Soil health management towards sustainable agriculture is discussed.
Agriculture is the primary livelihood for the existence of humankind. Sustainable farming depends on the use of inputs and disposal of produce from the farm as a system. In this way, every bit of activity associated with agricultural livelihoods is necessarily linked with three baseline goals of economic, environmental, and social achievements. This book chapter discusses the role of #climate as a factor of soil #formation; mitigation of #GHGs and management of #climatechange. Land, labour, capital, and entrepreneurship are very important for agriculture. Sustainability of this farming profession must involve commitment towards accomplishments for the ‘2Rs’ of respect for humans and judicious management of resources. As agriculture is to land, so land is to the soil. Inputs are applied in the soil to get more produce. For achieving suitable yield from the land, the soil should get a return of some of its mineral portions as continuously taken up by crops as their nutrients from soil mass, or otherwise managing soil health for sustainability in productivity of soil through some variations in cultural techniques involving crops in rotations, managing organic matter, water, tillage operations, etc. In this way, apparently simple flow of resources through the soil to disposal as farm-produce is not linear and necessarily involves executions of various multiple activities which need analysis of soil health management through a pluralistic approach for achieving sustainability in agriculture.
