The rapid deployment of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and usage of renewable energy in day-to-day activities of energy consumers have contributed toward the development of a greener smart community. However, load balancing problems, security threats, privacy leakages, and lack of incentive mechanisms remain unresolved in energy systems. Many approaches have been used in the literature to solve the aforementioned challenges. However, these approaches are not sufficient to obtain satisfactory results because of the resource and time-intensiveness of the primitive cryptographic executions on the network devices. In most cases, energy trading systems manage transactions using a centralized approach. This approach increases the risk of a single point of failure and overall system cost. In this study, a blockchain based Local Energy Market (LEM) model considering Home Energy Management (HEM) system and demurrage mechanism is proposed to tackle the issue of a single point of failure in the energy trading system. It allows both the prosumers and consumers to optimize their energy consumption and minimize electricity costs. This model also allows end-users to shift their load to off-peak hours and to use cheap energy from the LEM. On the other hand, users’ privacy leakages are still not solved in blockchain and can limit its usage in many applications. This research also proposes a blockchain based distributed matching and privacy-preservation model that uses a reputation system for both residential homes and EVs to preserve users’ privacy and efficiently allocate energy. A starvation free energy allocation policy is presented in the model. In addition, a charging forecasting scheme for EVs is introduced that allows users to plan and manage their intermittent EVs’ charging. Partial homomorphic encryption based on a reputation system is used to hide the EVs users’ whereabouts. Identity Based Encryption (ID Based encryption) technique is incorporated in the model to preserve the users’ information privacy in the blockchain. Another bottleneck in the energy trading systems is to perform efficient and privacy-preserving transactions. Therefore, an efficient and secure energy trading model leveraging contract theory, consortium blockchain, and a reputation system is proposed. Firstly, a secure energy trading mechanism based on consortium blockchain is developed. Then, an efficient contract theory based incentive mechanism considering the information asymmetry scenario is introduced. Afterwards, a reputation system is integrated to improve x transaction confirmation latency and block creation. Next, a shortest route and distance algorithm is implemented in order to reduce the traveling distance and energy consumption by the EVs during energy trading. Cheating attacks launched by both buyers and sellers are also issues, which are still not resolved. Thus, a mutual-verifiable fairness mechanism during energy trading based on timed commitment is presented. Proof-of-Energy Reputation Generation (PoERG) and Proof-of Energy Reputation Consumption (PoERC) consensus mechanisms are proposed to solve the high computational cost and huge monetary investment issues created by Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) existing mechanisms. The mechanisms are developed based on reputation where energy trading transactions are audited, validated, and added into blocks of a blockchain. In order to protect the proposed model from impersonation attacks and minimize malicious validators, a two-stage peer-to-peer secure energy trading model based on blockchain is proposed. The proposed model has two layers: a mutual authentication process layer, and a secure and privacy-preserving energy trading layer. Afterwards, an incentive-punishment algorithm is introduced to motivate energy prosumers to contribute more energy in the proposed model. Next, a dynamic contract theory based supply-demand ratio pricing scheme is proposed. The purpose of the proposed pricing scheme is to solve the issues associated with the existing pricing scheme. Also, to preserve the privacy of the actual energy consumption behavior of the trading participants. Furthermore, storage overhead and delay in communication are challenges that need urgent attention, especially in resource constrained devices for sustainable and efficient transactions. Therefore, a consortium blockchain based vehicular system is proposed in this work for secure communication and optimized data storage in Internet of Vehicles (IoV) network. To secure the proposed system from active and passive attacks, an encryption technique and an authentication mechanism are proposed based on public key encryption scheme and hashing algorithm, i.e., Advanced Encryption Standard-256 and Rivest Shamir Adleman (AES-256+RSA), and Keccak-256. It also protects the model from double spending attack. Moreover, a cache memory technique is introduced to reduce service delay and high resource consumption. In the cache memory, the information of frequently used services is stored, which results in the reduction of service delivery delay. Simulation results show that all of the proposed models perform significantly better as compared to the existing schemes.

