This paper reviews the present state of the act of advanced manufacturing technology of the manufacturing in the Nigerian economy. Furthermore, this review also carried out a study on the current trend of an advanced level of operation of the manufacturing industry in Nigeria. In this study, some key changelings are identified, and possible solutions are recommended on why the innovative technology is yet to be embraced and implemented despite the vast and fantastic contribution it could impact on the socio, economic, and political development of the nation. This study will assist the Government of Nigeria to make a move in developing strategic plans on replacing the local manufacturing process to the advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) to strengthen the economy of the nation further.

With growing climate change concerns, and constant advancements in smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithms (STARA), organisations in emerging economies are becoming more compelled to go green, develop and deploy their STARA capability to boost profits more effectively, and their environmental sustainability (ES). Likewise, with governments increasingly calling for ES, organisations' human resource management (HRM) is further pressured to ensure their programmes aid realisation of environmental objectives without compromising profit maximisation. However, it remains unclear how complementary Green HRM (GHRM) programmes can be supported by organisational STARA capability (OSC) to bolster ES. Accordingly, we investigate how OSC and GHRM programmes predict ES through a time lagged survey design with data from 461 managers of 177 manufacturing organisations in Nigeria. Results indicate that OSC positively predicts all GHRM programmes and ES but dampens the positive relationship between green training, involvement and development (GTID), and ES. Apart from green performance and compensation (GPC), which is a negative predictor, other GHRM programmes positively predict ES. While green recruitment and selection (GRS) and GTID are complementary mediators, GPC plays a competitive mediating role. Policy implications are subsequently discussed.

The material selection process for producing a horizontal axis wind turbine blade for sustainable energy generation is a vital issue when using Nigeria as a case study. Due to the challenge faced with the low wind speed variations. However, this paper focuses on implementing MCDM for the material selection process for a suitable material for developing a horizontal wind turbine blade. This paper used a quantitative research approach using AHP and TOPSIS multi-criteria decision method. The study put into consideration the environmental conditions for the material selection process when designing the questionnaire. The authors extracted the data used for the selection process from the 130 research questionnaire distributed to materials engineers and renewable energy professionals. This research considered four alternatives that is, aluminum alloy, stainless steel, glass fiber, and mild steel to determine the best material for the wind turbine blade. Also, the model has four criteria and eight sub-criteria used for developing the pair-wise matrix and the performance score used for the ranking process of the alternatives. The result shows that a consistency index of 0.056 and a consistency ratio of 0.062 gotten via the AHP method is workable for material selection practice. 78%, 43%, 67%, and 25% are the performance scores for the four alternatives via the TOPSIS techniques. In conclusion, aluminum alloy is the best material, followed by glass fibre. Therefore, the decision-makers recommended aluminum alloy; hence, manufacturers should apply aluminum alloy to develop the wind turbine blade for sustainable energy generation.

The Nutritional value of yogurt cannot be overemphasized owing to its general acceptance in the world at large. The product focus for this study is yogurt. It is a local product that is produced by a medium scale company in Ota, Ado-Odo local government area, Ogun State, Nigeria. Their production procedure conforms to the set standards for yogurt production as approved by Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in the country such as milk standardization, homogenization, pasteurization, fermentation, cooling, homogenization or smoothing, filling and storage. This research work was carried out for 90 days to study the production process of the xx yogurt, marketing strategy and the likely challenging face by the company. The system runs a very lager line plant layout, and carried out regular preventive maintenance to keep the plant running year-round in a bid to avoid unnecessary additional cost of operation owing to system breakdown as an inevitable eventuality that results from ill-maintenance practices. Their major market is within the Ota metropolis which is actually a great limitation on product visibility and patronage by more end-users. This evaluation study shows that yogurt production process can be stable and more profitable if better marketing strategy and good infrastructures facility can be employed for the production process.

This research focused on the modification of a queuing system in a workshop practice that repairs crankshafts using multi priority strategy. The random distribution of the inter arrival time of the crankshafts as well as the service time were statistically determined using Chi square goodness of fit test. The results obtained show that all the classes conform to Poisson distribution. For the non-preemptive priority, the mean waiting time in queue results for the first, second and third classes are 0.066, 0.09 and 0.224 day, respectively, while for the preemptive priority the three classes show 0.007, 0.036 and 0.258. Besides, the mean waiting time in queue for no priority system is 0.17 day. Arrivals that are of higher priority classes in preemptive priority systems enjoy huge improvement when compared with non-preemptive system. On the other hand, the improvement gained in higher priority classes has detrimental effect on the low priority class. Similar scenario plays out when the results of the mean waiting time in the system was analyzed. It is therefore advocated that priority strategy should be adopted for a system that may have urgent or semi-urgent jobs among the pool of jobs that needs repair to avoid possible losses arising from frequent reneging or balking of such jobs.

