The development of technology and the communication industry has caused drastic changes in the media industry, especially print media. A great number of newspapers and magazines stopped printing because it was difficult to compete with online media. Therefore, the term “news desert” appears to refer to a community or area that is not covered by newspapers due to the declining population of local newspapers in various regions. The community or region seems to have disappeared from the public eye. Important issues, problems, and aspirations of residents in the region are no longer heard and their existence seems to be no longer essential. This is certainly troubling, especially regarding the function of the media as the fourth estate in democracy. However, in various regions, online alternative media are now emerging that only focus on local issues, especially issues that are not or rarely touched by mainstream media. This study aims to find out how online alternative media try to overcome the phenomenon of news desert in Indonesia. The research was conducted by case study approach with two sources of information for data collection. The first one is manual observation on two online alternative media Bandung Bergerak and Bale Bengong and the second one is interviews with the Editor-in-Chief of the two media. Based on this research, several results were obtained, 1) alternative media report news about local communities that are rarely presented in the mainstream media and causing news desert, 2) an in-depth data-based journalism approach and citizen journalism in alternative media are capable of uniting local communities and communities, 3) news that does not rely on clickbait or the latest updates in online alternative media can be enjoyed without expiration, and 4) the proximity of online alternative media to the society is one of the leading strategies for overcoming the news desert.
... Through this concept, it is possible to consider the broader consequences from local news' low quality, in addition to their scarcity or complete absence. Local media gaps affect communities in China (Gulyas and Baines, 2020), Ukraine, Kazakhstan (Dovbysh and Lehtisaari, 2020) and certainly in many other parts of the world. ...
This article suggests that the adoption of hybrid business models coupled with the establishment of an ethical advertising platform could help counter the emergence of news deserts. The latter are geographic areas and policy issues lacking coverage because of the crisis of the commercial model of news provision. Three clusters of characteristics are used to streamline and compare business models: (1) revenue models, (2) patrons and their motives, and (3) legal frameworks for the incorporation of the organization. Hybrid business models are designed by mixing the principles underpinning the Benefit Corporation or the Low-profit Limited Liability Company (L3C), with the basic characteristics of commercial and non-profit news organizations. The term ethical advertising refers to promotional activities that non-profits and other organizations dedicated to social goals normally undertake, including marketing, fundraising, or public-awareness campaigns. Based on data published by the Internal Revenue Services, this article argues that a digital platform for ethical advertising could face a demand worth over $1 billion a year. Additionally, this platform could effectively match non-profits’ demand for an audience with a pro-social attitude with non-profit and hybrid news organizations’ need for additional revenue streams.
This study delves into the narratives employed by Belarusian propaganda during the Russo-Ukrainian War, examining 1,750 news items from Belarusian state media sources and the pro-government Telegram channels from September 1 st to November 30 th , 2022. The research employs the Looqme methodology, a robust content analysis approach that involves systematically coding and categorizing textual data to identify key thematic blocks and subthemes. The findings reveal a carefully crafted narrative aimed at demonizing Ukraine, promoting alternative realities, and glorifying military service. By portraying the West as a source of instability and danger, the propaganda fosters public support for Belarus's stance on the conflict. Additionally, the study exposes the use of historical manipulation and reinforcement of negative portrayals through quoting Russian authorities. The study highlights the role of language manipulation and selective presentation of events in shaping public opinion, providing valuable insights for countering disinformation and fostering objective reporting in times of conflict.
Is Covid-19 undermining European democracies? Recent scholarship overlooks the fact that most pandemic-related erosions of democracy can be attributed to illiberal inertia long in place before 2019. Did the democratic decay occur during the pandemic or due to the pandemic? We analyse the extent to which pandemic power grabs succeeded and failed in Europe with special attention to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. The executive power of the purse was an opportunity to abuse state resources. Governments that engage in the “pandemic heist” with impunity can be directly linked to a power grab due to the pandemic.
