An overview of coming out research: Introducing a three‐lens typology

Abstract and Figures

Coming out is a fast‐growing global research area with numerous interdisciplinary publications dedicated to its exploration. To contribute to a more organised and concise way of understanding this rapidly expanding field, I introduce a three‐lens typology. Based on the systematic categorisation of over 700 publications, coming out research can be viewed via the following three lenses: (1) the different social institutions in which individuals come out, (2) to whom individuals come out, and (3) the content of individuals' coming out. The identified lenses focus on ‘coming out in’, ‘coming out to’ and ‘coming out as’, which adds to current conceptual understandings of ‘coming out into’ and ‘coming out of’. Further, lens 3 demonstrates another usage shift of the coming out terminology. The concept of coming out originally was used outside of sexuality contexts and currently is being used more broadly again. However, in contrast to its original meaning, the new areas of application (e.g., fatness, atheism, illness) are still linked to conceptualisations and experiences of non‐normativity. This publication assists students, scholars, and practitioners with navigating the extensive amount of coming out literature. It further illustrates the potential and challenges of coming out research and points towards the future—the if, how and what—of this field.

Abstract
Coming out is a fast-growing global research area with nu-

This dissertation explores how Korean television dramas represent the LGBTQ+ community, including recent changes, prospects, and limitations. 25 television dramas with LGBTQ+ characters and narratives are selected to comprise the corpus, with Critical Discourse Analysis as the main Methodology. Each conceptual framework of ‘Visibility’, ‘Representation’, ‘Disclosure’, ‘Framing’, and ‘Sexuality’ constitutes the main chapters of the analysis. They serve as five different lenses to investigate whether there are queer characters on screen, and if so, who they are, how they are displayed, and why they appear in narratives. The aim is to conduct a comparative study to inspect the field from a wider perspective and incorporate recent changes in the media industry, along with their influences on the LGBTQ+ community. The analysis of the drama corpus elucidates five significant findings. Firstly, in terms of ‘Visibility’, both exposure and diversity have expanded over time, but most characters appear as supporting roles. Secondly, the ‘Representation’ is realistic as the dramas depict the detailed position of the characters within the narrative. Thirdly, there are several outing cases in ‘Disclosure’ and a limited spectrum of reactions after coming out, yet hopeful in that affirmative ones also exist. Fourthly, there remain limitations in ‘Framing’ after heteronormativity and stereotypes. Lastly, as for ‘Sexuality’, romance and intimacy are selectively manipulated and concealed. These five analyses assert the positive aspects of having more queer discourses on screen, but also acknowledge the drawbacks in that some still reinforce the dominant system. They become essential evidence in revealing the power dynamics and examining the realities of Korean society. Overall, this dissertation guides the Korean media industry on how to deal with media in the direction of fairly representing, and ultimately, going along with the LGBTQ+ community.

Generative AI has captured the public imagination as a tool that promises access to expertise beyond the technical jargon and expense that traditionally characterize such infospheres as those of medicine and law. Largely absent from the current literature, however, are interrogations of generative AI’s abilities to deal in culturally responsive communication, or the expertise interwoven with culturally aware, socially responsible, and personally sensitive communication best practices. To interrogate the possibilities of cultural responsiveness in generative AI, we examine the patterns of response that characterize ChatGPT-3.5’s advice for coming out. Specifically, we submitted 100 prompts soliciting coming out advice to GPT-3.5, variegating each of those prompts slightly to account for intersectional identities. From the analysis, we find that, while the responses are largely in-line with best practices, there are also instances that might represent problematics concerning the interpellation of the user or the persons to whom one is coming out.

Does learning political candidates’ social categories through visual cues affect voter preferences? This paper explores this question by conducting a visual conjoint survey experiment with 2324 German voters, varying whether respondents received information on candidates through explicit labels or pretested AI-generated candidate pictures. The results confirm our expectations that the way in which social categories are perceived affects preferences, with visual cues having a more significant effect on voter preferences compared to textual cues, leading to more discriminatory preferences for certain social categories. Moreover, we show that the effect of visual cues is moderated by the visibility of social categories, with visible social categories, such as gender binaries and ethnic in-/out-group, eliciting more discriminatory preferences with visual cues. The study sheds light on how visible and invisible social categories affect political candidates’ preferences and emphasizes the importance of considering the intersectionality of social categories and their relationship with ideology.