A blockchain-based smart farming technology provides the agricultural data to the farmers and other users associated with smart farming on a single integrated platform. Moreover, persistence and auditability of stored data in blocks into the blockchain provide the confidence of using the correct data when needed later and adds transparency, anonymity, and traceability at the same time. To fulfill such a goal, in this article, we design a new smart contract-based blockchain-envisioned authenticated key agreement mechanism in a smart farming environment. The device-to-device (D2D) authentication phase and device-to-gateway (D2G) authentication phase support mutual authentication and key agreement between two Internet-of-Things (IoT)-enabled devices and between an IoT device and the gateway node (GWN) in the network, respectively. The blocks are created by the edge servers on the authenticated data of IoT devices received from the GWNs and then sent to the cloud server (CS). The smart contract-based consensus mechanism allows verification and addition of the formed blocks by a peer-to-peer (P2P) CSs network. The security of the proposed scheme is done through formal and informal security analysis, and also using the formal security verification tool. A detailed comparative study reveals that the proposed scheme offers superior security and more functionality features as compared to existing competing authentication protocols. Finally, the blockchain-based simulation has been conducted to measure computational time for a varied number of mined blocks and also a varied number of transactions per block.

Vehicular networks are considered as one of the most pertinent research topics in intelligent transportation systems and anchors for future smart city environment due to the ability to provide road safety and precautionary measures for the drivers and passengers. Due to the characteristics of vehicular networks, security, privacy, and trust management are challenging issues. Blockchain is an emerging decentralized and distributed computing platform that facilitates recording and tracking resources without the need for the centralized trusted authority. Therefore, the potential for security improvements in vehicular networks is enormous. The paper aims to review, classify, and discuss a range of the proposed models in blockchain-based vehicular networks. We presented summary comparisons of the available models with their main features and objectives regarding security, privacy preservation, and trust management. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that provides a survey on blockchain-based solutions for security services’ improvements in vehicular networks.

Planning to adopt the Blockchain is very active in many industries, especially in supply chains. Researchers believe that the Radio-frequency identification (RFIDs), yesterday’s Blockchain, is now obsolete. The strongest reason that the Blockchain is the tool of this era is its unique features; real-time information sharing, cyber-security, transparency, reliability, traceability, and visibility, all of which boost the supply-chain performance. Despite the extensive literature on Blockchain, in recent years, no clear framework has defined whether a supply chain should implement Blockchain or not. This study attempts to fill this gap by proposing a framework for complex supply chain networks. In doing so, first, we identified the supply-chain practices of the oil industry in Pakistan, then we empirically analyzed the impact of these practices on operational performance. The results show that the supply chain management (SCM) practices positively impact operational performance. On the other hand, with the help of literature, we identified different Blockchain features and their influence on different supply chain practices. This study guides managers and decision-makers to evaluate their current supply-chain practices and understand the relationship between supply-chain practices and Blockchain features, and how different Blockchain features can help improving supply-chain practices and ultimately improving operational performance.

An essential goal of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is to allow vehicles' peer connections and contact a service provider through a secure communication channel. However, privacy and authentication are considered the main objectives of secure communication. In this paper, we propose an efficient Online/Offline signcryption of heterogeneous systems based on blockchain to secure data sharing between the IoV and internet servers. The blockchain prevents tampering with compatibility information. Further, the smart contract addresses the weakness of internet servers, such as passing incorrect data to the IoV nodes. The proposed protocol satisfies the security requirements of IoV, such as integrity, authentication, unforgeability, and confidentiality in a single logical step. We introduce the construction of our Efficient Heterogeneous Signcryption Scheme for Internet of Vehicles (EHSC-IoV) and verify that our protocol is secure under the Discrete Logarithm (DL) and the Computational Diffie-Hellman (CDH) assumptions. As compared with the existing five heterogeneous signcryption schemes, the performance evaluation and simulation results show that the computational cost of the IoV nodes in our protocol reduced by about 75%; 84:2%; 80%; 67:9%, and 82:4%, respectively, and the total energy consumption of the IoV nodes in our protocol reduced by about 69:4%; 75:4%; 75:2%; 62:3%; and 75:1%, respectively.

