Jewish languages contain a component derived from Hebrew and Aramaic, the earliest languages Jews used. We offer a historical comparative analysis of the structure and use of adjectives of Hebrew and Aramaic origin in the diverse spoken and written registers of Judezmo (Ladino, Judeo-Spanish) and Yiddish, the two major Jewish languages of the Sephardim and Ashkenazim of Europe. Attention is paid both to adjectives whose forms are entirely of Hebrew or Aramaic origin, as well as those constructed of bases of Hebrew and Aramaic origin, and derivational morphemes of Hispanic and Turkish origin (Judezmo), and Germanic and Slavic origin (Yiddish). The incorporation of the adjectives within the syntactic and semantic systems of Judezmo and Yiddish is examined, and comparisons made between the relative quantity and function of the adjectives in the two languages. It is meant as a model for the comparative study of the linguistic structures of Jewish languages.
Résumé
En raison de la nature composite du yiddish et de son histoire singulière, les philologues ont longtemps éprouvé quelques difficultés à intégrer les études yiddish dans un champ de recherche constitué. Selon quels modèles théoriques convenait-il de décrire cette langue ? Pour certains, le yiddish est perçu dans ses relations aux dialectes germaniques, alors que, pour d’autres, il doit être relié à la linguistique des langues juives. L’histoire de la dialectologie du yiddish reste un bon exemple de la manière dont les études yiddish, certes grâce à de constants emprunts méthodologiques ou transferts théoriques, se sont constituées en tant que domaine autonome. L’œuvre de Max et d’Uriel Weinreich, autour du Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry, demeure le point d’aboutissement de décennies de recherche sur les dialectes du yiddish. Cet article vise à reconstituer le cheminement de cette discipline, depuis les balbutiements au xixe siècle jusqu’aux ouvrages récents qui constituent autant de contributions originales à la linguistique.
Wegen der Kompositstruktur der jiddischen Sprache und ihrer eigentümlichen Geschichte haben die Philologen einige Schwierigkeiten gehabt, die jiddischen Studien in ein bereits gebildetes Forschungsfeld einzufügen. Nach welchen theoretischen Modellen sollte diese Sprache beschrieben werden ? Manche erfassen das Jiddische in seinen Beziehungen zu den deutschen Dialekten, andere meinen, es müsse mit der Linguistik der jüdischen Sprachen verbunden werden. Die Geschichte der Dialektologie des Jiddischen bietet ein gutes Beispiel für die Art, wie die jiddischen Studien sich, gewiß anhand von ständigen methodologischen Entlehnungen und theoretischen Transfers, als autonomer Bereich konstituiert haben. Die Werke von Max und Uriel Weinreich im Umfeld des Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry bilden den Höhepunkt von jahrzehntelanger Forschung über die jiddischen Dialekte. In diesem Artikel wird die Entwicklung dieser Disziplin nachgezeichnet, von den Anfängen im 19. Jahrhundert bis zu den jüngsten Arbeiten, die eigenständige Beiträge zur Linguistik sind.
Due to the composite structure of Yiddish and the uniqueness of his history, the philologists stress the difficulty to integrate the Yiddish studies in a specific field of research. Which theoretical models must be used to describe this language? For some linguists, Yiddish must be analysed in relation to the Germanic dialects. For others, Yiddish must be related to the linguistics of Jewish languages. The history of the dialectology of Yiddish is a good example to understand how Yiddish studies have been constituted as a field of research, using constant methodological borrowings or theoretical transfers. The works of Max and Uriel Weinreich, around the Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry, are the summit of decades of research on Yiddish dialects. In this article, we reconstitute the development of this field, from the beginnings in the 19th century to recent works which constitute original contributions to linguistics.
