CLIMATE CHANGE: MELTING GLACIERS OF KYRGYZSTAN

Abstract

Glaciers are thick masses of ice that form at the polar regions and at very high elevation. In these regions, snow never melts and it accumulates year after year. As more and more snow builds up, it is compressed by its own weight, eventually turning it into glacial ice, which is extremely hard. The massive weight of the glaciers is also what pushes them forward, down the mountain. Along the way they pick up rocks and debris carving large "U" shaped valleys into the mountains, dramatically altering the landscape. They further change the landscape when they deposit the debris they are carrying.