We present Helix , a blockchain-based consensus protocol for fair ordering of transactions among nodes in a distributed network. Helix advances in rounds, in each an elected primary node proposes a potential block (a successive set of transactions). For being included in the blockchain, a block must pass validation by an elected committee of nodes. Nodes have two primary preferences. First, to be elected as committee members. Additionally, because each transaction is associated with one of the network nodes, nodes would like to prioritize their own transactions over those of others. Our definition of fairness incorporates three key elements. First, the process of electing nodes to committees is random and unpredictable. Second, a correlated sampling scheme is used to guarantee random selection and ordering of pending transactions in blocks. Third, transactions are encrypted to hide their associations with nodes and prevent censorship. Through the corresponding threshold decryption process we obtain an unpredictable and non-manipulable randomness beacon, which serves both the election process and the correlated sampling scheme. We define a quantitative measure of fairness in the protocol, prove theoretically that fairness manipulation in Helix is significantly limited, and present experiments evaluating fairness in practice.

Blockchain technology has been advocated as a possible solution to enduring trust issues among trading partners in trade finance. We conducted in-depth interviews with industry experts to examine how blockchain technology influences the trust relationships among trading partners. Our results show that the technology enhances trust relationships by (1) improving the security of transactions and data exchanges, (2) facilitating the expression of benevolence, (3) enhancing the efficiency and the quality of communication, and (4) increasing the predictability of trading partners. The paper concludes with implications for both research and practice.

Blockchain is an emerging technology expected to unleash disruptive and transformational forces in many fields. As a decentralized distributed digital ledger, Blockchain technology has the potential to become an underlying operating system that governs the way our cities function in the future. This paper explores the potential of Blockchain as a technology for enabling sustainable future cities and empowering citizen co-creation and participation, promoting civic engagement and achieving Smart Cities' efficiency and transparency objectives. The article first provides background to the Blockchain concept, current and emerging trends in its development, followed by a survey of potential urban applications with particular attention to the domains of governance, transport, supply chain and logistics. Next, the paper presents the challenges that must be overcome to enable widespread adoption and deployment of the technology. The paper is intended for urban researchers and practitioners alike and will be a contribution that can be used by a broad range of stakeholders who wish to understand the disruptive forces of Blockchain, opportunities and potential applications, as well as challenges in the context of Smart Cities.

The purpose of the paper is to investigate the challenges and implications related to blockchain adoption in the private and public sectors, and from the entrepreneurs’ perspective. Based on 46 semi-structured interviews, a data-driven conceptual framework is proposed focussing on the environmental, organizational and technological challenges of blockchain adoption. The framework includes expected socio-economic value of blockchain adoption at the ecosystem level from a multi-stakeholder perspective: organizations and industries, end-users and society, public sector, and start-ups and entrepreneurs. The paper highlights the differences between permissioned and permissionless blockchains and identifies new constructs in blockchain technology adoption.

The benefits of information sharing along supply chains are well known for improving productivity and reducing costs. However, with the shift toward more dynamic and flexible supply chains, privacy concerns severely challenge the required information retrieval. A lack of trust between the different involved stakeholders inhibits advanced, multi-hop information flows, as valuable information for tracking and tracing products and parts is either unavailable or only retained locally. Our extensive literature review of previous approaches shows that these needs for cross-company information retrieval are widely acknowledged, but related work currently only addresses them insufficiently. To overcome these concerns, we present PrivAccIChain, a secure, privacy-preserving architecture for improving the multi-hop information retrieval with stakeholder accountability along supply chains. To address use case-specific needs, we particularly introduce an adaptable configuration of transparency and data privacy within our design. Hence, we enable the benefits of information sharing as well as multi-hop tracking and tracing even in supply chains that include mutually distrusting stakeholders. We evaluate the performance of PrivAccIChain and demonstrate its real-world feasibility based on the information of a purchasable automobile, the e.GO Life. We further conduct an in-depth security analysis and propose tunable mitigations against common attacks. As such, we attest PrivAccIChain’s practicability for information management even in complex supply chains with flexible and dynamic business relationships.
