This study further quantifies the influence of biodegradable refrigeration oils on the performance of domestic refrigerator compressor using vapour compression refrigeration test setup. The process of tribological analysis brought to light the comparable anti-friction and excellent wear reduction behaviour with the blended refrigeration oil sample (BIO50—i.e., 50% by vol. of pentaerythritol ester of rapeseed oil and 50% by vol. of POE68). It was noticed that the BIO50 had considerable rise in coefficient of performance (COP) of about 41.7% and prime impact on the performance of refrigeration compressor. The outcome of the experimental study is supportive in finding vegetable oil-based refrigeration oil to substitute partially the synthetic grade for the domestic refrigerator compressor.

1 Introduction
At present, the refrigeration industry is functioning with the
aim to strike a balance between environmental protection
and energy economy. The domestic and industrial refrig-
erators have vapour compression refrigeration (VCR) sys-
tems where cooling is generated based on the evaporation
of refrigerants such as chlorofluorocarbon(CFC), hydro-
chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC).
The compressor is the key component of a refrigerator as
well as air conditioner which consumes more power. The
compressor of the domestic refrigeration system consumes
80–100% power of the total energy used [1, 2]. A curtail-
ment of the energy consumption by the compressor would
improve its energy efficiency to have substantial impact on
ecological safety and energy preservation. Wang etal. [3]
investigated the advantage of proposing energy profitable
refrigeration oil. They reported that the proposed refrigera-
tion oilis responsible for the minimization of energy con-
sumption over 15% and reduction in greenhouse gas emis-
sions. The crucial aspects influencing the performance and
consistency of refrigerator compressors are the refrigeration
oil properties, materials, manufacturing process and running
conditions [4, 5].
The refrigeration oil used in refrigerator compressor
serves several functions such as the cooling medium offering
thin lubricant film between moving components (liner/ring,
crank shaft/connecting rod &valves etc.,), reducing noise
and evacuating deposits/sediments. On the other hand, the
existence of oil in VCR system leads to foaming issue and
modifies the physical/thermodynamic/transport properties of
oil-refrigerant mixtures when it enters into condenser/evap-
orator. Traditionally used refrigeration oils are naphthenic
mineral oil, paraffinic mineral oil and heavy alkyl benzene.
Hence, it is of great importance to study the influence of
oil in refrigeration [68]. Mineral oil is not highly compat-
ible with HFC134a used in household refrigeration systems
and hence polyolester oil is used as refrigeration oil in the
household refrigerator. Polyolester oil (POE) with viscosities
ISO 15-220 is suitable forpiston and screw compressor of

The current research is focused on the application of nanoparticles in vapour compression refrigeration systems. The major aim of the study is to investigate the effects of nano-oil on various performance parameters of the vapour compression refrigeration systems such as refrigeration capacity, compressor power, compressor discharge temperature and last but not the least, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the refrigeration system. Nano-oil was prepared by dispersing Al2O3 nanoparticles in PAG oil. Al2O3 nanoparticles were chosen because of aluminium oxide's superior thermophysical properties and a low dielectric constant in comparison to other commonly used nanoparticles such as CuO and TiO2. The above-mentioned performance parameters were compared for broadly two different cases, viz., VCRS working on R134a/PAG mixture and VCRS working on R134a/PAG/Al2O3 (R134a/nano-oil) mixture. The system analysis was conducted at several evaporator temperatures ranging from -11 °C to 1 °C and at two different condenser temperatures, viz., 30 °C and 34 °C. The dispersion of nanoparticles into the compressor oil resulted in a higher degree of subcooling at the condenser exit. It was also found that the COP of the system increased by as much as 6.5 % due to the addition of nanoparticles in the system.

