Teknoloji korkusu gibi belirli görüngülere yönelik korkular, bireyin geçmiş öğrenme deneyimlerinden kaynaklanabilmekte ve yine öğrenme deneyimleriyle üstesinden gelinebilmektedir. Bu durum, teknoloji korkusunun hem önlenebilecek hem de –eğer önlenememişse- eğitim yoluyla üstesinden gelinebilecek bir duygu olduğunu göstermektedir. Teknoloji korkusuyla ilgili daha kapsayıcı bir anlayış kazanmak, bu duygunun önlenmesi ve üstesinden gelinmesi için yararlı olabilecek öğrenme deneyimlerinin geliştirilmesi, teknolojik yapıtların teknoloji korkusunu dikkate alarak ve kültürel olarak daha seçilebilir bir biçimde tasarlanabilmesi, bireylerin teknolojiyle olan etkileşimlerinin iyileştirilmesi, teknolojinin kabulü, teknolojinin eğitimle bütünleştirilmesi, çalışanların performansının yükseltilmesi ve iş güvenliği alanlarında topluma katkı sağlayacaktır. Bu katkılar, bireyin hem özel yaşamında hem eğitim yaşamında hem de iş yaşamında daha başarılı, verimli ve dolayısıyla da daha mutlu olmasına yardımcı olacaktır. Öte yandan, teknoloji korkusuyla ilgili olarak bilimsel bilgiye dayanan bir bilinç ve başa çıkma becerileri geliştirmek, bireysel hak ve özgürlüklere yönelik saldırılar karşısında bireylerin daha güçlü olabilmelerine de olanak tanıyacaktır. Teknoloji korkusu ve teknofobi ile ilgili yapılacak araştırmalar sonucunda üretilecek bilimsel bilgi işbu bilinç ve becerilerin geliştirilmesine katkı sağlayacaktır.

Cognitive Reserve and Digital Confidence among Older Adults as New Paradigm for Resilient Aging

Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the digital confidence of elder adults and identify behavioral patterns for technology that are related to cognitive abilities among elders. Method An observational study was conducted using a sample of 94 elders, aged 53 to 86 years. Neuropsychological and emotional measures were used, and technology use was assessed. Results Finding showed elders by resilient neuropsychological aspects can have a good affinity for technology. We examined the role of not only cognitive reserve levels but also demographic characteristics (i.e., age, educational level) and found that elderly were more adherent to digital resources. Technology can be a beneficial resource to those with medium levels of cognitive reserve and make them feel “like they are leading an active lifestyle.” Conclusions The focal point of our findings is the relevance of cognitive reserve during older adulthood as a key factor that should be examined in investigations on successful aging; it would be more interesting to examine these factors within the context of analyses on the impact of technology on aging and digital living.

Development and validation of Digital Writing Scale for preservice teachers

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Digital Writing Scale that measures the perspectives of individuals on digital writing. A total of 615 preservice teachers studying in the faculty of education at a state university in Turkey participated in the study (n = 615). The data were collected in two phases for exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Three hundred pre-service teachers participated in the first phase and 315 in the second phase of the study. In the analyses of the data obtained in the first phase, the exploratory factor analysis employed principal axis factoring technique with direct oblimin rotation and a two-factor model, both of which consists of 7 items, was obtained. The Cronbach’s α coefficients were 0.851 for digital translating factor and 0.852 for digital reviewing factor. In the second phase, confirmatory factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimation demonstrated a statistically significant model fit to the data with five indices indicating a good fit and one indicating a substantial fit. The study, which endorsed the Hayes and Flower model and cognitive process theory of writing, resulted in a valid and reliable Digital Writing Scale. Digital Writing Scale is the first Turkish scale that measures the perspectives of individuals on digital writing. Factor scores did not differ according to sex or department of the respondents.

Emotion and COVID-19: Toward an Equitable Pandemic Response

This article discusses the ways in which healthcare professionals can use emotion as part of developing an ethical response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Affect theory, a growing approach to inquiry in the social sciences and humanities that appraises the historical and cultural contexts of emotions as expressed through art and politics, offers a frame for clinicians and researchers to consider ethical questions that surround the reopening of the United States economy in the wake of COVID-19. This article uses affect theory to describe how healthcare workers’ emotions are useful for formulating a reopening plan grounded in collective action and a duty to do no harm.

Safety first: The risk of over-reliance on technology in navigation

Modern navigation heavily relies on technology. A modern ship's bridge is a high-tech centre with various equipment, such as Radar/ARPA, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite communications, and so on. The ability to operate various maritime technologies is among the most important part of navigation officers’ knowhow. However, as any technology can be an error, there will be failure happen on maritime technologies, such as navigational sensors and computer-based bridge systems. As an unsafe behaviour, over-reliance on technologies in watch keeping may have disastrous consequences. This article analysed the relationship between safe navigation of a ship and an increasing reliance placed on technology by master and officers. It identified at which stage a reliance on technology becomes an over-reliance, and the major causes of this, such as insufficient training and fatigue. Finally, it examines the consequences of an over-reliance on technology and makes some proposals on how these consequences can be prevented.

Social Media and Environmental Activism: Framing Climate Change on Facebook by Global NGOs

Analyzing Facebook content produced by 289 global climate nonprofits from 18 countries, this study investigates these NGOs’ framing of climate change. Of the three protest frames, diagnostic was most popular. Of the three aspects of climate change, including impact, action, and efficacy, action was used most frequently, while efficacy was the least common. Messages refer to effects at the present time. NGOs from developed countries are more likely than those from developing nations to discuss climate actions. Climate impacts are more likely to appear in these NGOs’ persuasive messages than efficacy. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.
