Abstract and Figures

The majority of data was collected in the period 2007-2018, while systematic collection of data started just in 2015 for preparation of this publication. Part of the data came from research camps of Scientific- research society of biology and ecology students “Josif Pančić” from Novi Sad. Reviewed were also sparse literature data on moths of researched area.In the research so far in the territory of Vlasina recorded were 412 species of moth, belonging to 33 different families. In the period 2007 to 2018, particularly since 2015 when study became systemized, gathered were some thousand five hundred records, 1347 of which were identified to species level. We highlight the species that due to research of PIO “Vlasina” enriched Serbian fauna for four new species: Epinotia ramella (Linnaeus, 1758), Monochroa cytisella (Curtis, 1837), Mirificarma maculatella (Hübner, 1796) and Pennithera ulicata (Rambur, 1934).

In the many years of research organized between 1977 and 2017, a total of 76 hoverfly species were collected in the protected Landscape of Outstanding Features “Vlasina” (southeastern Serbia) on six localities. Among the identified taxa there is a rare species, Cheilosia longula (Zetterstedt, 1838), which is protected in Serbia. Additionally, one potentially new hoverfly species is registered (Merodon aff. cinereus). The first species checklist of hoverflies for Vlasina is proposed.

European free-tailed bat, Tadarida teniotis (Rafinesque, 1814), representative of the family Molossidae, is mainly distributed in the Mediterranean area. It roosts in inaccessible cliffs and rock crevices, flies fast and high above the ground, and is capable of long forages. Considering that T. teniotis was recorded in the neighbouring countries and suitable habitats exist at least in some parts of Serbia, the presence of this species was to be expected. The survey of bat fauna in the protected area Landscape of the Outstanding Features „Vlasina“ was conducted in the period 2015-2017. In the evening on 18 October 2017, in Vlasina Stojkovićeva (42.691016o N, 22.373792o E, 1356 m a.s.l.) the presence of T. teniotis, the first time for Serbia, was definitely confirmed using acoustic identification method. With this finding, the number of bat species in Serbia rises to 31. Future research is necessary to determine whether this species roosts, breeds and/or hibernates in Serbia.

The collections of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade comprise 804 specimens representing 23 species of Zygaenidae, thirteen of which belong to the sub-family Zygaeninae and ten to the Procridinae. The examined material was collected in the territory of the former SFR of Yugoslavia, mostly in Serbia, between 1922 and 1996. Two species, viz. Zygaena (Mesembrynus) cynarae (Esper, 1789) and Zygaena (M.) punctum Ochsenheimer, 1808, are recorded for the first time for the fauna of Serbia. Zygaena (M.) punctum is also recorded for the first time for Montenegro.

New data on three species of Zygaena Fabricius, 1775 from Serbia and Montenegro are provided. Z. (M.) cynarae (Esper, 1789) is newly recorded for Montenegro and the central Balkans, while Z. (Z.) nevadensis Rambur, 1958 has been discovered in Serbia. On Kopaonik Mountain (Serbia), a 6-spotted population of Z. (Z.) transalpina (Esper, 1780) / Z. (Z.) angelicae Ochsenheimer, 1808 had been found which includes forms that are intermediate to the normally 5-spotted Z. (Z.) angelicae herzegowinensis Reiss, 1922 that is widely distributed in the Balkans.

Although the Vlasina plateau has proved to be an interesting area hosting diverse and unique flora and fauna, its butterflies have not been thoroughly studied. Consolidating several known records and our field observations, a total of 101 butterfly species were listed for this region. The area hosts a number of important species to be conserved under Natura 2000 and Emerald networks and a significant number of nationally important species. The most interesting record is Colias caucasica, a butterfly not yet recorded in the neighboring region, and its finding is described here in more detail.

New records of Chorthippus bornhalmi in the Balkans are presented. The grasshopper is reported from 7 localities from the protected landscape of Vlasina in SE Serbia, representing the first records for Serbia. The new records of the species are discussed and bioacoustical information and general distribution is presented.

The paper elaborates on the occurrences of thufur (earth hummocks, pounus) in a sub-alpine periglacial environment of the Vlasina Lake (1210 m a.s.l.) in south-eastern Serbia. Field examination encompassed 8 sites at the southern rim of the lake, at altitudes from 1220 m to 1274 m, where 240 thufur were measured for height (av=32 cm) and diameter (av=51 cm). Parameters of topography (relative heights, gradient, aspect) and overall morphology are analysed as well. The lake basin represents an area of cool air accumulation and temperature inversions. The upper limit of this zone, where 7 out of the 8 studied sites are situated, is the highest closed contour at 1243 m. Analysis of the relation between lithology, morphology and groundwater drainage showed that thufur on poorly drained sites are well developed, whereas the sites with good drainage are characterized by relatively small thufur. Detailed study of the height/diameter relation enabled differentiation between three morphological types of circular thufur: prolate spherical domes, hemispherical domes and oblate spherical domes.

This paper presents data on rare and new species of orthopteroid insects the fauna of Serbia. New records for Serbia include 7 species and 1 subspecies from the suborder Ensifera and 3 species from the suborder Caelifera, as well as 1 species from the order Mantodea. The total number of Orthoptera species in Serbia, including literature data and the results of our studies, is 178 (99 species of Ensifera and 79 species of Caelifera), while 3 species are known from the order Mantodea.

Research into the ichthyofauna of the Vlasina Lake reservoir in south Serbia, which is part of the Danube basin, was carried out in 1993, 40 years after its formation. The results of the research reveal the presence of several species of fish belonging to the Adriatic and Aegean basin, such as Alburnus albidus, Rutilus basak, Scardinius graecus and Pachychi-lon macedonicus. These findings are of great importance from the aspect of conservation, because the species Scardinius graecus and Alburnus albidus are on the European list of endangered fish species. In the latest study of the Vlasina Lake reservoir ichthyofauna (70 years after its formation), the above-mentioned species were not found. However, the pres-ence of naturalized populations of two species from the Adriatic basin were confirmed: Scardinius knezevici and Alburnus scoranza. These findings represent the first known areal expansion of these species, which are new to the ichthyofauna of Serbia, from the Adriatic into the Danube (Black Sea) basin.
