Dissertation Overview:
25 parents – 21 mothers 4 fathers contributed
Majority single mothers, (3 couples represented, 3
single fathers, 19 mothers)
13 cases were ‘private law’, 9 cases ‘public law’, 3
cases were neither.
Trauma Scale used on all parents
Domestic Abuse sole factor in Private Law
12 cases were Domestic Abuse towards the mother,
1 case was towards the father. The child was in the
care of 10 mothers, 2 fathers had separated the
children from the mother.
‘Public Law’ – where LA had responsibility of the child,
DA was not a primary issue (2 cases included, 2 cases
borderline, others not mentioned)
Chilling accounts of separation by Social workers
2 cases involved pre-birth decisions to remove/1 shortly
after birth
1 Couple with disabilities – 7 children removed, 1 mother
borderline learning difficulties, 3 children removed
2 couples the child had learning disabilities (1 severe/1
minor)
1 mother was grieving
1 father was accused of criminal activity (cleared in
court) and denied access to his children

around the me there was a psychological assessment as well, which was held in an
oce, at a solicitor's oce and, I really feel quite inmidated in that kind of
environment. I think I was in the psychological assessment in a solicitors oce. So to
me, quite inmidang, because it was so obvious, it was just so linked to the court.
And the court, which is so linked to my child being taken which is like, it was just like
it felt like is a false environment, like you're never going to get, you're never going to
get like a real assessment of someone when you are basically holding a gun to their
head saying we might take your child, that's what it feels like, it feels like, it just
seems so ridiculous that any human being could think that you're going to get a
good assessment of someone in that predicament...
