Ukr. antarctic center. - 1998. - V. 2. - p. 56-63. - Bibliography: 7 titles. - Russian A general description of the meteorological program carried out at the Akademik Vernadsky station is given, as well as the main climatic characteristics obtained in the 1997/1998 season during the Second Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. Meteorological records of 1997 are also indicated. Data on observations of snow depth, precipitation, sea water temperature, ice conditions, optical and rare phenomena in the atmosphere during 1997/1998 are given. The presented climatic characteristics and their primary analysis can serve as a basis for further research both by specialists in the field of climatology, glaciology and other areas of meteorology and related geosciences, and for a wide range of consumers of meteorological information (shipping, aviation, tourism, medicine, construction, etc.)

This report summarizes the feasibility study to introduce intercontinental air operation for the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) by establishing hard-surface runways near JARE stations. Syowa Station and the Yamato Mountains areas were considered to identify the favorable sites for runway construction on the basis of historical meteorological data and glaciological conditions. ... Glaciological research in King George Island: Missions and developments in the 1990s

In the 1990s, three international expeditions carried out extensive investigations on the King George Island (KGI) ice cap. They were organized and logistically supported by the Brazilian Antarctic Program, and in the scope of the ''Glaciology of the South Shetland (GLASS)'' program supported by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). [Show full abstract] glacial drainage basins fluctuations using remote sensing techniques, 2) A shallow firn and ice coring program, 3) Geophysical surveys to determine ice thickness and internal structure, and 4) Climatology of the ice cap. This paper outlines these investigations. Results show an ice cover of 1,044 km 2 (91.7% of KGI) that reaches a maximum thickness of 395 m. The KGI ice cap lost 65 km 2 from 1956 to 2000, this is concomitant to an increase of the mean annual atmospheric temperature of 1.1 • C from 1947 to 1995. Only the upper 2-3 m of the snow pack provide data that are representative of the original precipitation composition. A Geographic Information System to help monitor the ice cap as well as human activities in KGI is proposed and will be implemented by the Institut für Physische Geographie, Universität Freiburg (Germany) and the Núcleo de Pesquisas Antárticas e Climáticas, UFRGS (Brazil).

RES Signatures of Ice Bottom Near to Dome C (Antarctica)

Geophysical surveys have played a fundamental role in glaciology, climatology, and geology studies conducted at and around the site of the EPICA Dome C Ice Core (Antarctica). Analysis of radio-echo sounding (RES) data collected during the 2009 and 2011 Italian Antarctic Expeditions, in the immediate vicinity (2 km) of the Core site, reveals the presence of small-scale bedrock structures. Data ... [Show full abstract] acquired during the 2011 campaign, which applied the latest updates of our instrument, show double echoes from the ice bottom separated by very small time intervals. These reflections are distributed close to the topographic dome and do not always correspond to particular features of the bedrock structure, but instead may correspond to small-scale subglacial water storage. The unprecedented spatial resolution of the basal environment for Dome C from these recent surveys allows us to identify this and other features that have been missed by previous larger scale RES surveys of this area.
