Online Learning Experience during Covid-19 Pandemic: An Online Survey among Malaysian Polytechnic Students

Various stages of Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia affected the way of learning in institutions of higher education that online learning has become compulsory in most cases. One of the main issues of implementing online learning is the students’ readiness. This study aims to investigate students’ opinions on their online learning experience and challenges faced on online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic, and their preferred way of learning between online and face-to-face classes. An online study, using Google Form, was carried out and there were altogether 63 polytechnic students volunteered to answer the survey. The results show that the students are generally satisfied with their online learning experience and claiming that the experience to be good, with preference on live lessons. The main challenges faced by students are difficulty to focus due to distractions from surroundings and difficulty to understand the content of the course. It was also found that more students preferred face-to-face classes than online classes.

Abstract

Introduction
In his remark on 11 March 2020, the Director-General of World Health Organisation
characterised the then fast-spreading Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) as the first-ever
coronavirus that caused a pandemic (Ghebreyesus, 2020). In Malaysia specifically, the
government executed Movement Control Order (MCO) as a result of a sharp rise in the number
of confirmed Covid-10 cases in the country starting from 18 March 2020 (Prime Minister’s
Office of Malaysia, 2020). Since then, various stages of MCOs have been implemented in
Malaysia and they unavoidably affected the way of learning in institutions of higher education
(Chung, Noor & Mathew, 2020).
Due to the restrictions of movement enforced across the nation, in May 2020, Ministry
of Higher Education Malaysia (MoHE) instructed all institutions of higher education to
implement online learning except for a few categories of students that have to be physically
present at campus (MoHE, 2020). When most of the lecturers and students have to follow the
ministry’s instruction, the main issue is the readiness of the students for online learning (Allam,
Hassan, Mohideen, Ramlan & Kamal, 2020; Anwar, Omar, Isa & Shamsudin, 2020; Chung et
al., 2020; Yusuf & Ahmad, 2020).
After the implementation of online learning in Malaysian institutions of higher
education for several months, the researchers intend to find out, through this preliminary online
survey study, the answers to the following research questions:
i. What are the students’ opinions on their online learning experience during Covid-19
pandemic?
ii. What are the challenges faced by students on online classes during Covid-10 pandemic?
iii. What is the students’ preferred way of learning between online and face-to-face
classes?

Literature Review
As early as five years after implementing online learning in the United States of America, Allen
and Seaman (2007) made a detailed classification of online learning as shown in Table 1:

Being a part of the institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, polytechnics have been
employing the blended learning approach through its self-developed learning management
system Curriculum Online Document Information System (CIDOS) (Saharudin, Hamzah &
Rahman, 2020). Romli (2016) in her study claimed that the respondents (polytechnic
commerce diploma students) well received CIDOS for the means of blended learning.
Nevertheless, the current Covid-19 pandemic disallows face-to-face delivery and hence online
learning has to be implemented, by hook or by crook, among Malaysian polytechnics.
The implementation of online learning is not without any issues. Students’ readiness is
one of them. Anwar et al. (2020), for instance, reported that most of the 117 university students
in their study “were ready to participate actively during the online classes” (p. 39). Likewise,
a study conducted by Yusoff, Hashim & Muhamad (2020) some time before the
implementation of MCO found that a vast majority of their respondents (228 polytechnic
students) were with a high level of readiness for online learning. On the other hand, Allam et
al. (2020) discovered that their survey samples (n = 631), consisting of diploma and degree
students, were ready for online distance learning in terms of computer/internet literacy
competency, but not so for self-directed learning and motivation for learning levels.
Meanwhile, Chung, Subramaniam and Dass (2020) surveyed 399 university students in
Malaysia and found that the respondents were generally ready for online learning, but
surprisingly, “females are found to be more ready than male, [and] degree students are more
ready than diploma students…” (p. 46).
Next, quite a number of previous studies examined students’ perception on online
learning during the Covid-19 pandemic in different countries. To illustrate, Demuyakor (2020)
investigated the perceptions of Ghanaian international higher education students in China. He
found that the majority of the respondents claimed that online learning programme to be a very
good idea and they supported it. Besides that, Nambiar (2020) studied post-secondary students’
and teachers’ perspective on the impact of online learning during the pandemic. It was reported

