source of data, and large-scale computational techniques have created unprecedented
opportunities in the study of human psychology. This volume provides a comprehensive
examination of language analysis methods and how they are being used across an astonishing
range of psychological research. It will be highly valuable to students and scholars in
psychology who are seeking a relevant, up-to-date overview of text analysis methods.
Conversely, this book also represents an invitation to computational folks to better
understand the nature of psychological research questions and the ways that their text
analysis expertise can help advance understanding of what makes people tick.”
Philip Resnik, PhD, Department of Linguistics and Institute for Advanced Computer
Studies, University of Maryland, College Park
“The accelerating growth of new computational methods, theories, and applications in
language analysis opens up exciting possibilities for researchers, but it can also be daunting if
you are entering the field or trying to keep up to speed. But never fear! Dehghani and Boyd
have brought together a formidable crew of experts to create an accessible guide to the latest
developments in language analysis. This book is an ideal text for a graduate course, and can
serve as a reference and source of inspiration for researchers.”
Sanjay Srivastava, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Oregon
“This handbook assembles many of the best researchers who quantitatively analyze language
to better understand people. The coverage is impressively broad, from personality to politics,
from conversations and deception to the language of affect and morality. The methods used
are equally broad, from the use of classical lexica to modern vector embedding methods. This
book is ideal for a graduate seminar in psychology or related fields on the ways in which
language analysis is yielding insights into human thought, behavior, and communication.”
Lyle Ungar, PhD, Department of Computer and Information Science, University of
Pennsylvania

... However, they serve different goals. Dehghani and Boyd (2021) discuss the purpose, strengths, weaknesses of different methods of text analysis. One of the big strengths of our approach, the dictionary or word counting approach, is that we bring domain expertise. ...

Advances in the availability and sophistication of software to facilitate the analysis of secondary data have contributed toward the growth of textual analysis. 10-K reports are a particularly salient source of insight into an array of issues in accounting and finance research yet remain underutilized in marketing. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to offer a rationale for such analysis and a method that can be applied in B2B marketing. We draw on a strong tradition of textual analysis in finance to outline a method of text mining 10-K reports. We then discuss the downloading of raw texts, parsing raw text files and linking 10-Ks to various dependent measures. We provide links for downloading parsed 10-K files and suggest software for textual analysis. The framework offers B2B marketers a rich alternative to primary data and proprietary datasets. Ongoing advances in AI-enabled NLP text analysis further increase the future value of the approach for B2B marketers.

In many communities, certain segments of the population do not have trust and confidence in the police. These issues are particularly intense in some impoverished minority communities in which people are more likely to fear the police than to trust them. Much can be learned about the patterned dynamics between police and communities from the study of intergroup relations generally, and intergroup communication more specifically. Unfortunately, these phenomena have not yet been well studied from an intergroup perspective. In this prologue to the special issue, “The Police and the Policed,” we introduce contemporary trends in police–community relations from an intergroup perspective, and we provide a brief overview of the articles appearing in the special issue. We close by highlighting key take-aways from this collection, articulating a vision for future research on police–community relations from an intergroup perspective.

The words that people use in everyday life tell us about their psychological states: their beliefs, emotions, thinking habits, lived experiences, social relationships, and personalities. From the time of Freud’s writings about “slips of the tongue” to the early days of computer-based text analysis, researchers across the social sciences have amassed an extensive body of evidence showing that people’s words have tremendous psychological value. To appreciate some of the truly great pioneers, check out (Allport, 1942), Gottschalk and Gleser (1969), Stone et al., (1966), and Weintraub (1989). Although promising, the early computer methods floundered because of the sheer complexity of the task. In order to provide a better method for studying verbal and written speech samples, we originally developed a text analysis application called Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, or LIWC (pronounced “Luke”). The first LIWC application was developed as part of an exploratory study of language and disclosure (Francis & Pennebaker, 1992). The second (LIWC2001), third (LIWC2007), fourth (2015), and now fifth (LIWC-22) versions updated the original application with increasingly expanded dictionaries and sophisticated software design (Pennebaker et al., 2001, 2007, 2015). The most recent evolution, LIWC-22 (Pennebaker et al., 2022), has significantly altered both the dictionary and the software options to reflect new directions in text analysis. As with previous versions, the program is designed to analyze individual or multiple language files quickly and efficiently. At the same time, the program attempts to be transparent and flexible in its operation, allowing the user to explore word use in multiple ways.

In this Special Issue, we commemorate 40 years of publishing research in the Journal of Language & Social Psychology (JLSP). We first provide a brief glimpse of the history of the field of language and social psychology and the emergence of JLSP within it. This is then developed further by exploring the themes—and the relationships between them—arising over the four decades of the journal, by means of a Leximancer analysis of the titles and abstracts of all research articles since the journal’s inception. We describe our data-driven rationale for the topics selected for the Anniversary Issue and provide an overview of the articles that follow this Prologue; we highlight their unique features and contributions to the advancement of the field of language and social psychology.