This article presents an experimental investigation of domestic refrigerator using R134a as working fluid with different concentration of Al2O3, TiO2 nano particles and nano composite particles dispersed in polyolester (POE) oil lubricant. All the nano particles were added to the POE oil with 0.1gL⁻¹ volume concentration. The experiments are conducted for different compositions such as R134a with POE oil, R134a with nano lubricant (Al2O3/POE oil and TiO2/POE oil) and R134a with nano composite lubricant (75% Al2O3/25% TiO2/POE oil, 50% Al2O3/50% TiO2/POE oil and 25% Al2O3/75% TiO2/POE oil). Both second law analysis and performance analysis was conducted. Analysis was based on temperature and pressure readings measured from various sensors and gauges which is attched to the system. The test conducted at −18 °C temperature in evaporator with reference to 27 °C environment state. Findings show that best performance is given by R134a with nano composite lubricant 50% Al2O3/50% TiO2/POE oil which results in lowest power consumption of 92.2 W, highest actual coefficient of performance of 2.33, lowest compressor work of 61.24 kJ/kg, lowest total irreversibility of the system of 36.19 kJ/kg and highest second law efficiency of the system of 40.9%. Thus, using this nano composite fluid mixture as lubricant in domestic refrigerator is suggested.

Among all sectors of refrigeration, one of the most affected by the latest international regulations is the domestic refrigeration. Although for it has been suggested some solutions, such as the construction of household refrigerator operating with the hydrocarbons, there remains the need to find a substitute for R-134a. With the aim of finding a simple implementation solution, in the present work, it is reported an experimental investigation carried out on a domestic no-frost refrigerator designed and built to operate with R-134a and for which a drop-in with R-152a has been realised. Different tests have been performed with the aim to identify the right charge of R-152a too. In line with the standard ISO 15502:2005 (2005), pull-down and 24 h energy consumption experiments have been run to evaluate the performance of R-152a as the drop-in replacement of R-134a in a domestic refrigerator. Also, a theoretical model has been proposed with the aim to give support to the observed energy change.

In this work, the experimental examination was carried out using a mixture of R134a and LPG refrigerant (consisting of R134a and LPG in a proportion of 28:72 by weight) as a replacement for R134a in a vapor compression refrigeration system. Exergy and energy tests were carried out at different evaporator and condenser temperatures with controlled environmental conditions. The results showed that the exergy destruction in the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and a capillary tube of the R134a / LPG refrigeration system was found lower by approximately 11.13–3.41%, 2.24–3.43%, 12.02–13.47% and 1.54–5.61% respectively. The compressor exhibits the highest level of destruction, accompanied by a condenser, an evaporator and a capillary tube in refrigeration systems. The refrigeration capacity, COP and power consumption of the compressor of the R134a /LPG refrigeration system were detected higher and lower compared to the R134a refrigeration system by about 7.04–11.41%, 15.1–17.82%, and 3.83–8.08% respectively. Also, the miscibility of R134a and LPG blend with mineral oil discovered good. The R134a and LPG refrigerant mixture proposed in this study perform superior to R134a from component-wise exergy and energy analyses under similar experimental conditions.

This study investigated the optimization of ultrasound-aided transesterification process variables for the synthesis of polyol ester-based biolubricant. A response surface methodology based on Box–Behnken design coupled with crow search algorithm methodology was adopted to optimize the ultrasonicated transesterification process variables such as an ultrasonic pulse, amplitude, catalyst concentration, and reaction temperature in order to maximize the yield percentage of polyol ester. The formation of pentaerythritol ester was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography. The significant properties of the new formulation were compared with synthetic grade compressor oil. Improved yield of 81.4% of pentaerythritol ester was accomplished with an ultrasonic pulse of 15 s, an ultrasonic amplitude of 60%, a catalyst concentration of 1.5 wt%, and the reaction temperature of 100 °C. This optimization study suggested that ultrasonicated successive transesterification process is an effective method in substituting conventional successive transesterification process for the synthesis of pentaerythritol ester-based biolubricant.

This paper experimentally investigates the performance of an ice plant test rig for varied volume concentrations (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%) of TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in polyol ester (POE) lubricating oil using R134a as a working refrigerant. The performance of the test rig is investigated on the basis of parameters including brine temperature in the brine tank (pull-down time), pressure ratio, compressor power input, freezing capacity, COP, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density at suction and discharge end of compressor. Analysis is based on temperature and pressure readings taken using suitable thermocouples and gauges fitted to the test rig. Refrigerant properties are acquired using REFPROP 9.1 software development by NIST. The concentration of 0.2% is found as the optimum since the lowest compressor power input and the highest COP are achieved at this concentration. The result indicates that the mixture of R134a/nanolubricant (POE/TiO2) worked safely and efficiently in the rig, and the performance is found better than operated with mixture of R134a/lubricant (POE), with 15.8% less power consumption in the compressor and 29.1% increase in the COP at 0.2% volume concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles. Moreover, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and density of the mixture of R134a/nanolubricant (POE/TiO2) are found higher compared to mixture of R134a/lubricant (POE) and are increasing with increasing the TiO2 concentration.

