Abstract and Figures

This paper presents a baby monitoring system for parents who are working and busy, they can ensure care and safety of their babies. Thus, we need to develop something unique that can help Parents to have watch on the Baby and can notify about the same. So, we have come up with an idea to design a Smart Baby monitoring System using IoT which will help the Parents to monitor their infant. The use of technologies which include Internet of Things (IoT) modules like Raspberry Pi, Sensing temperature and humidity, cry detecting mechanism, live video surveillance. We can detect baby's crying sound, temperature as well as live streaming of baby position in cradle. The live streaming of babies position and activities are displayed on web browser which are helps parents to have continuous baby monitoring in any place. The controlled swinging mechanism of the cradle (can be turned on when baby crying), fan on /off (turned on when temperature rise), controlled switching on the camera to capture live footage & controlled music system for playing the music whenever the baby cries.

BABY MONITORING SYSTEM

ABSTRACT
This paper presents a baby monitoring system for parents who are working and busy, they can ensure care and

I. INTRODUCTION
The People these days not seem to be always in urge with their work and they may not be able to monitor the
child all the time. In order to come over this difficulty, the baby monitoring system is developed that works on
the principle of IoT. The baby monitoring system is a kind of alarm system which can detect baby movements
and activities and can convey the message about the condition of babies to the concerned authority via internet
web browsing on mobile and laptop into any place. In proposed system baby monitoring has been designed and
developed using raspberry pi B+ as control unit. The different sensors like temperature sensor, sound sensor
and pi camera are used to assist baby monitoring and are interfaced with the raspberry pi B+. The baby sound
like crying is detected by sound sensor and then motor start swing the cradle. If temperature raises motor
starts fan on. A display is attached to the system to have the output along with temperature of the baby. Live
streaming is done by the pi camera. It detected and sent to parents. The result obtained from the designed work
shows the easier and convenient way of baby monitoring for busy parents. The proposed system provides an
easier and convenient way for busy parents in taking care of their babies.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
Savita P. Patil et al. [1] presented a baby monitoring system based on GSM network. The system monitor’s
health parameters like temperature, moisture, pulse rate and movement and send these measured parameters
to the parent’s mobile using GSM network.
Soukaina Bangui, Mohammed El Kihal and Yassine Salih-Alj.[2] which is microcontroller based project. The
authors have designed a low-cost baby monitoring system which detect sound baby crying sound and is
attached to a cradle which swings automatically once the system detects a sound and the cradle does not stop
until the baby stops crying. A camera is mounted on the top of the cradle to monitor the video output around
the baby.
Aslam Forhad Symon et al. [3] designed baby monitoring system to detect baby’s activities like motion and cry
sound. This system is accomplished with display unit, buzzer and camera module. Whenever baby motion or
cry is detected, camera module is turned on to display baby motion on display unit and buzzer to indicate
baby’s cry Detection. System proposed in [2] is designed using raspberry pi 3, camera, wet sensors, sound
sensor, PIR sensor, sound sensor, DC motor and SMS module. This system having different features like camera
monitoring, automatic swinging of cradle when baby cries, sensing the wetness condition of baby’s bed,

complete monitoring presence of baby in the cradle. Message about baby crying, wetness in bed and absence of
baby in the cradle are sent to parent’s mobile number to intimate them about their baby.
Sonal Cynthia Pereira[4] the paper titled as “Baby Monitoring using Sensor and Wireless Camera” proposed a
support system to parents who are busy in their career. The monitoring system designed which consists of
motion, temperature, moisture and cry detection sensors. The system uses GSM network to send alert messages
to the parents also when any of these parameters exceeds the threshold, the system is attached with a video
camera which operates based on the instructions givenby microcontroller and is used to capture the video
when the motion sensor detects the baby’s movement. The video will be displayed on the screen to monitor the
baby lively
III. METHODOLOGY
Temperature sensor DHT11 Module will be associated with this project to detect the baby temperature and
gives a signal to the Raspberry Pi. Then motor starts it working through motor driver and fan will be turn on.
The LM393 module i.e. sound sensor will be detect the baby crying and give signal to Raspberry pi then motor
will be start and swings the cradles and music will be on. A Pi camera will also be mounted on the system to get
the video output of the surroundings of the place where the baby will be present. The Raspberry Pi camera
module can be used to take high-definition video. The camera needs to connect to the raspberry pi through the
USB port. We use to continuously stream the live video to the website. The parents can see the live video of
their baby through web.

