FROM GHOSTS TO MICKEY MOUSE: SOCIAL ENCOUNTERS DURING OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCES -

Abstract

While out-of-body experience (OBE) research has largely focused on the phenomenologies of the self and the body, social content has not been adequately investigated. Using semi-structured interviews, this study explores the OBE figures of five UK-based participants. It aims to describe the features of these figures, the interactions with them, and how cosmologies are shaped within the affordances of OB spaces. The study revealed several features that set OBE figures apart from those of other experiences such as lucid dreams (LDs). For example, participants reported unresponsive figures, or figures reacting to them with fear during OBEs, but not during LDs. LD figures were described as mere “props’’ in an imaginary environment, while OBE figures were seen as having “more substance” or feeling more real. The impact of these encounters included belief in the existence of multiple dimensions and time travel, and the ability to communicate with the deceased during OBEs. Interestingly, both the phenomenological characteristics of OBEs and OBE figures seemed to change over time, both from experience to experience, and within the same OBE, often resulting in an increase in encounters. Further, figures seemed to ‘spill over’ between other states of consciousness such as waking or dreams, corresponding with Lohmann’s concept of “night residues’’. This paper argues that, just as OBEs can provide insights into our relationships with our selves, bodies and environments, they may also provide fruitful insights into our relationships with others, and cosmologies related to the ways in which we connect.
