As a child, I loved exhibits at the museum. As an adult conservation biologist, entering the back rooms of the museum to view the collections is even more remarkable. I have begun to realise the scope of what might be held in museum collections, and to consider what these specimens, artefacts, taonga (treasure) might tell us. Using examples from my work on insects, birds and kahukurii (dogskin ... [Show full abstract] cloaks), and analyses from morphometrics to isotopes, I will show how sampling from museum collections can add layers of richness and complexity to research, with the added dimensions of space, time, and connection to communities. Finally, I’ll discuss some of the ethics and understandings that guide my work with museum collections, and what it means to be part of collaborative partnerships of discovery with museum curators and communities.

“Loving, Knowing Ignorance”: A Problem for the Educational Mission of Museums

In this essay, I suggest that Mariana Ortega's concept of “loving, knowing ignorance” (2006) provides a useful conceptual tool for museum practitioners who seek to advance a progressive mission. This form of ignorance assumes authority in describing and acting on behalf of a subject, even as it fails to take seriously the subject's self-knowledge and agency. [Show full abstract] term to describe the stance of white feminists toward women of color, here I extend the concept to describe a wider range of knowers—in this case, the institutional museum. Using a case study at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to illustrate this problem, I will suggest that becoming aware of instances of loving, knowing ignorance and learning to avoid it is a key skill for museum professionals who hope for their institutions to fulfill their educational mission in a diverse and democratic society.

This is a descriptive study using qualitative methods. Its collection techniques are observation, interviews, and documentation. The method are data analysis, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that: a) Museum Brawijaya as a form of role in the values of nationality is to tell museum collections to visitors and participate or actively in exhibitions organized by relevant institutions, b) Management of the museum include ways attract the attention of visitors, human resources, funding, technical management of the collection and management of the library, c) Visitors response after visiting the museum is satisfied that a lot of national values that they can get that put the interests of the nation above personal interests, capable and willing to sacrifice for the nation and country, love homeland and nation, proud nation and state of Indonesia, uphold the unity of the nation and the state.
