Using case studies from Europe and the UK, this book highlights those men who are taking action to eradicate violence against women. Examining the factors that support men to take a public stance, the authors also demonstrate what we can learn from their experiences to help build the movement to end violence against women. This important study will inform grassroots movements working to involve and engage men and boys in building gender equality.

Gender Identity Awareness as a Shadow Pillar of the Gender Hierarchy: How It Can Undermine Women in...

Believing that differences between women and men should be recognized and valued—that is, endorsing gender identity awareness—is a common way of approaching gender diversity, including efforts to promote equity. However, such approaches can also reinforce stereotypes and justify existing inequalities, particularly when they reflect essentialist attributions for gender differences (Martin, 2023). ... [Show full abstract] To the extent that an identity awareness approach to managing gender diversity serves a system-justifying function, it should be associated with rejecting efforts focused on promoting women in the gender hierarchy, such as promoting women into leadership positions. Across five studies (one pre-registered; N = 1,421), we found that stronger beliefs in the fairness of the gender system predicted greater endorsement of gender identity awareness. Further, whether those who endorsed gender identity awareness supported or opposed gender-aware policies depended on the policy’s implications for the gender hierarchy: gender identity awareness predicted opposition to hierarchy-challenging policies and support for policies that reinforce traditional gender relations. These associations were driven in part by the endorsement of gender essentialism and rejection of opportunity attributions for gender differences. Finally, we provide preliminary experimental evidence suggesting that gender identity awareness functions as a motivated belief. This research offers insights into how gender identity awareness can undermine efforts to promote women in leadership.

Studies indicate a significant number of transgender individuals identifying as people of color, emphasizing the need for culturally competent care. Surgical techniques must account for both functional and aesthetic factors while balancing ethnicity and gender identity specific goals. Summary As interest in gender affirming care grows, the rhinoplasty surgeon should be equipped with an understanding of the distinct needs of the African American transgender. Comprehensive preoperative evaluations and customized surgical approaches can enhance outcomes, thereby facilitating alignment of physical appearance with gender identity. With an awareness of these factors, standard rhinoplasty techniques can be successfully employed in this population.

Background Sexual violence is a critical and preventable global threat to public health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender equality. Studies have shown that sexual violence among young people in Sweden is prevalent, with lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals facing greater exposure than their heterosexual peers do. However, population-based studies in Sweden on sexual violence across gender identities and sexual orientations among those aged 16 to 29 years remain limited. Aim This study aims to investigate the lifetime prevalence of forced penetration, physical assault during sex, online sexual abuse and nonconsensual sharing of sexual content and their associations with gender identities and sexual orientations among young people in Sweden. This study also aims to examine the categories of perpetrators of sexual violence reported by young people. Methods A population-based, cross-sectional survey using stratified random sampling (response rate = 23.7%) yielded a sample of 9,430 respondents. The survey data were complemented with national register data from Statistics Sweden. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses. Results Young women and nonbinary individuals reported higher levels of all four types of violence compared to young men, with the categories of perpetrators differing by type of violence. Compared to heterosexual men, bisexual and heterosexual women were more likely to experience the four types of sexual violence. Additionally, lesbian women, along with gay and bisexual men, faced higher odds of exposure to three types of violence compared to heterosexual men. Our results indicate that, compared to nearly all groups, bisexual women are particularly vulnerable, showing the highest prevalence of all forms of sexual violence. Conclusions In summary, our study reveals inequities in lifetime exposure to four types of sexual violence across gender identities and sexual orientations, revealing insights into the vulnerability of bisexual, lesbian, and heterosexual women, gay and bisexual men, as well as nonbinary individuals. To eliminate sexual violence in Sweden, measures involving stakeholders at all levels are needed, focusing on tailored prevention efforts and inclusive policies that address the vulnerabilities of these groups while promoting equity for all young people.

Gender Dysphoria and Detransitioning in Adults: An Analysis of Nine Patients from a Gender Identity...

The aim of this study was to analyze the pathways of detransitioning, which is a rare, but serious complication of gender-affirming treatments (GATs). The patient group consisted of all patients who were referred to the Helsinki University Hospital’s Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) wanting medical treatment for detransition from 2018 to 2019. The sample consisted of nine patients originally diagnosed with gender identity disorder (F64.0). Seven of them were assigned female at birth and two were assigned male at birth. All seven females at birth had “major” regret and both males at birth had “minor” regret. All patients except one male assigned at birth wanted their previous GAT to be reversed. The mean regret time (i.e., time from the first diagnosis of F64.0 to the beginning of the new evaluation period) was seven years. The detransitioners had a high number of psychiatric diagnoses. Childhood trauma, sexual abuse or rape, eating disorder symptoms, borderline personality, and psychotic symptoms were common among detransitioners. Retrospectively, the patients reported that the need for transitioning in the first place was not the transgender identity or gender dysphoria, but reasons related to the maturation process and unresolved psychological stressors. An assessment made by the psychologist at the GIC revealed childhood trauma and severe challenges in parenting and attachment. It is important to acknowledge, support, and evaluate those regretting treatments and/or detransition, and to learn from them.