Despite the prevailing perception that sexuality should be openly discussed, sexuality-related social exclusion persists, posing challenges for individuals. This mixed-methods study explores the perception of sexuality-related social exclusion experiences in young adults, identifying strategies within sexuality education to mitigate these challenges. The convenient sample included 167 students (18-25 years) in Lithuania. The study reveals that when young adults perceive the reason for their social exclusion experiences to be cultural rather than personal, they usually assign little significance to them. In addition, gender-specific experiences of sexuality-related social exclusion are identified. While the study is only exploratory, the results suggest that parents are incapable of preventing sexuality-related social exclusion alone. Sexuality education emerges as a crucial tool in addressing these challenges.

Children's coming out has a significant impact at the family level, and par-ents' reactions can affect their children's well-being. Research investigating parents' perspectives is still limited outside the USA and primarily includes parents involved in LGB associations. Our study investigates coming out within families in Italy, a context characterized by heteronormativity and high stigma toward sexual minorities, with parents not involved in LGB associations. The aim was to explore the meanings parents attributed to their child's coming out and look at how it reshaped their relationships with their offspring in light of the theoretical model elaborated by Chrisler (2017) on studies conducted in the US context. Thirteen participants were interviewed (10 mothers, aged 43-63): ten with a gay son, two with a lesbian daughter and one with a bisexual daughter. The thematic analysis identified four themes that can be framed in Chrisler's theoretical model and then extended its field of application to a new socio-cultural context. The discussion highlights some features transversal to the themes that can be better understood if related to specific traits of the Italian family and relational culture, emphasizing the importance of educational and cultural interventions directed at parents who are not yet involved in associative networks.

Thus, Dan decided to stay in the closet until being promoted to associate professor, in line with Pugh's (1998) study which finds that the increase in job security once tenure is granted allows the LGB 3 academics in the US the freedom to be more out. During Xi Jinping's presidency, the increasingly repressive political control over Chinese universities has had a significant impact on academic research. Yet, little is known about how Chinese academics navigate such a climate. Drawing on interviews with 11 gay academics in China, this article explores their motivations and strategies for conducting queer research. It is shown that participants submit to heteronormativity and the Party authorities by managing their sexual identity, keeping a low profile and practising self-censorship in their research. However, they can also expand the institutional space for queer research by strategically mobilising various forms of power and discourses and highlighting the legitimacy of their research. Through the queer theoretical lens, this article presents gay academics' agency in conducting queer research as involving simultaneous conformity and resistance in relation to hetero-normativity and political control in Chinese academia.

The legal treatment of and attitudes toward sexual minorities has changed considerably over recent decades in the United States, highlighting the role of historical context in the unfolding of human lives. Yet, a full application of the life course perspective to the topic of structural inequalities faced by sexual minorities is missing from the scholarly literature. Through synthesizing and analyzing research findings from the past 15 years, we explain how the five tenets of the life course framework apply to sexual minorities, including (1) the interplay of history and human lives, (2) the timing of lives, (3) linked lives, (4) human development and aging as lifelong processes, and (5) human agency. In doing so, we argue that a life course perspective is crucial for understanding the nature and consequences of prejudice and discrimination faced by sexual minorities. We end with discussion of the need for additional research and methodological innovations regarding distinctive aging experiences, cumulative inequality, and intersectionality.

Coming out process is a necessary step for a LGBTQ person in order to develop integrative sexual and transgender identity (Cass, 1984; Manning, 2014). and mental health of LGBTQ people is under strong influence by the family and social support and their reactions to coming out (D’Augelli, 2002; Ryan et al., 2010; Ryan, Legate, & Winstein, 2015). The goal of the present research is to explore what is the experience of mothers of LGBTQ children in Serbia after the children’s coming out? Using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, 2015), this study explored the experience of eight mothers of LGBTQ youth in Serbia after their children came out. From the analysis 4 main themes emerged: We started a conversation, and then he told me everything: what, how, where” – The context of finding out, “…and that is something very terrifying, that someone could hurt my child because he is what he is” – Mothers’ reactions, “I needed to see that he is completely well” – Process of adaptation, “Are we strong enough to bear all that?” – Parent and family identity. The results have shown that after finding out, mothers have a broad variety of reactions from surprise and shock to anger and sadness (Ben-Ari, 1989), after which the process of accepting child’s identity begins. That process was composed of different questions and challenges mothers faced and needed to overcome, either with professional or support from co-parent, with social support and information gathered from children or internet. The adaptation process resulted in integration of child’s identity in family’s identity, showing a developmental path mothers go through in order to accept child’s identity, but also showing possibilities for practical interventions in working with LGBTQ children and their families.

