Abstract

Whether a visit from the German Emperor or Fidel Castro, whether flowers for Walter Ulbricht or throwing eggs at Chancellor Kohl: the focus of this volume is on photographs that show important events related to regional as well as all-German history in the city of Halle on the Saale. In the book, which grew out of a series of lectures at the Stadtmuseum Halle, the authors first present and analyze a 'main photograph'. They then explain what content can be gleaned from this and other photographs, what goals were pursued with the photographs, what was presented under this premise and what was omitted. This not only reveals important historical caesuras, but also shows that photographs were used for propaganda purposes early on and that manipulation was possible in this context.
