Experiments and demonstrations (E&Ds) have always been a very special part of the EMC and Signal Integrity/Power Integrity (EMC+SIPI) symposia - and for a good reason. Within the broad range of technical presentations, workshops and tutorials, practical demonstrations deliver the unique opportunity to experience the variety of hands-on hardware and software applications, performed by EMC experts right there, right then. Witnessing the actual execution of an experiment from the first row provides a different type of learning quality expanding its fundamental understanding, teaching new tricks or solutions, or even for the sake of inspiration - after all, who doesn't enjoy seeing their favorite EMC concept being implemented in action?

A method of determining the physical integrity of Ethernet cables by obtaining their transmission line parameters (resistance, inductance, capacitance, and conductance) from their measured impedance profiles are presented. The study of the physical integrity of Ethernet cables is very important because, in typical installations, cables can be manipulated in the form of repeated coiling and uncoiling. The installation handling stress can adversely affect the signal integrity especially if they are substandard Ethernet cables. In this paper, four Ethernet cables were subjected to three coiling and uncoiling tests to represent installation handling stress. The impedance profiles of the four cables across their lengths were measured for the three handling stress test conducted. The computation of the transmission line parameters of the Ethernet cables using measured impedance profiles was implemented with the aid of Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB). The outcome of the research showed that the method presented will be very useful to cable installers and contractors in making objective decisions in the choice of cables for deployment.

Chemical and visual characterisation of EGRIP glacial ice and cloudy bands within

Impurities in polar ice play a critical role in ice flow, deformation, and the integrity of the ice core record. Especially cloudy bands, visible layers with high impurity concentrations are prominent features in ice from the last glacial. Their physical and chemical properties are poorly understood, highlighting the need to analyse them in more detail. We bridge the gap between decimetre and ... [Show full abstract] micrometre scales by combining the visual stratigraphy line scanner, fabric analyser, microstructure mapping, Raman spectroscopy, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry 2D impurity imaging. We classified almost 1300 cloudy bands from glacial ice from the East Greenland Ice-core Project (EGRIP) ice core into seven different types. We determine the localisation and mineralogy of more than 1000 micro-inclusions at 13 depths. The majority of the found minerals are related to terrestrial dust, such as quartz, feldspar, mica, and hematite. We further found carbonaceous particles, dolomite, and gypsum in high abundance. Rare minerals are e.g., rutile, anatase, epidote, titanite, and grossular. 2D impurity imaging with 20 μm resolution revealed that Na, Mg and Sr are mainly at grain boundaries. Dust-related analytes, such as Al, Fe, and Ti, are also located in the grain interior forming clusters of insoluble impurities. Cloudy bands are thus clearly distinguishable in the chemical data. We present novel vast micron-resolution insights into cloudy bands and describe the differences within and outside these bands. Combining the visual and chemical data results in new insights into the formation of different cloudy band types and could be the starting point for future in-depth studies on impurity signal integrity and internal deformation.

Hierarchical Automatic Power Plane Generation with Genetic Optimization and Multilayer Perceptron

[Show full abstract] generation approach is based on genetic optimization combined with a multilayer perceptron and is able to automatically generate power planes across a diverse set of problems with varying levels of difficulty. Our method GOMLP consists of an outer loop genetic optimizer (GO) and an inner loop multi-layer perceptron (MLP) that generate power planes automatically. The critical elements of our approach include contour detection, feature expansion, and a distance measure to enable island-minimizing complex power plane generation. We compare our approach to a baseline solution based on A*. The A* method consisting of a sequential island generation and merging process which can produce less than ideal solutions. Our experimental results show that on single layer power plane problems, our method outperforms A* in 71% of the problems with varying levels of board layout difficulty. We further describe H-GOMLP, which extends GOMLP to multilayer power plane problems using hierarchical clustering and net similarities based on the Hausdorff distance.

[Show full abstract] under different noise conditions and the feasibility of ANC in noisy environments was investigated. Steady (pink noise) and non-steady noise (cafeteria babble noise) were used to simulate noisy environments. We compared the integrity of pure-tone signals obtained from three different ANC headphone models after processing under different noise scenarios and analyzed the degree of ANC signal correlation based on the Pearson correlation coefficient compared to pure-tone signals in quiet. The objective signal correlation results were compared with audiometric screening results to confirm the correspondence. Results revealed that ANC helped mitigate the effects of environmental noise on the measured signal and the combined ANC headset model retained the highest signal integrity. The degree of signal correlation was used as a confidence indicator for the accuracy of hearing screening in noise results. It was found that the ANC technique can be further improved for more complex noisy environments.