The interest in the use of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles as solid nanolubricant for R134a–polyolester oil-based vapour compression refrigeration system was arisen because of its self-lubricating property, thermal and chemical stability. The present investigation analyzes the consequence of different volume concentrations of h-BN solid nanolubricant in the polyolester oil-based lubricant, on its density, viscosity and tribological aspects, as well as on the coefficient of performance of a vapour compression refrigeration system using R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) refrigerant as the working fluid. Different samples of nanolubricants were prepared based on the volume percentage of h-BN nanoparticles using magnetic stir, low-intensity ultrasonic bath and high-intensity ultrasonic stirrer method. The tribological test results reveal that there is a momentous enhancement in antifriction behaviour in the nanolubricant compared to base polyolester oil. The nanolubricant containing 3 vol% h-BN nanoparticles shows a sixty percentage improvement in the energy saving as compared to base POE oil system.

The refrigerator is one of the most essential domestic appliances and causes considerable energy consumption every year. The efficiency of a normal household refrigerator is significantly affected by the heat-insulating property of the thermal barrier of the freezer due to its low inner temperature. In this study, a novel refrigerator with a loop thermosyphon is put forward to decrease the heat transfer between the freezer and ambient air. It has great potential to be popularized as a sustainable energy technology or applied in the renewable energy field considering its significant energy-saving effect, simple structure, and low cost. The energy-saving behavior of the refrigerator is preliminarily evaluated based on the theoretical calculation. The temperatures of ambient, the fresh food compartment, and the location of the heat transport component are varied; the impacts are analyzed. The total cold loss of the topside and side freezer walls is reduced from 16 W to 14 W in the normal test conditions, and the energy-saving ratio varies from 6.3% to 28.5% when the ambient temperature, the location of the heat transport component, and the fresh food compartment temperature vary. The results certificate the energy-saving capability of the novel refrigerator and its reliability in hot climate.

The present investigation is intended to adopt ultrasonication aided transesterification process for the formulation of pentaerythryl ester of rapeseed oil (PE) as biodegradable compressor oil. The formulated pentaerythryl ester was blended with synthetic grade compressor oil (SAE30) in the ratio of 25%, 50%, and 75% by volume. The tribological characterisation of compressor oil was carried out using four ball and high frequency reciprocating tribometer. The tribological investigations showed that pentaerythryl ester of rapeseed oil had better lubricity behaviour as compared to synthetic grade compressor oil. The lowest friction co-efficient, antiwear behaviour and better thermo-oxidative stability was observed with blended compressor oil sample i.e., 75% by vol. of PE+25% by vol. of SAE30. The outcome of the tribological investigation is helpful in finding vegetable oil-based compressor oil to replace petroleum-based compressor oil partially for industrial air compressor applications.

Biolubricants, though an answer to depleting mineral oil reserves and toxic pollutants seeping into the environment, have several drawbacks. They have a limited range of viscosities, poor low temperature properties, and reduced oxidative stability. Rubber seed oil, a nonedible oil extracted from rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg) seeds, has been observed to serve as a good base stock for developing a novel biolubricant. This study aims at improving the properties of rubber seed oil, namely, its free fatty acid content, viscosity, cloud and pour point, tribological properties, and oxidative stability using suitable natural and synthetic additives to make it as good as commercial lubricants available in the market. A final formulation containing esterified rubber seed oil with (1% low-density polyethylene + 1.5% polypropylene as viscosity enhancers, 1.5% agarose to improve coefficient of friction, 1.5% butylated hydroxyl toluene as pour point depressant and (1% butylated hydroxyl anisole + 1.5% α-tocopherol + 1% ascorbic acid) as antioxidants has been found to have superior lubricant properties when compared to plain rubber seed oil. The biodegradability of the final formulated oil has also been studied.