that more than 80% of both teachers and students preferred classroom teaching method than
online classes due to various reasons. A study among Pakistan tertiary students by Adnan and
Anwar (2020) too discovered that the students were not fond of online learning due to a number
of constraints. Not only that, Unger and Meiran (2020) reported that a big number of their
students in a US university expressed “anxiety towards the sudden transition to strictly online
distance learning…” (p. 259).
Last but not least, the possible challenges faced by the students for online learning
during the Covid-19 pandemic should not be neglected. Chung et al. (2020), for instance,
disclosed that according to their respondents, the biggest challenge of online learning is internet
connectivity for degree students, and difficulty to understand the content of the subject for
diploma students. Besides, from the educators’ point of view, Yusuf and Ahmad (2020, p. 209)
observed the following major findings regarding the challenges for online learning:
i. Students were less focused on online teaching and learning;
ii. Learning platform/medium was not satisfactory;
iii. Students were without basic learning tools, such as books and laptops (which were left
behind in their residential colleges);
iv. Internet access was not satisfactory to the extent that lectures needed to be extended
from the actual lecture period;
v. Poor internet access to educators causing disruption to learning time; and
vi. Students did not attend the online lectures.
Methodology
As a preliminary work, the present study adopted the quantitative method, specifically a cross-
sectional survey study, in which “the information is collected at just at one point in time,
although the time it takes to collect all of the data may take anywhere from a day to a few
weeks or more” (Fraenkel, Wallen & Hyun, 2012, p. 394). Data were collected through the use
of Google Form containing a set of questionnaire adapted from previous studies Nambair
(2020) and Chung et al. (2020). Convenience sampling was used for this online survey as the
researchers shared the Google Form link to their polytechnic students and invited them to
answer it on a voluntary basis for a duration of a week. The results obtained from Google Form
were then transferred to IBM SPSS Statistics software to obtain mean scores and standard
deviation values for better interpretation of the data. Table 2 displays the demographic
information of the 63 respondents who volunteered to answer the questionnaire. It can be seen
that most of the respondents are female, semester 1 and from the Commerce Department.

Results and Discussions
As depicted in Table 3, while quite a number of them were undecided, more respondents were
satisfied (47.3%) with their online learning experience during Covid-19 pandemic, and almost
half of them (49.2%) felt good about the experience. Besides that, when asked about their
intention to continue using online learning, slightly more respondents (31.8%) agreed as
compared to those who disagreed (25.4%). Microsoft Teams / Zoom / Google Meet live lessons
are seen to be the most preferred online learning method (74.6%) among the respondents.

To survey the students’ opinion on the challenges faced on online learning during the
Covid-19 pandemic, eight statements were provided, and respondents were asked to rank the
statements from Rank 1 (most significant challenge) to Rank 8 (least significant challenge).
The results shown in Table 4 have been re-arranged according to the mean scores. It is
interpreted in such a way that the lower the mean score, the more significant the challenge is.
Therefore, it can be clearly seen that the biggest challenge regarding online learning among the
students is the difficulty to focus due to distractions from their surroundings, followed by
difficulty to understand the content of the course. Different online learning methods, slow
personal laptop/devices and limited broadband data are, among others, the least significant
challenges according to the respondents of the study.

