Chemotaxonomic implications of the venom chemistry of some Monomorium “antarcticum” populations

A comparative analysis of the venom alkaloids produced by ants in the genusMonomorium (= Chelaner) collected on North Island and South Island, New Zealand, has been undertaken. Eight species of ants belonging to 7 genera of 3 subfamilies are recorded from the island of Minami-iwo-to, the Volcano Islands, Japan. Among them, Temnothorax mekira and Camponotus iwoensis are described as new to science, and 4 species, Hypoponera nippona, H. bondoroiti, Monomorium chinensis and Paratrechina amia, are recorded from this island for the frst time.

Six species of ants were collected from Aguni-jima Island, the Ryukyus, Japan. Five species are newly recorded from the island, including the fourth record of female of Probolomyrmex okinawensis Terayama & Ogata, 1988 in Japan. In addition, checklist of ants on the island is provided for the first time.