Once the noise sensor will detect sound, it will deliver a signal to the Raspberry Pi, then Raspberry Pi will allow
the motor to turn on and swing cradle and turn on music to calm the baby. DHT 11 sensor will be detecting
temperature, it deliver a signal to Raspberry pi, Raspberry Pi will allow to motor turn on fan and display the
temperature on LCD display. This sensor regularly detects the temperature. If temperature rise or decrease it
start its working. The other setup is a website that can be accessed using PC or smart phones by the parents.
The website is designed to access the video. The product uses camera for surveillance of the baby and sends a
real time video to a webpage using local host so that they can monitor their infants and alerts provided by the
system to present situation of the babies.

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ as shown in fig 2 is the latest product in the Raspberry Pi 3 range, boasting a 64-
bit quad core processor running at 1.4GHz, dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.2/BLE, faster
Ethernet.
2. Raspberry Pi Camera Module

The Raspberry Pi Camera Board as shown in fig 3 plugs directly into the CSI connector on the Raspberry Pi. It's
able to deliver a crystal clear 5MP resolution image or 1080p HD video recording at 30fps. The module attaches
to Raspberry Pi with 15 Pin Ribbon Cable, at the dedicated 15-pin MIPI Camera Serial Interface (CSI), which is
designed especially for interfacing of cameras.
3. Temperature Sensor

The Fig 4 show DHT11 Sensor which is commonly used in temperature and humidity sensor. The sensor’s
temperature measurement range is from 0°C to 50°C and humidity from 20% to 90% with an accuracy of ±1°C
and ±1%.This module is used to detect temperature. If temperature is high then motor 1 will be start fan on,
after some time temperature is normal then fan will be automatically off. The detected temperature level is
display on LCD display in degree Celsius.
4. Sound Sensor

The Fig 5 shows sound detection module. It is single channel single output sensor. This module is used to detect
the baby’s sound. The range of operating voltage is 3V and 4~5mA current. This sensor capable to determine
noise within decibel 3KHz to 64Hz frequency approximately whenever the human ear is sensitive.

When baby cries sensor detects the sound and gives output to the controller and it pass signal to motor 2 to
start cradle on i.e swing the cradle and play the music to calm the baby.
5. DC motor And Motor driver

Fig 6 shows Centre Shaft Economy Series DC Motor is high quality low cost DC geared motor and motor driver
L293 designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 1 A at voltages from 4.5 V to 36V.Here we have to
use two motor first one for fan, it sense the signal from temperature sensor and second motor for swing cradle
which signal sense by sound sensor. The two motor connected motor driver which can drive simultaneously.
6. Amplifier Circuit And I2C Module

Fig. 7 shows amplifier circuit and i2c board. Audio amplifier circuit board based the PAM8403 stereo amplifier
chip. It is a 3 watt Class-D stereo amplifier capable of operating on a voltage as low as 2.5 V and up to a
maximum of 5 V. It detect signal from sound sensor and pass to speaker for baby crying movement to play the
music. The i2c board is used to drive LCD display. LCD display show temperature of baby.

IV. RESULTS

Thus we have developed child monitoring system based on Raspberry pi and it helps parents in monitoring
their child. The experimental results show the system works successfully and results of the proposed system is
shown below.

This system is capable of sending a live video stream of the baby using the camera to a webpage using local
host, accessible through both mobile phones and laptop. The system also facilitate an important functionality of
listening to baby’s cry using sound sensor and then cradle will be start swing and music play using speaker as a
way calming the baby. Using temperature sensor it detect the temperature of baby and fan mechanism turn on.
The Raspberry Pi camera is set up in such a way that it can capture baby face and body correctly

V. CONSLUSION
In this way this proposed baby monitoring system that allow parent to observe their babies. The main
advantage of this system is that it is more user friendly and no harm to baby. As we have mentioned in the
introduction, our aim is to develop a monitoring system which will provide a high level of baby’s security.
That's why we have chosen video monitoring for baby’s protection since video monitoring is unique. In this
work, a baby monitoring system has been designed which is able to detect baby’s crying condition. This system
is designed using Raspberry Pi B+ module which is huge advantages over Microcontroller or Arduino. It can be
applicable for the home environment as well as in the hospital or baby nursing care.

This project presents a baby monitoring system for busy parents so that they can ensure the proper care and safety of their babies. This system can detect the baby’s motion and sound; especially crying and video output of baby’s present position can be displayed on a display monitor so that the mother or another responsible person can watch the baby while away from him or her. This baby monitoring system is capable of detecting motion and crying condition of the baby automatically. The Raspberry Pi B+ module is used to make the total control system of the hardware, condenser MIC is used to detect baby’s crying, PIR motion sensor is incorporated to detect baby’s movement and Pi camera is used to capture the baby’s motion. A display is used to have video output of sleeping baby. Finally, the developed hardware is tested to analysis the capability of detecting the motion and crying sound of baby as well as the video output. This proposed system can provide an easier and convenient way for busy parents in terms of taking care of their babies.
