Introduction
Recently, a single specimen of a scutellerid bug of the genus Odontotarsus Laporte, 1833 with an
unusual colour pattern was found and photographed on the Greek island of Crete. Based on a photograph
(Fig. 3), the species was identified as Odontotarsus parvulus Horváth, 1917 by Attilio Carapezza (pers.
comm.).
The species was described from Crete and later found in Southwest Bulgaria and on Crete
(GÖLLNER-SCHEIDING, 2006; Attilio Carapezza, pers. comm.). O. parvulus is one of five species of the
genus reported for Crete so far. The other four species are: Odontotarsus crassus Kiritshenko, 1966,
Odontotarsus purpureolineatus (Rossi, 1790), Odontotarsus robustus Jakovlev, 1884 and Odontotarsus
rufescens Fieber, 1861 (HECKMANN et al., 2015).
The record is published here to inform about the remarkable finding.

Recent finding
On 13-VII-2021, the specimen of O. parvulus was found in a rural area of Neo Kalamaki, located at
the southern coast of Crete (Fig. 1). It was found and photographed on Vitex agnus-castus L. (Lamiaceae)
(Fig. 2).
The specimen was removed from the plant to be able to take more and better photos and released
afterwards.
For several days, the site of the finding was searched for more specimens of O. parvulus. But neither
specimens coloured like the one reported here, nor others with normal colouration were found.

In order to be able to compare the specimen presented here, photos of specimens of O. parvulus with
normal colour patterns collected by Ernst Heiss in Elounda (Crete) in April 1983 are included (Fig. 4).