Even though it was reported earlier that the respondents were rather positive about their
online leaning experience, Table 5 illustrates how more respondents would prefer face-to-face
classes than online classes. For example, Item Q6, more respondents (36.5%, M = 2.79, SD =
.986) disagreed that online classes are more effective than face-to-face mode (20.7%). The
highest percentage of agreement in this section is Item Q12 in which almost 70% of the
respondents agreed that technical issues disrupt the flow and pace of online classes. The only
item that online classes are preferred is Item Q11 about the time-saving nature of online classes
(M = 3.57, SD = .893).
Conclusion
Based on the results, it can be claimed that in overall, more students are satisfied with their
online learning experience during the Covid-19 pandemic and claiming that the experience to
be good, with preference on live online lessons. Besides that, the main challenges faced by
students are difficulty to focus due to distractions from surroundings and difficulty to
understand the content of the course. Finally, more students preferred face-to-face classes than
online classes. Therefore, it can be concluded that even though the students are satisfied with
their online learning experience, yet if given a choice, they would still prefer face-to-face
classes.
However, the researchers do note the limitations of the present study, which include
convenience sampling, and relatively smaller size of samples. Hence the findings of the study
may not be representative enough of the whole pre-determined population polytechnic
students in Malaysia. All in all, the findings may still be able to highlight some implications to
the policy makers.

In many facets of our lives, the internet has become indispensable. The internet's role in transforming education has significantly altered both teaching and learning. The ability to learn online has been made feasible by the internet. Nguyen (2015) asserted that this had piqued the curiosity of many researchers and educators who want to use it to strengthen and advance student learning. This small-scale quantitative study examined how well employing online learning works in tertiary education at a Malaysian university. A total of 20 undergraduates from various faculties took part in an online survey. The survey covered both the benefits and drawbacks of online learning. 75% of the undergraduates agreed that using online resources allowed them to take control of their own learning. The results also reveal that, despite having the opportunity to learn conveniently and flexibly through the online platform, undergraduates still consider face-to-face classes a better approach to pursuing their degrees. Using the research findings as a guide, the researchers recommend that instructors using online learning take into account the relevance of the content and solutions, student support, and interaction between students and teachers for effective learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected all the business activities throughout the world but it has changed the education landscape worldwide as well. A survey was conducted to get direct responses from Malaysian public university's students on the needs of unanticipated Open and Distance Learning (ODL) before the online classes begin. The main focus of the study is to examine the students' acceptance and readiness for online learning. Furthermore, it is to identify the challenges faced by the students as well as to recognise the best platform for lecturers to reach them. This is due to absence of students during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period and probably experiencing different internet access in their respected area. Based on the findings, most of the respondents were ready to participate actively during the online classes. The students preferred social platform such as Whatsapps as one of the medium for interacting with their lecturers. Many of the respondents suggested the use of Google Classroom application as the preferred online tool for teaching and learning. Their preferences were designed by the level of internet connectivity at their place. This study envisages to contribute towards the body of knowledge for educators to understand the needs of their students before the online classes take place and to suggest the educators on the best approach for starting off their online classes in the wake of the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

In this paper, undergraduate student attitudes towards rapidly shifting to an entirely online learning environment were assessed due to COVID-19. In addition, surveys on perceptions about misinformation in media, overall anxiety towards distance learning, knowledge of disease outbreak, and level of preparedness during the onset of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) 2020 outbreak were analyzed. Students surveyed (N = 82) consisted of Wingate undergraduate students from across majors and academic years as part of an animal behavior course covering psychology and human behavior during the COVID-19 2020 crisis during the first two weeks when students returned to school entirely online from off-campus. The majority of students responded that online learning would not be the same as in-class learning (91.5%), indicating a significant difference in responses. Many students indicated they had witnessed some misinformation on COVID-19 in media (98.8%), and there was a significant difference for student perception on being well informed from standard news media (e.g., TV, newspapers) versus social media (t-test = 3.78, p <0.001). Many students (75.6%) responded they held some level of anxiety towards rapidly shifting to finishing a semester online, with 84.2% having discussed disease transmission actively and yet only 64.6% felt well prepared for emergency situations. The majority of students felt preventative measures (university requiring students to move off campus and remainder of semester moving to online distance learning) were based on good science and medical knowledge. Of the students that freely commented in the survey, overall students displayed a wide range of responses, with most expressing anxiety toward online learning, disappointment regarding graduation ceremony, and online learning being different than standard in-class learning. A follow up survey consisting of one question, revealed improvement in students that stated they felt less anxiety towards online learning after 3 weeks (51.4% Yes: 48.6% No), but still many students exhibiting anxiety towards distance education.

