Abstract

In today’s online and blended classrooms, video use is essential for student and teacher success (Heilesen, 2010; Kay, 2012, 2014a). Using video has been proven to increase student engagement (Lowenthal et al., 2020), enhance instructor visibility (Martin & Bollinger, 2018), and improve student learning in online contexts (Hsin & Cigas, 2013). Using video can shift control over students, determining the pace (rewind, pause, forward) and regulating their information intake. Videos are typically used to present information to students about concepts, applications and procedures (Kay, 2012, 2014b). Students watch these videos to help them prepare for class (e.g., a flipped classroom) or review for assignments or tests. Sometimes videos inspire and motivate students (e.g., TED Talks). In addition to instruction-based videos, Kay (2012) identified four other areas where videos can support teaching and learning, including administration, student assignments, feedback, and building community.

... Masterclass participants noted that take-home assignments, extended course content, recordings of lectures, and increased flexibility around the timing of masterclass sessions would further increase their satisfaction with the masterclass series. Kay and Mann (2022) have advocated for the use of student video assignments and feedback videos to increase the effectiveness of communication between students and instructors and promote a deeper understanding of course content. However, Horn (2020) and Picardo and colleagues (2021) suggest that the use of recordings may exacerbate existing educational inequities and promote unhelpful student behaviors such as binge watching. ...

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered the adoption of online education across all sectors worldwide, which was particularly challenging for disciplines that rely on hands-on learning such as bioarchaeology. Although the impacts of this rapid transition have been well investigated in fields such as anatomy and forensic anthropology, there has been little research into its effects within bioarchaeology. We address this deficit by investigating two common perceptions around online learning from a bioarchaeological perspective: (1) online techniques are inadequate for teaching practical skills, and (2) online learning environments lack a sense of community, thereby negatively affecting learner experiences. To gauge learner perceptions around online practical education in this field, we conducted a qualitative survey of participants in a bioarchaeology masterclass series. Results suggest that students perceive online learning to be as effective for practical training as in-person alternatives and that online learning may engender a sense of community when offered using a collaborative, interactive approach. Based on our results we provide several key recommendations for online education in bioarchaeology, including an active emphasis on social engagement and relationship building, culturally appropriate teaching, and the use of resources to encourage flexibility in learning. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Scopus veri tabanında çevrimiçi öğrenme videoları üzerine 2012-2022 yılları arasında yayınlanmış makalelerin bibliyometrik analizinin yapılmasıdır. Böylece çevrimiçi öğrenme videolarına ilişkin makalelerin son on yıldaki mevcut durumu tespit edilerek eğilimler ortaya çıkarılmaktadır.

Videos are commonly used in education. Benefitting from instructional videos in learning processes empowers students’ academic outcomes. In spite of this, educators have no consensus on optimal video length. There is a need to cease speculations on optimal video length since most of them have been relying only on context-based tips or best practices. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to delve into the optimal video length discussion through the lens of perceived learning and flow experience. We employed repeated measure experimental design with randomization of treatment order for each participant. Twenty-eight university students from two big cities in Türkiye volunteered to participate in the study. Short, medium, and long videos were compared via Friedman test. Results of this study substantiated instructional video length does not seem to affect students’ perceived learning and their overall flow experience. However, they tend to concentrate and focus better on short videos. We call for an end to optimal video length discussion for videos shorter than 10 minutes, especially in terms of learning. The implications relying on the findings were discussed in terms of differences between “thinking to be in flow” and “being actually in flow.” The recommendations are given in detail in the full text.

Library snackables are pedagogical strategies that allow library users to digest information content in short bites. The purpose of a snackable is to communicate useful and understandable information over a short time frame, an aspect that often appeals to Generation Z students. This study launched six one-minute videos informing students about library services and resources. A mixed methods survey instrument (206 respondents) and YouTube viewing data (820 views) were used to gauge student opinion, analyze audience engagement, and evaluate knowledge retention. The findings reveal that students have a positive perception of short library videos, which further help with information transfer and retention.