The study focused on the role of mechanical engineers towards achieving sustainable development. Critical reviews of the problems facing the development of technology were discussed as well as the way forward. Based on the challenges of our immediate society, the level of our technology can only be improved when our teaching and curriculum is reviewed. Hence, the study suggested that our approach as mechanical engineers towards research must change from the basic research concept to applied research concept. This would not only improve the academic sector but hasten the rate at which problems are solved by the mechanical engineers in the society, thereby bringing sustainability. More so, failure of engineering component is always attributed to design. This study further suggested on the need to improve the design of engineering systems to improve its sustainability while in service. The impact of the developed product must be felt in terms of green technology.

Faculties in higher institutions will typically be engaged in teaching, research or both. Teachers and researchers are very important in the university. The former ensures adequate transfer of knowledge, inspiration and mentorship to the students and to a large extent eventually determines the quality of their contributions upon graduation. The latter has always been the fulcrum for technological advancement in the society. Though individual preferences play a role in the “wing” each academic “play” in the institution, the institution’s culture has been noted to be a significant determinant. In addition, it has been noted that some scholars tend to focus more on research because it presents attractive incentive from the institution. When this is the case, some faculties that would ordinarily would love to focus on teaching will delve into and spend significant time in research for potential economic gains and often at the detriment of teaching. This work suggests universities should make conscious efforts to shrink the margin between the academic and researcher so as to always satisfy the mission of the universities and meet societal and industry expectations. When the culture in the university supports individual passions, everybody wins.

Engineering projects are generally designed to solve societal problems, develop a community and/or to improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries. But sometimes there are hidden unintended consequences of projects on human life and the ecosystems. The society also affects implementation of projects. These impacts could be positive or negative. Similarly, the approach to managing engineering projects affects the extent to which project development process impact the workers, the community, the society and the ecosystems. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the potential lifecycle impacts of engineering project management process on workers, clients/consumers, the community and the society at large. The model is based on UNEP/SETAC guidelines on social lifecycle impact assessments. The analytical model is expected to be found helpful by project managers in identifying potential impacts of their projects on various categories of people, communities and the society. The findings will enable them to reinforce positive impacts and to eliminate or minimize negative impacts. Incorporation of a social lifecycle impact assessment in project management is expected to improve the overall value of the project, especially from the social sustainability point of view.

This paper presents a brief overview of solar thermal power generation technologies (parabolic trough, central tower receiver, linear Fresnel reflecting and parabolic dish concentrators) and their possible application in Nigeria. It further discusses an array of barriers to the development of the technologies, such as the lack of understanding of solar thermal systems, lack of incentives for renewable technologies and previous experience of solar photovoltaic systems failure that is making people doubt the viability of renewable electricity. Other barriers that were considered are lack of technical expertise, high technology cost and lack of project funding, including a lack of enabling policies to drive the technologies. This study then develops a policy framework that will help to understand and address some of the identified challenges to achieve widespread adoption, application, and diffusion in Nigeria. In addition, the framework will provide useful insights into the major issues that affect community-based or regional solar thermal power systems in developing countries.

With manufacturers seeking investment opportunities in Africa, it is timely to explore the interaction of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) and human resource management approaches there. Because research elsewhere suggests that the effects of the interaction differ across national boundaries, we investigated empowerment approaches and AMT utilisation in Nigeria and New Zealand. Using operational-level survey data from 153 manufacturing managers/CEOs in both countries, we explored the role of national culture on managerial attitudes towards employee empowerment during AMT adoption. Drawing on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, our results suggest that the observed differences in AMT–empowerment interface are attributable to different national values. The results specifically indicated that during AMT adoption, New Zealand’s liberal culture encourages managers to empower employees more than does Nigeria’s authoritarian one. The results would particularly assist practitioners to recognise the traditional/conservative nature of African values when practicing HR in a country like Nigeria.