Universities around the world have been directly and indirectly affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Within the span of less than one month, the traditional face-to-face learning has been replaced by online learning to ensure education continuity. This paper sets out to examine online learning readiness among university students who have been thrown in at the deep end. It aims to investigate if demographic factors make any difference in their readiness to learn, online learning experiences and intention to continue using online learning. It also examines their preferred methods of online learning and challenges they face. Data collected from 399 students in two different online learning courses in Malaysia showed that respondents are generally ready for online learning. However, females are found to be more ready than male, degree students are more ready than diploma students while female students and degree students are more satisfied with online learning and have better learning experiences compared to male and diploma students. More than half of the respondents indicated that if given a choice, they do not want to continue with online learning in the future. Most respondents preferred online learning via pre-recorded lectures uploaded to Google Classroom and YouTube. While the biggest challenge for degree students is internet connectivity, for diploma students, it is the difficulty in understanding the content of the subject. Moving forward, government, telecommunication companies and universities should invest in developing internet infrastructure across the country as online learning will be the new norm in the foreseeable future. University also needs to provide further training to enhance academics’ online teaching skills to ensure lessons are delivered more effectively

The purpose of this study was to conduct an online survey regarding teacher's and student's perception and experience related to online classes. Delivery of classes through online medium has been a recent modification brought out by the education system in India in the wake of the current pandemic situation. Thus, this survey describes college and university teachers and students' perceptions and concerns with regard to taking online classes that have been made mandatory in the wake of COVID19. The sample consisted of 70 teachers and 407 students from colleges and universities in Bangalore city. Online survey method was used for the purpose of data collection. The findings show that the following areas are important for teacher and student satisfaction with online classes, these areas are: quality and timely interaction between student and professor, technical support availability, structured online class modules, and modifications to accommodate conduction of practical classes.

This study was conducted with the purpose to identify the level of readiness and needs of the students towards the development of a mobile portal which applied problem-based learning for the Islamic Studies course in polytechnics. This study had implemented the method of survey and quantitative in nature. The number of 228 students who were enrolling the Islamic Studies course from five Malaysia polytechnics in the North Zone were selected randomly as sample. A set of questionnaires was used as research instrument. The data obtained were analysed descriptively using frequency, percentage and mean score in order to identify the level of readiness and needs of the students. The study found that students’ readiness level is very good, with 100% of the respondents owned mobile devices and 93.5% out of total respondents had experience in using the mobile devices for more than 3 years. The level of skill in using the mobile device also was good as all items had reached high level of mean score (3.82 – 4.14). Another criteria of readiness obtained from the data was students’ readiness towards problem-based learning strategy which all items had reached high level of mean score (3.94 – 4.20). Overall, the finding of this research showed that the level of students’ needs was high towards the development of this module as an effort to create an alternative pathway for the pedagogy of Islamic Studies.

In Malaysia, the COVID-19 outbreak reported day-by-day positive carrier statistic increasing that force government action to impose movement control order (MCO); Malaysian stay at home to stop the virus from spreading fast. The MCO affects the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies undergraduate students who are just starting a new semester in the week fourth to stay at home while learning activities continue using Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The implications of online learning are the concern of university as a teaching method that is expected to improve students’ academic performance by enhancing computer/Internet literacy competency (CIL), selfdirected learning (SDL), and motivation for learning (MOL) level. Does during the COVID-19 outbreak that spark anxiety and panic are suits for ODL activities? A survey conducted (n= 631) among undergraduate students to measure the level of ODL readiness. By using descriptive statistical analysis, this study found that CIL among undergraduate students is at a high level, while SDL and MOL reported at a low level. This study suggests the ARP initiative taken by the lecturer. The ARP refers to attention, recognition, and pressure less. The ODL seems new norms that should not hinder potential interactive learning for best academic performance and to drive excellent achievement. This study highly contributes a new idea to the lecturer, faculty management, the university and HEI as the best practice of ODL in the future.

