IMPRESSION OF RARE RAGAS IN INDIAN FILM MUSIC

Abstract

Music is an integral part of Indian films and is associated in all phases on cinematic development. Commercial Indian films are melodramatic with different characters, exaggerated emotions, feelings and sentiments. Music plays a vital role in exposing a character’s emotions, feelings, actions even film’s tensions. Indian film music's dominant role in its popularity, its eclectic musical nature, growing international outreach of it imbibes various essence of ragas for creating a song which is expressive and dramatically a part of the film music. Classical Ragas have been playing a major role in Indian films in its ability to invoke emotions. Raga is the melodic amalgamation of musical notes and the character of a Raga is defined by Rasa, or it's kind of emotion. Rasa covers a very wide gamut of human emotions, and, Indian music assigns specific notes to them to interpret them. The feeling may be enjoyable or miserable, high or low, sublime or preposterous, real or imaginary, enraged or tranquil. Indian Film Music Composers have worked on different raga aesthetics and many ragas have been used in the quirkiest of ways in films, in attempts to be precise in its usage grammatically or musicologically within its framework. This article reflects the usage of rare classical ragas like Paavani, Nasikabhushani, Ramapriya, Srothaswini, Tilak Kamod and many more in Indian Film melodies(Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu & Kannada) by various Music Composers who have composed apt songs to suit the mood setting of the story and keeping the character in mind as per cinematic and filmic demands.
