Significance of the UPC Barcode in the Food Industry

Abstract

The food industry has many challenges. Amongst those challenges, the creation of Universal Product Code (UPC) barcode is typical one. Due to unawareness many small to medium sized food producers often think of barcoding products as an expensive burden and cumbersome. However, the familiarization of UPC barcodes provide better understanding about global standardization of products. It helps in managing the different sizes, volumes or flavours (or other variations) of products. The means of UPC barcode proves the best way of growing a business through access to major retailers, while establishing a better-known brand for retailers to track inventory, among other things. The UPC barcodes improve the supply chain in food retail, enhance visibility of product movement, helps in tracking and tracing fresh food consumed, facilitates to follow and manage shipping and become mean to enable better inventory management. The aim of this paper to create an awareness and to emphasize upon the significance of the UPC barcode in the Food industry.