The first quarter of 2020 is a hard time for the global community. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemics swept through the world affected many aspects of human endeavour: from the decline in industrial production to the re-adjustments in the academic calendar of all educational institutions globally. Stakeholders and management of higher educational institutions have no other option but to make use of internet technology, thus online learning for the continuation of academic activities across all schools worldwide. This paper aims at assessing whether Ghanaian international students in China are satisfied with the ‘‘ mass’’ online learning in higher educational institutions in Beijing, China. Therefore, this study employed an online survey to investigate the level of satisfaction of online learning in higher educational institutions and how Ghanaian international students are coping with these ‘‘new initiatives’’. The findings from the study suggest that the implementation of online learning programs was a very great idea as the majority of the sampled students supported the initiative. The study also revealed that students have adequate knowledge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Another finding that came up during the research is the high cost of participating in online learning. However, our results showed that students outside China due to the COVID-19 spend so much money to buy internet data for online learning. Last but not least, the study discovered that internet connectivity was very slow for students leaving within the dormitories of various universities in China. The findings from this study will be of much benefit to university administrators and management in taking future emergency decisions concerning the implementation of online learning programs for student’s different backgrounds.

Online learning is a learning methodology implemented during the recent COVID-19 outbreaks. Lecturers and students need to use appropriate online platforms arising from the Movement Control Order (MCO) restrictions with effect from March 18, 2020, in Malaysia. In essence, the MCO prohibits Malaysians from attending to or organizing mass events or public gatherings, and where public and private educational institutions are concerned, they are not allowed to conduct any classes in situ. The only possible continuation of classes is via online learning. This case study had two research objectives: 1) What were the challenges faced by educators when implementing online learning? and 2) How to overcome these challenges faced by educators in online learning? This study had applied the qualitative approach method, where researchers had distributed surveys, through a google platform, to a total of 20 educators. The results showed six (6) major challenges faced by educators in online learning, these being 1) students were less focused on online learning; 2) the platform/medium of learning was not satisfactory; 3) students left behind learning tools such as books and laptops in residential colleges; 4) students' internet access was less satisfactory to the extent that the lectures had to be extended from the actual time allocated; 5) educators' unstable internet access which disrupted the momentum of teaching; and 6) students did not attend the online courses. There were four (4) means to overcome these challenges 1) institutions to provide more comprehensive and e-learning platforms for online learning; 2) internet access for educators and students should be good to ensure smooth and uninterrupted online classes; 3) providing workshops or training programs on management of online classes for educators; and 4) for courses involving mathematical computation, in addition to a more suitable platform for teaching, the student population per group to be small in size to accommodate 10 educators while teaching. The results of this study shall benefit the management of private higher learning institutions and educators involved in online learning.

With the advancement of technology, online learning has changed the landscape of teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning. Students in institutions of higher learning are expected to be ready to do online learning. But are they? The purpose of this paper is to investigate online readiness among students in UiTM Sarawak. The 18-items Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS) was administered to a group 91 students from three different study programs. By using SPSS, students' online readiness was analysed with respect to their computer and internet self-efficacy, self-directed learning, learner control, motivation for learning and online communication self-efficacy. This study found that students' readiness were high in computer and internet self-efficacy, moderate for self-directed learning and motivation for learning, and low for learner control. It was also found that gender was not a significant factor that affect student online readiness. However 2 nd year students showed significant greater readiness in the area of computer and internet self-efficacy while 3 rd years students were significantly more ready in the area of leaner control. The study also found that poor internet connectivity was the biggest challenge faced by students. The implications of this study and direction for future studies were also discussed.

This research study examines the attitudes of Pakistani higher education students towards compulsory digital and distance learning university courses amid Coronavirus (COVID-19). Undergraduate and postgraduate were surveyed to find their perspectives about online education in Pakistan. The findings of the study highlighted that online learning cannot produce desired results in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan, where a vast majority of students are unable to access the internet due to technical as well as monetary issues. The lack of face-to-face interaction with the instructor, response time and absence of traditional classroom socialization were among some other issues highlighted by higher education students.