Student engagement increases student satisfaction, enhances student motivation to learn, reduces the sense of isolation, and improves student performance in online courses. This survey-based research study examines student perception on various engagement strategies used in online courses based on Moore’s interaction framework. One hundred and fifty-five students completed a 38-item survey on learner-to-learner, learner-to-instructor, and learner-to-content engagement strategies. Learner-to-instructor engagement strategies seemed to be most valued among the three categories. Icebreaker/introduction discussions and working collaboratively using online communication tools were rated the most beneficial engagement strategies in the learner-to-learner category, whereas sending regular announcements or email reminders and providing grading rubrics for all assignments were rated most beneficial in learner-to-instructor category. In the learner-content category, students mentioned working on real-world projects and having discussions with structured or guiding questions were the most beneficial. This study also analyzed the effect of age, gender, and years of online learning experience differences on students’ perception of engagement strategies. The results of the study have implications for online instructors, instructional designers, and administrators who wish to enhance engagement in the online courses.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced colleges and universities to move all in-person courses to a remote or online learning format. As a result, many faculty, including teacher educators , opted to transition their courses to live synchronous web meetings using web conferencing tools like Zoom. Despite benefits of synchronous communication, there are constraints with the use and overuse of synchronous live meetings (which many teacher educators ended up experiencing during the pandemic). In this paper, we describe the experiences of how four different faculty, at four different universities, used asynchronous video to maintain connection and engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conclude with implications for practice and future research.

Research is needed to understand how to best design video lectures that foster learning. We tested whether instructor presence is better afforded through methods that increase students’ access to the instructor's eye gaze, thereby enhancing learning through increased social agency. Specifically, we compared the eye-gaze behavior of college students who viewed an organic chemistry video lecture with the instructor using either a conventional whiteboard or a transparent whiteboard. These lecture methods differ in the degree to which they allow students to view the instructor's eye gaze. Using eye-tracking methods, we compared students’ attention to the instructor's head during direct gaze events (i.e., when the instructor looked into the camera) and gaze guidance events (i.e., when the instructor looked at the whiteboard), and to the written and drawn information on the whiteboard. Results show that students who viewed a transparent whiteboard lecture attended more to the instructor and less to the material drawn on the board than students who viewed a conventional whiteboard lecture. The transparent group also performed equivalently to the conventional group on learning performance. Overall, this study demonstrates that the instructor's presence can compete with words and visuals drawn on the board by the instructor for students’ attention.

Social presence is a popular construct used to describe how people socially interact in online courses. Online educators continue to try different ways to establish and maintain social presence in online courses. However, research to date has not identified which strategies, or types of strategies, are best for establishing social presence. We investigated student perceptions of various strategies of establishing and maintaining social presence using a mixed methods case study approach in two different fully online courses. Results suggest that students are more interested in connecting with their instructor than their peers; different students like different social presence strategies; and students have different overall social presence needs. Various strategies and implications for practice are addressed throughout.

This paper discusses the principle of image preprocessing of digital video interpretation according to the requirement of digital video interpretation on the basis of the analysis of characteristics of image preprocessing algorithms. And a novel algorithm is provided that adopts local contrast enhancement algorithm based on the nonlinear characteristic of eye vision response following median filter. It has strong adaptability, and it not only improves the contrast of image, but also enhances the dim target and detail of image efficiently. So it is very fit for the auto image enhancement of digital video interpretation, and improves the performance of interpretation system.

Introduction. This study addresses the following research question: is the use of text on the World Wide Web declining? If so, when did it start declining, and by how much has it declined? Method. Web pages are downloaded from the Internet Archive for the years 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014, producing 600 captures of 100 prominent and popular Webpages in the United States from a variety of sectors. Analysis. Captured Webpages were analysed to uncover if the percentage of text they present to users has declined over the past fifteen years using a computer vision algorithm, which deciphers text from non-text. The percentage of text per Webpage is computed as well as the mean percentage of text per year. A one-way ANOVA is used to uncover if the percentage of text on Webpages is reliant on the year the Website was produced. Results. Results reveal that the percentage of text on Webpages climbed from the late 1990s to 2005 where it peaked (with 32.4% of the Webpage), and has been in decline ever since. Websites in 2014 have 5.5% less text than 2005 on average, or 26.9% text. This is more text than in the late 1990s, with Webpages having only 22.4% text. Conclusions. This study confirms using a systematic approach what many have observed anecdotally: that the percentage of text on Webpages is decreasing.

An ongoing challenge to occupational therapy educators is how to provide resources and strategies that best assist students in learning, retaining, and replicating protocols in clinical manual assessment. This pilot survey study explored how 43 first-year master's of occupational therapy students enrolled in a kinesiology course perceived the value of implementing instructor-produced YouTube® videos of in-class assessment demonstrations. The videos, taken on a smartphone, were uploaded to a private YouTube URL created by the instructor and then linked to a pre-established Moodle learning platform. By the end of the 6-wk course, students had registered 2,573 views averaging 60 views per student. Postcourse mixed survey results revealed students perceived that the videos improved the quality of the course, increased their level of engagement and learning, and boosted confidence in their manual skills. Survey results also found that students correlated the instructor's willingness to develop online videos with a commitment to student learning.
