Neurofeedback as a treatment intervention in ADHD

Abstract

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a very common neurobehavioral disorder that affects children and adolescents. The prevalence of ADHD worldwide has been estimated in 5.9 % of youth and 2.5 % of adults, as found in studies worldwide. ADHD can affect the ability of a child to grow academically and socially and can persist beyond adolescence into adulthood. It also results in a huge economic burden for healthcare systems, as more children are diagnosed with ADHD. Non-pharmacologic treatments of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are more attractive to people since they lack the common side effects that certain drugs may cause. Among non-pharmacologic treatments, neurofeedback shows promising results. Moreover, the American Academy of Pediatrics approved NF as “level 1 best support” in an evidence-based treatment for childhood ADHD. The main objective of this research was to demonstrate the effect of neurofeedback sessions to ADHD students and young adults. The research method included 20 pupils, aged between 15 and 25 years old, mixed-gender, diagnosed with ADHD, taking part in a single-blind randomized trial. Parents attributed with their written consent for the participation of their childen to the study. The NF group (n=10) underwent ten NF sessions. The control group (n = 10) underwent ten NF Sham sessions. Pre-post interventions of cognitive attention skills tests along with EEG attention measurements were given to both groups to evaluate each intervention. Results indicated p <0.05 significance on both interventions, with an NF taking precedence over NF Sham. Future research with large blind RCTs is needed in order to examine NF effectiveness further.
