Hierodula transcaucasica Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 (Mantodea: Mantidae), a large mantis with a
mainly Asiatic distribution, is an invasive species currently spreading in the eastern part of the
Mediterranean Region, particularly on the Balkan Peninsula and on islands of the Aegean Sea
(Romanowski et al., 2019; van der Heyden & Schwarz, 2021).
Recently, H. transcaucasica was detected in Slovenia and Spain:
On 27.08.2021, a nymph was photographed in Ljubljana by Alenka Bogovič (Fig. 1a). The
photo was uploaded to the online database iNaturalist (under the pseudonym lenca)
(see here). The specimen was found in a garden in the center of Ljubljana while resting
on a stalk of Asparagus sp. (Asparagaceae) (Alenka Bogovič, pers. comm.).
On 07.09.2021, an adult specimen of H. transcaucasica was observed and photographed in
Madrid, in the district Alameda de Osuna, by Sergio pez Castelo (Fig. 1b). Various
photos of the specimen were uploaded to the online database iNaturalist (under the
pseudonym sergiolc_2077--el_avistador) (see here).
Both findings reported here were made in urban areas, which is in concordance with most
records in other parts of the recently colonized area, as stated by van der Heyden & Schwarz (2021).
Apparently, H. transcaucasica is currently increasing its European distribution area in two
directions: from the Balkan Peninsula northward and from the north of the Mediterranean Basin
westward. So far, the record from Madrid is the westernmost one of H. transcaucasica in Europe.
Acknowledgements
I like to thank Alenka Bogovič and Sergio López Castelo for allowing me to use their photos of H.
transcaucasica to illustrate this note and for additional information.

Many alien species directly affect humans by damaging agricultural crops and threatening the health of humans and domestic animals. Today, with the widespread use of social media, posts made by citizen scientists provide valuable data about alien species very quickly. This study reveals the importance of online databases for our knowledge on the spread of the Giant Asian Mantes Hierodula tenuidentata and H. patellifera. The data provided by citizen scientists through social media such as iNaturalist, Observation.org, and Alciphron (the latter only for Serbia) provide comprehensive baseline data for monitoring the distribution of these alien species. While 16% of the records of these species were obtained from the literature, 84% consisted of data from social media and personal observations. Our study supports the findings of previous studies stating that citizen scientists make important contributions in monitoring alien species and providing data for early prevention.

Data from France on the distribution of three alien species of Mantodea (Hierodula tenuidentata/transcaucasica, Hierodula patellifera and Sphodromantis viridis) are presented here; 160 exogenous Mantodea data were recorded. Hierodula patellifera was the first species to be recorded in France in 2013. Populations of the two Hierodula species overlap in two departments of southern France, Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse. New data on behaviour are provided.

The genus Hierodula Burmeister, 1838 is reported for the first time in Piedmont. Data come from the citizen science project iNaturalist. The quality of the photographs made it possible to determine the mantis genus and in some cases the species, Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869. With this contribution, the genus Hierodula, alien mantids in Italy, extends its known range and reaches the most north-western point of the Italian Peninsula.

In the last few years, the allochthonous mantid species, Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869 has spread vigorously across Europe. To date, the species has been recorded in many countries in the southern and eastern parts of the continent, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Moldova, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Ukraine. On October 22, 2022, in Szeged, a city in the southern part of Hungary, one ochre-colored female specimen of H. tenuidentata was found. The finding presented in this article is the first recording of this species in Hungary and indicates the further spread of the species towards Central Europe. We also present a few new records of this species from Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. We discuss the spread of H. tenuidentata in the Pannonian Plain, as well as the potential importance of climate change and the heat island effect in population establishment in this part of Europe. Posljednjih se nekoliko godina alohtona vrsta bogomoljke Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869 intenzivno širi po Europi. Do danas je vrsta zabilježena u mnogim zemljama južnog dijela kontinenta, odnosno u Albaniji, Bosni i Hercegovini, Bugarskoj, Hrvatskoj, Grčkoj, Italiji, Moldaviji, Sjevernoj Makedoniji, Rumunjskoj, Srbiji, Sloveniji, Španjolskoj i Ukrajini. Raspravili smo širenje vrste H. tenuidentata u Panonskoj nizini, kao i o potencijalnom značaju klimatskih promjena i učinka toplinskih otoka u uspostavljanju populacije u ovom dijelu Europe.

During a brief visit of Alonnisos Island in 2022 some insect species (mainly butterflies) were observed and photographed. Three of them are new for the island’s fauna - the giant Asian mantis Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869, western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, 1910, millet skipper Pelopidas thrax (Hübner, [1821]). Their establishment on the island is not a surprise, but it well illustrates the expansion of these species in the Mediterranean area. A list of the observed butterflies is also provided.

In this paper the first record of the alien mantis species Hierodula tenuidentata for Bosnia and Herzegovina is provided. This large mantis has considerably expanded its distribution range in Europe in the last years, particularly in Balkan Peninsula. We found several adult specimens on 22nd and 23rd of August 2021 in urban area of Mostar city in the south of the country. This finding confirms the species’ establishment in the western part of Balkan Peninsula and fills the distribution gap along the eastern Adriatic Sea coast.

The cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera Hübner) is a major polyphagous pest of corn, tobacco, cotton, chickpeas, and tomatoes. Damage is caused by caterpillars that feed on the vegetative and generative parts of host plants. The damage in the world is estimated at two billion dollars per year. It is widespread in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe and Australia. It is a migratory species and can travel greater distances. In our area it has 2-3 generations per year, in tropical conditions it can develop up to 11 generations per year. The occurrence of the cotton bollworm is favored by high temperatures during the spring and summer and higher rainfall in spring. As temperatures increase, the time required for the entire life cycle decreases. Considering that the average daily temperature is expected to increase by 3°C by the end of the next century, an increase in the number of generations and the harmfulness of H. armigera can be expected. In the absence ofcontrol measures, monitoring the biology and migratory movements of H. armigera is important to assess the risk of invasion into a new area or crop.

The Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula tenuidentata) is reported for the first time in the Veneto region and the survival of adult individuals in Northern Italy till winter is confirmed. Despite the already well documented ability of this alien species to survive the harsh winters of Northern Italy, new data on its ecology in these areas allows one to better understand the potential of this species to spread in Europe. This species was able to remain viable in persistent minimum temperatures below 0°C and with extremes of -5 °C. The current distribution dynamics suggest Veneto as a possible meeting point between the westward expanding Balkan populations and those of the lower Po Valley already known for some years.

Three years ago, a finding of a mantis on the Greek island of Crete was reported and discussed in this journal. At that time, the species was not identified without any doubt. Actually, the specimen was a female of Hierodula transcaucasica Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878. Recent data on the presence of this species on Crete are presented, including a distribution map. The nomenclatural issue concerning the taxonomic identity of this species is discussed.

Hierodula transcaucasica Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 is a mantid native to the Caucasus and southern and western Asia. Here we present the first records of the species for the Balkans represented by findings of the species in Northern Greece in two localities (Thasos in 2015 and Charopo in 2017) and in Bulgaria in 2017. These recent findings implicate the potential of the species to colonize larger area of the Balkan Peninsula. The adaptability of H. transcaucasica to different environments and ecological corridors may facilitate the spread of this species in the Balkans and other Euro-Mediterranean countries. The key to the species of the subfamily Mantinae of the Mediterranean Basin is provided.
