‘Scholarly Identity and Gender in the Respublica litteraria: The Cases of Luisa Sigea (1522-1560) and Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673)’

Abstract

This essay aims to provoke a more critical analysis of women's scholarly contributions by identifying and explaining continuities and discontinuities in publishing strategies over time across borders. More specifically, it locates the publications of two notable cases, Luisa Sigea and Margaret Cavendish, within the larger context of premodern knowledge communities -- namely, by showing the conventional, rhetorical value of their works' paratextual and metadiscursive practices, including the use of gendered stances, in relation to classical and modern ones (i.e. the emphasis on an author's female gender served as a promotional point to target -- by identification, empathy, or curiosity -- various interpretive communities / reading markets). Ultimately, it argues that, as cultural products, Sigea and Cavendish's publications served various social needs, chiefly a scholarly one -- again, this collective, mixed-sex intent is reflected in the publications' constant interaction (i.e. adherence, re-adaptation) of traditional and modern conventions, male and female.