Many scholars address the coming out process of identity disclosure for students with minoritized gender and sexual identities. Despite the growth of scholarship in this area, little is known about identity disclosure for asexual college students. Using the framework of strategic outness, this article draws on the qualitative interviews of 12 asexual college students in exploring their complex and multi-faceted negotiations around identity management. Findings include three aspects of strategic outness: strategies, motivational discourses, and social relationships. Collectively, the findings from the study provide new information about the breadth of asexual experiences and the importance of understanding how asexual peoples’ multiple identities distinctly influence their strategic identity management.

Coming out is the process of acknowledging same-sex attractions to oneself and to others. It is both a personal and a public process. For many gay and bisexual students, college marks a pivotal point where for the first time they feel free to explore their same-sex attractions. This book is about the struggles students face in coming out. The focus is twofold: the experiences individuals face in coming to terms with their sexual identity and the process of developing a group identity. The development of a group identity involves a degree of political investment. For some students, becoming political means adopting a queer persona. As one student noted, Queer is kind of an `in your face' attitude toward heterosexism and homophobia. A primary focus of this book revolves around the notion of queer identity and how students engage as cultural workers seeking both campus and societal change.

Safe Spaces: Making Schools and Communities Welcoming to LGBT Youth is the first book to offer a comprehensive view of the complex lives of LGBT youth of all ages, from kindergarten through college. Drawing on a wealth of research collected from first-person accounts of students, family, educators, and community members, the authors not only chronicle the struggles of LGBT youth but also describe models of inclusive school and community environments. The authors address the breadth of experiences of LGBT youth—in and out of the classroom, at home and in the community, and in personal interactions with allies and antagonists. They also reveal how these young people, their friends and families, teachers, and dedicated allies stem the tide of LGBT exclusion. Most important, Safe Spaces offers action steps for readers who want to make their own homes, schools, and communities safe and welcoming spaces for LGBT youth.

Several national standards and accrediting bodies highlight the importance of fostering supportive school-to-home relationships. Despite initiatives to connect schools with parents and family members, family en- gagement and parental involvement practices for families of diverse ra - cial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds varies considerably. Such a critical interrogation of school-to-home relationships, however, for fami - lies headed by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) parents has yet to be fully developed. This paper attempts to fill this research void by criti- cally examining studies focused on the experiences of LGBT parents and caregivers with regard to their children’s schooling. Three overall themes encompass these experiences: a disclosure dilemma, school safety con - cerns, and school-based marginalization of LGBT identities. This paper follows with a set of implications for practice, policy, and future research.

Objective: According to research participants, those who come out with their pedophilia are less likely to abuse children. Method: This study builds on qualitative research with 16 participants/members of a self-help group for people with pedophilic orientation. Results: Individuals who come out are better equipped mentally to cope with their pedophilia and coming out makes possible support from their social environment. Coming out is, however, extremely difficult, since it is associated with the label ‘child abuser’. Conclusion: An understanding approach to people with pedophilia who do not want to abuse children may help prevent child sexual abuse by allowing for more access to resources, treatment, and education.

In this study, I examined three case studies of Assigned-Female-At-Birth (AFAB) teenagers who came out to their families in the course of therapy; all cases are derived from private practice work from 2015 to 2018. These all have in common some of the important and distinct differences between “coming out” as LGB and “coming out” as transgender or nonbinary. Overall, these cases emphasize: (1) Specific needs of transgender teenagers and young adults, particularly with regard to appealing for permission to use hormones; (2) Race and class implications for coming out as transgender and non-binary; (3) The necessity of better general education about transgender lives; and (4) The impact of parents on transitioning experiences and self-identity. The different outcomes of gender identity outness, including different parameters for what parental approval and validation means, are explored. I conclude with clinical implications for doing work with transgender teenagers and their parents, along with advice to practitioners for how to work with a sample of parental responses in order to minimize trauma and harm to transgender and non-binary teens.
