[Coşar, İ. & Danışman, T. 2022. Two new records for the spider fauna of Turkey
(Araneae: Salticidae). Munis Entomology & Zoology, 17 (1): 430-433]
ABSTRACT: In this study, two species belong to Menemerus genus are new for the spider
fauna of Turkey reported. These species are Menemerus bivittatus (Dufour, 1831) (♀) and
Menemerus taeniatus (L. Koch, 1867) (♀). The characteristic features and photographs of
two species are presented. The distribution of these species in Turkey is also mapped.
KEY WORDS: Araneae, Mediterranean, new record, Salticidae, Turkey
Spiders (Order Araneae), under Class Arachnida, form the largest group of
this class with 129 families, 4228 genera and 49669 species in the world.
Salticidae Blackwall, 1841 is the largest family of spiders, with 6354 described
species (World Spider Catalog, 2021). Currently, 448 species belonging to 63
genera from the Salticidae family are known from Europe (Nentwig et al., 2021).
With the recent studies in Turkey, the number of species belonging to the
Salticidae family has increased to 148 (Coşar & Erdek, 2021; Danışman et al.,
2021). Among these species, the genus Menemerus Simon, 1868 is represented by
only one species as Menemerus semilimbatus (Hahn, 1829) in Turkey. In this
study, we add two jumping spider species belonging to the genus Menemerus as a
new records to the spider fauna of Turkey. With this work, the species number of
known salticids in Turkey is raised to 150 species.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The samples were collected with the help of an aspirator from different
provinces of Turkey. Samples were photographed using a Canon EOS 250D
camera attached to the Leica S8APO microscope. Images have been montaged
using ‘Combine ZM’ image stacking software and ‘Photoshop CC 2019’ image
editing software. The female genitalia was dissected, cleaned, and kept in lactic
acid for 2-3 days. Specimens were deposited at Arachnological Museum of
Kırıkkale University (KUAM). The map of species distribution was prepared using
SimpleMappr program (Shorthouse, 2010). All measurements are expressed in
millimeters. Abbreviations: ALE — anterior lateral eyes, AME — anterior median
eyes, Fe — femur, PLE — posterior lateral eyes, PME — posterior median eyes, Pa
— patella, Ta — tarsus, Ti — tibia, Mt — metatarsus.
