The book has been published in two editions, Croatian and English. It is divided into two parts and an appendix which contains the latest research conducted on Proteus. The first part includes knowledge about the phenomenon of the Dinaric Karst and speleological, biospeleological and cave diving research, with the aim of introducing the reader to the mysterious underground world in which this species lives and highlight the principles of how the species is explored. The second part of the book provides an overview of almost all publications, more than 600 (scientific papers, abstracts, collections of papers, books, brochures, documentaries, newspaper articles, etc.) written by Croatian and foreign scientists. Thus, in this part you can find out all about biology, ecology, physiology, evolution and reproduction, as well as captive breeding of the species in laboratories. Particularly interesting part is the addition to the book, which describes the latest methodologies used in the research of this species. For example, a method of detecting Proteus from a sample of water containing parts of its DNA, as well as a new non-invasive method of marking individuals and modern health methods. In addition to these, many other methods can be found in the book that are crucial for the long-term protection of the species and its habitat.
