Abstract

Nowadays climate change is a critical issue everywhere, this study focused on the impact of local climate of Iraq which specially refers to design of Abbasid palaces location plans as well as Abbasid palaces characteristics and location. The study has been conducted mostly of Qasr Al-Jawsaq Al-Khakani, Balaklora Palace and Al-Jaafari Palace, the case study has been conducted considering the one palace along with site environment relation. In this research Descriptive analytical method focused mostly, in that study described Abbasid palace and then analyze the impact of the local climate on its design by taking vertical sections in open spaces to study the impact of wind and sun movement on the openings in the palace, with a simplified definition of each palace and applying the principle to the plan of one of Abbasid palaces. The research identified many climate elements including the location of the Palace, sun angle and local wind the elements of palace design like the courtyard, Ewan, and gates of the Palace. A questionnaire was prepared and distributed to a number of specialists in the field of architecture and the results of the answers were graphically analyzed to see the impact of local environment elements on the shortcomings to obtain the results..

Nowadays, public and private organizations have demonstrated some sensibility in maintenance and security updates of their equipment. However, their main focus are servers and workstations, leaving network devices, such as routers and switches often forgotten in this process. This research addresses the vulnerabilities on network equipment, intending to evaluate their dimension, in Portugal’s City Halls and, after that, analyze and rate their impact according to taxonomies, such as CAPEC. This study also aims to set of vulnerabilities to reply, elucidate and sensitize not just City Halls ITs, but also other type of public and private organizations about the risks related to outdate network devices. The vulnerability demonstrations were done through the design of different scenarios, with real devices, installed in a mobile rack, called “Hack Móvel” and using network simulators. Each scenario was documented with multimedia contents, allowing teaching hacking techniques in network devices. As methodology, the study adopts the quantitative method, through the application of questionnaires applied to each City Hall, in order to collect relevant information about the device models and brands, as well as the firmware version they are really using. It is also adopted the quantitative method in order to perform tests with real users and evaluate the scenarios that were designed. Results show a really good acceptance of the “Hack Móvel” by users and their motivation to increase their knowledge on the computer security and hacking techniques field.

This research addresses the phases of buildings development, focusing on heritage buildings and their possible transformation or adaptation into smart buildings, environmental friendly and, at the same time, keeping their heritage features and values. Adopting a methodological framework in order to collect and analyze the past, present and future of buildings, the research aims to evaluate the possibility of turning heritage buildings into more "green" and sustainable ones, guiding the research into a comparison of construction materials, traditional and futuristic design features, as well as the environmental impact of each era and energy sources. The study also aims to find the linkamong the past, present and future in order to better understand the sustainable ancient techniques and compare them to the modern ones, allowing not just to find their possible use in modern designs, but also to better identify the necessities in turning heritage building into a smart one. Some of the found examples show the viability of such transformation and the general satisfaction of their users, providing not just a better energy consumption but also helping on the environmental preservation.

This research addresses the smart buildings and their inside and outside environment and technology types. The aim of this study is to understand the main actors responsible for such buildings and houses and environmental impact as well as their main characteristics, which we call "smart" features. Directly related to advanced technology, this paper aims also to describe their use and types, not just in a global way, but also in light technical approach, identifying components and elements present in a home automation system and how user interacts with it in a way that normal people, without technical knowledge can understand.

This paper discusses about traditional Kurdish houses in the City of Erbil, Iraq., which requires an essential understanding the general characteristics of traditional houses of Kurdish and their cultural properties. The background of historical is important as it partly contributes to the significance of the heritage of Erbil City. Cultural property or natural property, is an invaluable and fragile treasure that cannot be replaced once it is gone. The lost of cultural heritage will led to the lost of heritage not only to the country, but also to the community.(I. Sumarni , 2014)

The Arab District is located in the Erbil City, near to the well-known Erbil Citadel, and its considered one of the most important districts of Erbil. Although its importance, it is not easy to find good information sources about the growth of this district, being most of the information known by visitor's pictures, which were painted or taken while visiting the place, or by interviewing the local people. This paper addresses this district, focusing essentially on the population and their houses, identifying not just the community, which was formed by Muslims and Christians, but also the houses topology and types. Using the statistical study ("census") of Arab District, it is also possible to understand how the population increased and decreased through the years, being 1975 in the year of 2015. Besides the population analysis, it is also enumerated some of the district characteristics, like weakness and opportunities, ending with a descriptive and interpretative approach in a way to outline the government decisions.

Erbil is the capital of the Autonomous Region of the Kurdistan within the Federal Republic of Iraq and, according to the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), it’s considered the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, with around 6000 of age, presenting, although its quick expansion, a relatively compact form when compared to other cities of similar size in Europe and North America. This paper addresses the issue of this unusual compact form, highlighting the history of Erbil city and how it grew around the Citadel present in its nucleus. A descriptive and interpretative approach is adopted to outline the irregular oval shape of the Erbil Citadel and its archaeological heritage, focusing also the need to preserve its facades and interior buildings and the master plans already designed which may change the actual city form and the way people live in it.
